IMPROVEMENT IN BOTTLE-STOPPERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 116,433, dated June 27, 1871.
. Vented a new and useful I mprovement in Bottle- Stoppers; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof,
reference being had to the accompanying drawing forming a part of the same, and in which- Figure l represents a vertical central section of one form of my improved bottle-stopper applied to the mouth and neck of a bottle. Figs. 2 and 3, similar views of modifications thereof.
Similar letters of reference in the several figures refer to like parts.
This invention has reference to an improved bottle-stopper; and it consists of the constituent parts thereof, combined and arranged substantially as hereinafter described and claimed.
To enable others to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe it.
A in Fig. 1 of the annexed drawin g refers to a tube having a longitudinal aperture, a, tapering fromits outer to its inner or lower eXtremit-y, and through Which tube are cut, dia gonall y, two openings or holes, a1 al, communicating with the said longitudinal apel-ture, and an annular chamber, a2, for-med by said tube, and the elastic cap or cylinder B embraciug the latter at its upper eX- tremity, as plainly exhibited in the figure above referred to. This tube is formed with an ornamental annular flange, a, which acts in the capacity of a stop or resting surface for the upper end of the thimble or cap C attached to the bottle when the said tube is depressed, in order to allow the liquid contained in the bottle to enter the annular chaanber a2, and from thence be admitted to the said tube through the openings a1 a1 of the latter, allowing the said liquid to be Withdrawn from the bottle upon its being tilted sufficiently to cause its contents to flow downward. B refers to an elastic cap or cylinder, Which is fastened at its upper extremity to the tube A by means of an annular shoulder upon said tube, Which is made by reducing the latter, and a cap, O', screwing on the lower end of the said tube, and having apertures or holes, which, when the said cap is fitted in place, are brought in a line with holes a1 of the tube. The lower horizontal extremity of the said cylinder or band is clamped between the upper end of. the bottle and the thimble or cap (J, which latter device is so constructed as to receive an annular shoulder formed upon the neck of the bottle, whereby it is retained thereon, and also to receive the tube A and embrace the same in such manner as to assist in holding it in place in the bottle. This rubber or elastic cylinder or cap acts as a spring, as, for instance, when the tube A, to which it is attached, as aforesaid described, has downward pressure applied to it, the said cap will, from its elasticity, yield and allow the tube to be depressed for the purpose hereinbefore described; and when pressure is relieved therefrom the said cap will cause it to ascend to its original position, whereby the flow of the liquid from the bottle to the said tube is cut ofl'. Fig. 2 of the annexed drawing represent-s the tube marked A in Fig. 1 as being supplied with an additional spring placed spirally around it, and the spring or rubber cap B inverted. Fig. 3 shows two rubber caps or springs, one of which bein g supplied with apertures and embracing the tube, as does also the other or upper one. The cap U of Fig. 1 is varously modified in the other figures, as Will be plainly seen by reference thereto.
Having thus described my in vention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A bottle-stopper, in which the tube A, cap U', rubber cap or spring B, and the cap C are combined and arranged to operate substant-ially as shown and described, and for the purpose set forth.
