WITNESSES.- My jam? 6. 6-, BY M mwfl- W ATTORNEY m STATES; 'ATNT FFICE.
ADAM ALOYS REISING, OF NEWARK, NEW JERSEY, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO BRUNO REICHELT, OF NEWARK, NEW JERSEY.
S PROCKET-WHEEL FOR 'MOTION-PICT'URE PROJECTORS.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ADAM ALOYS REISING, a subject of the King of Bavaria, citizen of the Empire of Germany, and residing at Newark, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, United States of America, have
invented certain new and useful'Improvements in Sprocket-lVheels for Motion-Picture Projectors, of which the following is a specification.' I I r This invention relates to sprocket wheels for motion picture projectors.
One object of the invention is the provision ofa sprocket wheel for supporting the film of a picture projecting machine, the said sprocket wheel being sofconstructed' as to present no sharp, edges which would engage said film causing the latter to; wear or break. l 7
Another object of theinvention is the provision of a sprocket wheel which is so constructed that it will engage the film in spaced relation from the photographic film thereon, thus preventing the solution from being scraped from the film and preventing what is called rain in movingpicture productions.
A further object of this invention is the provision of a sprocket wheel which comprises a plurality .of removable sections which may be detachably connected for the purpose of replacing any of said sections if the same are worn or injured in any manner.
A still further object of the invention is the provision of a sprocket wheel which will be comparatively simple and inexpem sive to manufacture, reliable and eflicient in use and readily assembled or disconnected as desired.
l/Vith the above and other objects in view this invention relates to the novel features of constructions, formations, combinations and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter more fully described, claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which,
Figure 1 is a fragmentary view of a film designed to be used in connection with my improved sprocket wheel; Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view taken on the line 2-2 of Fig. 3. Fig. 3 is a side elevation of my improved sprocket wheel; Fig. 4 is a cletailed transverse sectional view taken on the Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. "7, 1915.
' Application filed June 23, 1914. Serial N 0. 846,866.
line 44 of Fig. 2, and Fig. 5 is a similar view taken on the line 5+5 of Fig. 2.
Referring to the accompanying drawing by similar characters of reference throughout the several views, the numeral 6 designates, generally, my improved sprocket wheel upon which the photographic film is shown at 7 producing the pictures which are to be projected by the machine not shown in the drawing and which are spaced apart as shown at 8. The film 7 is provided with a plurality of perforations 9 for a purpose to be later described. The pictures terminate in spaced relation to the edges of the film 7 as clearly illustrated in Fig. l of the drawing and designated by the numeral 10. My sprocket wheel 6 comprises a circular body portion 12 provided with a plurality of transverse openings .13 and radial ribs 14 formed with central sprocket teeth 15 which extend intermediate the opposite sides of the circular body portion 12 of thesaid sprocket wheel 6. The circular caps 16 engage the opposite sides. of the body portion 12 and are formed with openings 17 and 18 respectively, the latter being threaded as shown inyFig. 4 to receive the threaded ends of the fastening members 19, which retain the said caps against displacement, with relation to said body portion 12.
As clearly shown in the drawing and especially in Figs. 8 and 4: the outer peripheries of the caps 16 lie flush with the outer sides of the ribs 14 and flush with the inner ends of the sprocket teeth 15. Guide flanges 20 are formed upon the caps 15 and have their outer sides flush with the outer faces of said caps and their inner sides beveled as at 21, as clearly shown in the accompanying drawing. These flanges 20 are of a width substantially one-half the width of the before described caps 16. Obviously, when the film 7 is passed over the sprocket wheel 6, the teeth 15 engage the openings 9 in said film, while the ribs 14: engage the spaces between the pictures 11 without engaging the photographic solution. The opposite edges of the film designated at 10 retain the inner edges of the caps 16 as clearly shown in Fig. 1.
My improved sprocket wheel will engage the film without engaging the photographic solution thereon, and is of such construction as to prevent any undesired movement of the film relative to the sprocket.
It will be manifest that a sprocket for motion picture projecting machines is providedwhich fulfils all the necessary requirements of such a device, it being understood that various minor changes in the specific details and constructions can be resorted to within the scope of the appended claims without departing from or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.
Having thus fully described my invention what I claim as new and desire to protect by Letters Patent is 1. In a sprocket wheel, a body portion provided with spaced transverse ribs having teeth formed with and projecting from the ribs intermediate the ends of the latter, and caps detachably secured to the sides of said body portion. I
2. In a sprocket wheel, a body portion provided with spaced transverse ribs having teeth formed with and projecting from the ribs intermediate the ends of the latter, and caps detachably secured to the sides of said body portion and provided with annular flanges projecting beyond. the ribs and teeth.
3. In a sprocket wheel, a body portion provided with spaced transverse ribs extending from side to side of the body portion and intermediate their ends having teeth arranged midway between the sides of the body por tion, and caps engaging the sides of said body portion. g
4:. In a sprocket wheel, a body portion provided with spaced transverse ribs extending from side to side of the body portion and intermediate their ends having teeth arranged midway between the sides of the body portion, and caps engaging the sides of said body portion, said caps lying flush with the ends of said ribs.
5. In a sprocket wheel, a body portion having spaced transversely extending ribs formed on its periphery, the ribs having projections thereon extending therefrom intermediate the ends thereof to form sprocket teeth arranged midway between the sides of the annular body portion, caps secured to the, sides of the body portion and provided with annular flanges forming guides.
6. In av sprocket wheel, an annular body portion having spaced ribs formed on its periphery transversely thereof and havingprojections forming sprocket teeth, the body portion having transverse apertures, caps engaging the sides of the body portion, one of the caps having aplurality of screw threaded openings and the other cap having of the caps having a plurality of screw threaded openings and the other cap having a plurality of openings,'the openings in the caps and the body portion adapted to aline, and screw threaded elements passed through the alining apertures to secure the caps to the body portion, the caps lying flush with the ends of said ribs and at their peripheries forming guides.
8. In a'sprocket, a body portion, caps engaging the opposite sides thereof, said caps extending beyond the outer sides of said body portion, flanges formed upon said caps, said flanges being'spaced from the inner sides of said caps, ribs formed upon said body portion, said ribsvbeing flush with the outer sides ofsaid flanges, sprocket teeth formed upon said ribs in spaced relation to said caps and means for retaining the caps in engagement with the body portion of said sprocket.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
. ADAM' ALOYS REISING.
