Be it known that we, James E. INGRAM, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of Baltimore, State of Maryland, ALBERT K. KELLER, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of Philato provide a bottle or jar closure comprising a member which is adapted not only to perform its proper function as a part of the closure for closing a bottle, jar or similar receptacle, but which also may be separated from the closure and used as a coupon disk or tag.

Another object of our invention is to provide a closure having a disk-like member which is adapted to have any desired data or legend printed or otherwise placed thereon and which is also adapted to be detached and separated from the closure and used or employed as a trade-coupon.

A further object of our invention is to provide a closure for bottles, jars or similar receptacles comprising an annular member which is adapted to be detachably secured to the mouths of bottles, jars or similar receptacles for closing the same, said annular member including an inwardly extending flange portion which overlies the top edge of the mouth of the bottle and said closure also comprising a disk of suitable relatively thin material the outer edges of which lie against the inside surface of the said inwardly extending flange and which disk closes the opening through the said member. The said disk provides a suitable space whereon may be printed such characters and 1e ends as may be desired.

A still further object of our invention is to provide a bottle or jar closure comprising a plurality of parts constructed and as-' sembled in such relation to each other that if in the act of removing said closures from such bottles or jars an inward pressure is exerted, inwardly upon the disk of relatively thin material, simultaneously with a forward pulling force upon the outer lower edge of the annular member, the said parts W1ll be partially separated from each other so that the said disk may be readily removed.

Other objects and advantages of our inventlon will be referred to in the detailed description thereof which follows or will beapparent from such description.

In order that our invention may be readlly understood and comprehended reference should be had to the accompanying drawing in which we have illustrated one? form of a convenient embodiment of our invention but it will be understood that changes in the details of construction w thin the scope of. the claims may be made without departing from our invention.

In the drawings :Figure 1 is a top plan view of a closure comprising a coupon disk embodying our invention; Fig. 2 is a transverse section of the same in closed position upon a bottle, said figure also disclosing means in position for removing the closure from the bottle; and Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view through the several parts or elements employed in the construction of our invention, said parts being separated and in position to be readily assembled.

Referring to the drawings, 1 designates, as a whole, an annular member having a depending crimped skirt 2 and having a transversely and inwardly extending flangelike portion 3 which is adapted to overlie the upper edge of the mouth of a bottle, jar or similar receptacle when in'closed position thereon. The opening 4 through the annular member 1 is closed by means of a disk 5 of suitable material, such as thin sheet metal or other thin sheet material. It will be observed from examination of Figs. 2 and 3 that the diameter of themember 5 is substantially greater than the diameter of the opening 4 but that such diameter is less than the internal diameter of the skirt 2 so that the disk 5 may be placed in position within the annular member 1 against the flange-like portion 3.

such as cork, which fits closely within the other similar receptacle in known manner to seal the same. The disk 6 is adapted to be detachably secured to the disk 5 in any suitable manner. The means employed by us for that purpose consists of a disk 7 of thin sheet material, such as paper, thoroughly impregnated with fusible adhesive substance.

in assembling the parts of the closure the disks 5, 7 and 6 may be placed within the annular member 1 and subjected to heat and pressure, the members 5 andfi being thereby detachably secured together by means of the adhesive action of the fusible adhesive material with which the intermediate thin disk 7 is impregnated.

It is apparent that the disk 5 not only performs its purpose and function as a part or element of the closing means to close the bottle, jar or other similar receptacle, but that said disk is adapted to be removed from the closure structure and employed or used as a premium coupon or tag, serving its purpose or function in that respect in a manner similar to the premium coupons or trading stamps such as are now given out by many mercantile concerns. It will also be apparent that by reason of the relative arrangement of the disk 5 and the coacting disks 6 and '7 said disks may be partially, if not wholly, removed in the act of removing the cap from the bottle, jar or other receptacle towhich it may be connected or attached. This may be done by employing a cap remover of a construction including a fulcrum point which rests upon the top of the removable disk 5 while another portion thereof is in engagement with the lower edge of the skirt 2, the removal of the cap being efiectedby exerting an upward or outward pull upon the skirt and simultaneously exerting a downward pressure upon the disk 5 by means of thefulcrum-of the cap remover.

One form of cap remover which may be employed is illustrated in Fig. 2 of the drawings. Said remover comprises a hook portion 10 which is adapted to catch at any point under the lower edge of the skirt 2. The fulcrum 11 of the said remover is adapted to contact with the disk 5 of the cap. it will be. seen that downward pres sure exerted upon the handle or body portion 12 of the remover would be transmitted through the fulcrum 11 to the disk 5 and also to the disks 7 and 6 and that simultaneously an upward or outward pull would be exerted by the hook 10 upon a part of the lower edge of the skirt 2 with the result that the annular member 1 would be tilted away from and off of the mouth of the bottle, jar or other Similar receptacle in known manner. It is apparent, therefore, that in the act of removing the cap from the closed receptacle the disk 5 together with the disks 7 and 6 underneath the same would be partially at least forced out of the surrounding the annular member 1 the disk 5 may be readily separated and disconnected from the disk 6 and'iit' desired also from the disk 7 although whether it should be separated and disconnected from the latter would make little, if any, difference.

Instead of the disk 5 being embodied within the construction in the manner illustrated it may be connected detachably with the cap structure in anyother manner which may be found to be practicable and desirable. I

"We claim 1. lln a combined receptacle closure and coupon disk. the combination of an integral annular member including an integral fluted skirt whereby it is adapted to be attached to the mouth of such receptacle and also ineluding an inwardly extending integral flange portion which terminates above and in alinement with the edge of the mouth of the said receptacle, a disk situated within the said annular member and having its edges seated against the underside-of the inwardly extending flange portion, and a sealing disk situated within the said skirt below the said first-named disk and being adapted to contact with the edge of the mouth of said receptacle for closing the same, substantially as described.

2. In a combined bottle closure and conpon disk, the combination of an integral annular member including an annular skirt whereby said annular member is adapted to be attached to the mouth of such bottle and also including an inwardly extending integral flange portion which terminates directly above the edge of the mouth of said bottle, a metallic disk situated within the said annular member and having its edge seated against the said inwardly extending flange, a sealing disk of suitable material situated within the said skirt below the firstnamed disk and being adapted to contact with the edge of the mouth of said bottle and adhesive means for securing the said disks together substantially as described.
