Specification of Letters Patent.
PENNSYLVANIA, A CORPORATION OF SANITARY NAPKIN.
Patented Aug. 1'7, ilfillii.
Application filed August 26, 1913. Serial No. 786,677.
have invented new and useful Improvements in Sanitary Napkins, of "which the following 1s a specification. a
This invention relates to improvements in .catamenial bandages and it consists of a catamenial bandage with a supporting band and a waterproof backing united together by said supporting band, by means of registering slots formed in the bandage and the waterproof backing, through which the supporting band is extended substantially as hereinafter more fully disclosed and defined by the appended claims. I I v Figure 1 is a perspective. view showing the underside of the catamenial bandage and the interlocking detachable connection of the supporting band therewith. Fig. 2 is a perspective view showing the absorbent element of the bandage unfolded to illustrate the three plies thereof and also the slots formed in the end portions of the absorbent element to receive the supporting band. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the waterproof backing. Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the supporting band. Fig. 5 is a detail transverse sectional view taken on line 5-5 of Fig. 1. Y 7
Referring to the accompanying drawings illustrating the practical embodiment of the invention 5 designates the absorbent element of the improved catamenial bandage, (3 the waterproof backing element, and 7 the supporting band.
The absorbent element 5 may be made of any suitable material and may be made up in any suitable manner, in the drawings a flat sheet is illustrated, which sheet is provided with two parallel longitudinal fold lines 5 and 5", whereby three plies 5, 5", and 5 are provided, which are adapted to lie in folded contacting relation, as shown 1 and 5. The opposite end portions ply of the absorbent'element are with transversely extending slots of each provided ,8, the slots in the differentplies being so arranged that they will register with one another when the sheet is folded. The waterproof backing 6 is also provided with trans? the slots 8 are brought into safety pins,
verse slots 8, located near the ends thereof and adapted to register with the slots 8 of the absorbent'element 5.
In assembling the bandage the absorbent sheet or element is folded upon itself so that registering positions, the waterproof backing 6 is laid on one side of the absorbent element, with the slots 8. thereof in register with the slots 8,
and the supporting band 7 is interlocked with the absorbent element and the waterproof backing by extending the end portions thereof through the slots 8 and 8, as clearly disclosed in Figs. 1 and 5. By the construction described it will be seen that no tension is placed on the absorbent element or upon the waterproof backing, as the supporting band is in no way positively connected to either element and said band receives all the pull and tension. This avoids gathering the bandage, or causing it to stretch, with consequent discomfort and imperfect action. When it is desired to adjust the position of the catamenial bandage it is not necessary to disconnect the supporting belt to which it is connected by the usual or by other like devices, as the absorbent element and the waterproof back can be moved on the supporting belt by simply sliding said elements thereon. This is a material advantage, as readjustment can be easily made whenever the necessity for it arises, without embarrassment. Another vital advantage secured is that there is no danger of the supporting band tearing away from the absorbent element, with the conse quent discomfort and embarrassment.
Having described my invention I desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. A catarnenial bandage comprising an absorbent element folded to provide a plurality of plies, each ply having end portions provided with slots, the slots of the plies and a supporting being adapted to register,
band disposed centrally and lengthwise against the bottom side of the absorbent element and extended through, the registering slots.
2. A catamenial bandage comprising an absorbent element folded to provide three plies and having registering slots in the ends of the plies, a Waterproof backing element band from the sanitary having slots to register with the slots of the In testimony whereof have hereunto set absorbent element, and a supporting band my hand in presence of two subscribing witdisposed midway of the side edges of the nesses.
