Specification of Letters Patent.

and efl'icicnt in operation, and by means of which a package of articles, such as letters, documents or the like, may be readily, quickly and securely fastened together.
Other and further objects will appear from the following specification and claim taken in connection with the accompanying drawing illustrating the invention and in. which:
l igure 1is a persppctive view of a package having a package tie constructed in accordance with the principles of this invention applied thereto. Fig. is an enlarged detail plap view of one portion of the tie member. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal sectional view on line Fig. t. Fig. fl is a ,top plan vicw ot' the tie member, with the "packagc encircling member detached thcrcl'roni. Fig. 5 is a sectional. view on linc :'i.'" Fig. 4.
Referring more particularly to the drawing and in the present exemplification of this invention, the numeral 10 designates gcncralb. a clip mcmber which may be con struclcd of suitable sheet material, such as nictal or the like. having an aperture 11 in one. end thereof and lateral otlsetwing portions 12. and which portions 12 are preferably provided with apertures or openings 13 thcrcthrongh for the sake of lightness. 'lhese apertures 13 also serve as a means whereby the arliclc may be hung up.
The body portion of the clipf iis provided with portions 14, .15 which are struck there from and deflected as shown to form portions about which the flexible. membrr 16, is adapted to be wound, and these up struck portions 14, 15 are so shaped that they will be somewhat springy. so that when the encircling member 16 is forced between the portions l4, l5 and the body of the clip, it
'will be trictionally held against displace-- ment. One extremity of'the flexible member 16 passes through the opening 11 and is provided with a knot 16, by means of which the flexible member is fastened to the clip.
The body of the clip is provided with one or more longitudinal grooves 18, 19, which may be of any desired length, and in the present form of the invention two of such grooves are shown. one arranged on each side of the upstruck portions or lipsli, 15. These grooves 18, 19, are adapted to re-' ceive a portion .of the flexible member 16, and when the member 16 is seated within the groove, the clip will be held against displacement. These grooves are formed in the body in such a manner as to produce spaced parallel ribs projecting from the face of the body opposite to the face through which the grooves open, and the ribs are forced tightly against the package by the flexible encircling member, and serve as. a means for holding the body against lateral slipping.
In use. the package tie, or rather the clip portion 10 thereof is placed upon the top of the package and if the package is held in the hand, the left hand for instance, the
-- thumb of the operator is placed upon one of the wing portions 12, to hold the clip in position. The flexible member. 16 is then passed around the package in any desired or suitable manner and then passed under the up-struck portions 1-l and 15 so that it will be forced between these portions Ll, 15 and the body portion of the clip. thereby holding the flexible member 16 frictionally against slipping.
and the two grooves 1'8 and 19, is for the purpose of permitting a right or.a left hand operator to use the device andat the same time hold it nroperly inposition, while the flexible menner is being wound about the package. a i
As shown in Fig. 1 the clip is first held by the left hand, while the right hand winds the flexible member about the package. this form a portion of the flexible member 16 will be seated in the groove 19. When the .clip is held by the right hand of an? holds the clip by means of one ofthe'wings ee- The object of the two wing portions 12 In lot and then detaches the flexible member with ."e spect to the clip, in any convenient manner.
While the preferred form of the invention and the shape thereof has been herein shown cling element connected with one end of the body, the opposite end of the body being enlarged laterally to form finger engaging p01; tions on each side of the body, a portion of the body being cut out and deflected to form opposed fastening clips, and another portion of the body being shaped to form spaced parallel-ribs projecting from one face of the body and grooves opening through the opposite face, said ribs and grooves arranged on the opposite sides of the clip to extend longitudinally of the body and said grooves being adapted to receive the said flexible member, said grooves also openin through the end of the body and exten ing from one end of the body to the clip which is adjacent the opposite end of the body, the said enlarged portions of the body being each provided with an aperture therethrough, and said apertures being of the same diameter. a
In Witness whereof, I hereunto subscribe my name to this specification in the pres ence of two witnesses.
FRED C. SPARKS.
