Description
UNITED STATES ASAHEL G. BATCHELDER, OF LOWELL, MASSACHUSETTS.
IMPROVEMENT IN BLIND-FASTENERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 116,257, dated June 27, 1871.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, AsAHEL G. BATCHELDER, of Lowell, in the county of Middlesex and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Improvement in VVindow-Shutter or Blind- Fasteners; and do hereby declare the same to be fully described in the following specification and represented in the accompanying drawing, of whichl Figure l is atop View, Fig. 2 a rear elevation, and Fig. 3 an end view of my improved fastener. Fig. 4 is a vertical section taken through the latch, its supporting bracket, and operative spring, to be hereinafter described. Fig. 5 exhibits a front elevation of a blind and windowframe with the improved fastener applied thereto, the same serving to show the arran gement of the lever, latch, and bracket of the fastener relativel y to the post and openin g of the frame, such arrangement rendering the latch very convenient of access and easy to be pnt in operation, as occasion may require.
Of such drawing, A denotes a bracket, to be screwed or fastened against the 'outer side of a window-frame, and arranged therewith so as to project a short distance within the sash-opening of such frame. The said bracket supports a pivot, a, upon whichis arranged, as shown, a toothed segment, B, provided with a lip, b, and a brace, c. The lip is erected on the segment at a right angle with it and with the brace, and both lip and brace are provided with holes d. to receive screws for fixing them to a blind or shutter. There is an auxiliary set, e, of teeth arranged with the mainteeth and thin plate of the segment in manner as shown, the purpose of these auxiliary teeth being to insure the passage of the latch (l into the spaces or recesses between the main teeth, and
thereby prevent the latch, when loose on its ful crum, from riding upon the segment, so as not to engage with the main teeth thereof. The said latch C, formed as shown, is pivoted to the bracket, or has its fulcrums e supported by two standards,ff, erected on the said bracket, all as shown, the latch being arranged between the standards. The smaller arm of the latch is cup-shaped or concave on its under side, to receive a helical spring, g, arranged within a socket, h, made in the bracket, as shown. On pressing the short arm of the loom-latch downward, thelon ger or latch-arm may be raised out of engagement with the toothed segment. The position of the lever-latch with respect to the bracket and the toothed segment brings the latch into a very convenient posit-ion s for being worked when the bracket is fastened to a window-frame.
I am aware that it is not new to affix to a blind a toothed segment to turn on the pivot-of the blind; and, furthermore, that it is not new to employ a gear to operatewith such segment and to be xed to a shaft to go through the windowframe. Consequently, I make no claim thereto. Vith the said improved blind-fastener it will be easy to secure a blind or shutter, either closed or entirely open, or partially open, as circumstances may require.
VVhatI claim as my invention is- The improved blind-fastener, consisting of the auxiliary series e of teeth, or the equivalent thereof, the lever-latch, its operative spring, the toothed segment, and the bracket, all being combined and to operate as set forth.
ASAHEL G. BATCHELDER.
