APrAnA'rusroR REMOVING STAPLES.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 16, 1915.
- Application filed November 4, 1911. Serial No. 658,486.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWARD KI BY Bor- 'ILE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Elmira, in the county of Chemun'g and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Appalams for Removing Staples, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertaiinsto make and use the same.
This invention relates to apparatus for removing staples, and with regard to the more specific features thereof, to apparatus for removing the binding staples of books.
It is one of the objects of this invention to provide a simple and practical method and apparatus for quickly and etiiciently removing the staples from the bound edgeof amok. M. I
Another object is to provide a self-con tained apparatus of the above nature that will be cheap to manufacture and rapid and convenient in use.
Other objects will be in part obvious and in part pointed out hereinafter.
In the accompanying drawings, wherein is described one of the various possible forms of my invention,Figures 1 and 2 are fragmentary perspective views showing the manner in which the apparatus is used; Fig. 8 is a plan view of the blank of the staple-removing tool; Fig. 4.- is a similar view of the finished article; Fig. 5 is a longitudinal sectional view of the article shown in Fig. 4:; Fig. 6 is a plan view of the complete apparatus; and Fig. 7 is a detail sectional view of the tool-holding device.
Similar reference characters refer to similar parts throughout the several views of the drawing.
Conducive to a clearer understanding of this invention, it may be remarked that in the manufacture of sales books and similar articles a single order often comprises sev eral thousand books. It sometimes happens that in filling such an order a defect in the manufacture of the pads occurs, in which case it is cheaper to remove the binding staples than to throw away the pads.
Referring to the drawings in detail, and particularly Fig. 6, 1 denotes a fiat table or lap board provided with a transverse groove or longitudinal recess 2. Parallel with this groove is a cleat 3 adjustable in a direction transverse to its length by means of bolts or thumb screws 4 passing through the cleat and slots 5 in the board 1. Positioned at right angles to the cleat 3 is a second cleat 6 similarly adjustable in a direction transverseto its length by means of bolts 7 pass: ing through slots 8. The cleats 3 and 6 are adapted to engage the end and side of a.
metal blank shown in Fig. 3, and comprises a wedge-shaped or tapering staple-engaging end 16 which curves inwardly from the sides, as shown in Fig. 1, and also from the top and bottom as shown in Fig. 5. Substantially opposite its widest portion, which is preferably about the width of the inside of the average staple, and extending from each side, are laterally projecting arms 17 having inwardly cut notches 18 so that when the arms are folded over, as shown in Fig. 4, they provide an overhanging hood, the under side of which is adapted to engage the top of the staple, as shown in Fig. 2.
The method of operation or manner of using this apparatus is substantially as follows: The board 1 is taken in the lap of the operator and the cleats 3 and 6 are set to engage the end and side of a book so that the staples may be positioned over the groove 2. The staple-removing tool is then re moved from the spring clip 12 and is inserted beneath the clamped over ends of the prongs of the staple on the reverse side of the book, as shown in Fig. 1, and pushed rearwardly at right angles to the plane of the staple, which causes the ends of the prongs of the staple, due to the curved tapering edges of the tool, to swing upwardly, as shown in the dotted lines. All of the this manner and then the book reversed so that these projecting ends extend into the groove 2. The same tool is then pressed down so as to take in under the top of the binding staples of one book are treated in staple and'moved rearward until the top of the staple catches in under the hood 17, as
clearly shown in Fig. 2. A further; rearward and upward movement will withdraw the staples. The hood, by engaging the top of the staple, positively prevents distortion and one side pulling out before the other, obvi" ating the necessity for the use of pliers or other means for completing theoperation. The tool is then replaced on its holding clip 7 While positioning the next book Itis thus seen that this invention pro-' vides a simple and practical means for quickly and efliciently removing the staples fro oks, a d c mpli h s, among t ers,

' reass ss It is hereby certified that in Letters Patent No. 1,160,568, granted November 16, 1915, upon the application of Edward Kirby Bottle, of Elmira, New York, for an improvement in Apparatus for Removing Staples, an error appears in the printed specification requiring correction as follows: Page 1, lines 1718, strike out the Words method and; and that the said Letters Patent should be read with this correction therein that the same may conform to the record of the case in the Patent Office.
Signed and sealed this 14th day of December, A. D., 1915.
