COMBINED HOISTING-JACK AND STAND.
Specification of Letters Patent. Patented NOV. 16, 1915.
Application filed March 28, 1914, Serial No. 827,918. Renewed April 20, 1915. Serial No. 22,719. a
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JAMES A. MGMASTERS, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Kittanning, in the county of Armstrong and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combined Hoisting-Jacks and Stands, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to a combined hoisting jack and stand, particularly adapted for barrels, and has for its object to provide a device of such class with means, in a manner as hereinafter set forth, to prevent the stand from collapsing or slipping when supporting a barrel.
Further objects of the invention are to provide a combined hoisting jack and stand which is simple in its construction and ar rangement, strong, durable, efficient and con venient in its use, readily set up and inexpensive, and collapsible for a convenience in handling or transportation. 7
With the foregoing and other objects in view, the invention consists of the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts as hereinafter more specifically de scribed and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein is shown an embodiment of the invention, but it is to be understood that changes, variations and modifications can be resorted to which come within the scope of the claims hereunto appended.
In the drawings, wherein like reference characters denote corresponding parts throughout the-several views :Figure 1 1s aperspective view of a combined hoisting jack and stand in accordance with this invention, the device being illustrated in inoperative position, Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the device and further showing in dotted lines two positions of the barrel prior to the same being hoisted, Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the device in an operative position and further illustrating in dotted lines the barrel supported, Fig. 4 is-a top plan view, broken away, illustrating the locking lever in operative position in full lines and in inoperative position in dotted lines and Fig. 5 is a side elevation broken away.
Referring to the drawing, by reference characters, 6 denotes a longitudinally extending lifting bar havin one end thereof provided with a hook 7 w ich is adapted to overlap the rim of a barrel 8, and further engage the head of the barrel. The other end of the bar 6 is beveled as at 9 and is adapted to rest upon the floor or support 10 when the jack and stand is in position to support thebarrel 8 above said floor or sup-- port.
The device further includes an X-shaped support ng member which consists of a body portion 11, normally positioned upon the top of thebar 6, intermediate the ends thereof and said body portion is provided with a vertically extending pair of apertured ears 12, which are positioned at the ends of an apertured lug 13, formed integral with the top of the bar 6. Projecting upwardly from the body portion 11 is a pair of diverging arms 1 and 15, which constitute a support for the barrel when the latter is jacked above the floor or support 10. Projecting downwardly from the body portion 11 are a pair of curved arms 16 and 17, which extend at the sides of the bar 6 and constitute a fulcrum for said bar when shifting the same from inoperative to operative position. The lower termini of the arms 16 and 17, have spurs 18, which engage in the floor or support 10 to prevent shifting of the supporting member.
The ears 12 are pivotally connected to the lug 13, by a transverselv extending headed bolt 19, which projects through the said ears 12 and lug 13 and is provided with a nut 20, whereby the bolt is maintained in position.
The intermediate portion of the bar 6 is flattened as at 21 and the said supporting member, when upright, rests upon said flattened portion, and pivotally connected to said flattened portion, rearwardly of the supporting member is a cam lever 22, which is capable of engaging the bodv portion 11 and constitutes a lock to prevent the said member shifting on its pivot.
The pivot for the cam lever 22 is indicated at 23, and the said lever 22 is provided with a handle 24. When the handle 24 extends parallel to the bar 6, the lever 22 engages the body portion 11 and prevents the supporting member from shifting.
When the cam is released, the supporting member may be swung on its pivot so as to bring the arms 16 and 17 practically in a line parallel with the bar 6 which reduces the jack to a form in which it may be readily handled and in compact form for shipping.
What I claim is 1. A combined jack and stand comprising a lifting bar having a hook at one end, and.
capable of engaging said member to, prevent the latter shifting on its pivot.
- 2. A combined standand jack comprising a lifting bar having one end provided with a hook, a supporting member pivotally connected to the top of said bar and further depending below the bar, and a cam lever pivotally connected to the top of the bar and engaging said supporting memberaintermethe top of said bar rearWardly of said member and diate its ends for looking it to prevent movement thereof on its pivot.
3. A combined jack and stand comprising an. inclined lifting bar provided with a hooked end, a supporting member having two legs, one end of said bar acting as the third leg, said member being pivotally connected to said bar intermediate the ends thereof, and means for locking said member to prevent same shifting on its pivot.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
