Description
UNITED STATES EUGENE HOWARD, OF MILFORD, MASSACHUSETTS.
IMPROVEMENT IN CHILDRENS NURSERY-GATES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 116,960, dated July 11, 1871.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, EUGENE HOWARD, of Mit ford, in the county of Vorcester and State Vof Massachusetts, have invented an Adjustable Nursery-Gate, of which thefollowin g, when taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, is a full and exact specification.
My invention consists in an adjustable and portable gate, intended to prevent the passage of small children from one room to another, Src., and capable of iitting into door-ways, passageways, windows, stairways, Sac. The frame, which is so arranged as not to mar the jambs of the door, is contracted or expanded by means of a right-and-lefthand screw, there being double rails which slide with the frame.
In the accompanying drawing, Figure lis a View of my nurserygate placed in a door. Fi g. 2 is a sectional view ofthe frame of the gate, and theI center rail or shaft, in which are placed the rightand-left-hand screws, Sac. Fig. 3 is a view of a pair of the double rails above named.
c a are the jambs of the door in which the gate is placed. b is the sill or threshold ofthe same. c c is theframe of the gate. d cl cl d arevpieces of hard rubber set into the frame c, intended to hold the gate in place and to protect the jambs of the door from injury. e e e c are the double extension rails connecting the frame. j' f are slides, one of which is attached to the end of each rail and extends around the rail, which slides in it. gis the center rail or shaft, in which are placed the right-and-left-hand screws h h.
In practical operation all that is required to take the gate out of or to place it in the door is to give two or three turns to the shaft g and it is accomplished. V
The gate may be extended or contracted so as to fit any window, staircase, passage, Ste., and can be manufactured for a small sum.
Instead ot' using the two right-andle'ft-l1and screws shown in the drawing, either one may be used' at either end, in the center, or in any part of the center rail g, as may be deemed expedient.
Of course the hard rubber pieces d d may be made of different sizes and shapes in order to accommodate the surfaces against which they may be placed.
I do not propose to confine myseltl to hard rubber as the only substance from which to construct the pieces d d, but intend to use leather, cloth, or any other suitable material.
Having thus fully describedmy invention, what I clailn, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s-
1. rlhe right-and-left-hand screws h h, in combination with the frame c c, for the purpose of adjusting a nursery-gate, substantially as hereinbefore speciied.
2. The combination and arrangement of the double sliding rails c e, the center rail y, and the frame c c, substantially as and for the purposes hereinbefore set forth.
3. The combination and arrangement of the hard rubberpieces el d, or their equivalent, the frame c c, the rails e c, and the center rail g, the whole being combined, constructed, and arranged substantially as and for the purposes hereinbefore described.
EUGENE HOWARD.
