DOOR-SECURER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. a, 1916.
nplication filed April 17, 1915. Serial No. 22,013.
To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that 1, WILLIAM D. KEN NEDY, a citizen of the UnitedStat-es, residing at Oakland, in the county of Alameda and State of California, have invented new and useful Improvements in Door-Securers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to door securers and particularly to that type adapted for ready application between the jamb and the adjacent edge of the door for temporarily locking the door eXtraneously of the usual door lock or latch.
The object of the invention is to provide a door securing device which is of the simplest practical construction and of few parts, readily assembled and disassembled, and all of which are very inexpensive.
Another object of the invention is to provide a device of this character which is applicable with security to divers door and jamb constructions.
The invention consists of the parts and the construction and combination of parts as hereinafter more fully described and claimed, having reference to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure l is aperspective of the device as applied and showing the door structure in section. Fig. 2 shows the device as applied to a different ja-Inb structure, in which the facing and door surfaces are flush. Fig. 3 shows the parts disassembled.
2 indicates a door and 3 the jamb with a keeper plate 4. in its face to receive a bolt of the door look, not shown.
My invention is a device with a hook 5, the shank 6 of which is insertible between the door edge anclthe jamb so that the hook' nib 5 will enter the aperture of the keeper 4; the hook being set before the door is closed. The shank 6 is provided with a plurality of slots 7 in parallel, staggered relation, and is of such length as to project well beyond the side of the jamb and door.
To secure the door closed there is provided an abutment plate 8 with'a cruciform aperture 9 the alined slots of which are designed to fit the shank 6. The plate is slipped on the shank and pressed against the adjacent surfaces of the casing and door, after'which a wedge or key 10 is placed against the plate 8 and passed in one of the slots 7, whose exposed length will nearest fit the intermediate depth of the key. The key has an indented edge to bite the surface of'the plate 8 against which itlies and when assembled, with the key wedged firmly in, the parts are all tight and will not rattle or shake loose. The wedge acts to draw the shank outwardly and thus pull the nib 5 up tight against the jamb. The purpose of the cruciform aperture 9is to permit the application of the plate 8 to divers structures of casing and door.
, In Fig. l the plate 8 is so disposed that a flange 8 on one edge thereof overhangs the offset casing and bears upon the inset door 2. When the surfaces of the door and the casing are in a common plane as in Fig. 2, then the plate is simply reversed so that it lies flat thereagainst, with the flange 8 outward. By providing a plurality of the keyreceiving slots 7 in staggered relation, the device can be looked upon doors and casings of greatly varying thickness, the key being inserted in the exposed end of that slot which best ,fits it. The overlapping portion ofthe plate prevents the opening of the door. 1
Having thus described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. A device for securing doors closed upon their jambs, comprising a hook engageable with a keeper in the jamb and having a shank with a plurality of apertures disposed parallel with relation to each other, said shank when in position projecting beyond the side of the door, an abutment plate reversible side for side and slidably adjustable on and being transverse to the plate, and a wedge key insertible through one of the apertures of the shank and reactive against the latter to pull its hook up tight on the jamb, and against the plate to force it toward the contiguous door and jamb structure, the plate overlapping the door and preventing its moving open.
2. A door securing device comprising a shank member having a plurality of elongated parallel slots formed therein disposed lengthwise of the shank, a hook member formed on theinner end of the shank insertiinsertible through one of the slots in the shank and reactive upon the abutment plate to force it toward the contiguous door structure, said wedge having one edge serrated to prevent slippage upon the plate.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
