WILLIAM A. PHELAN, 0F NEWARK, NEW JERSEY, ASSIGNOB. T0 AMERICAN CAN COMPANY, OF NEW YORK, N. Y., A CORPORATION OF NEW JERSEY.
DISPENSING-CAN.
Application filed August 5, 1911.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM A. PHELAN, a citizen of the United States, residing in Newark, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Dispensing Gans, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a dispensing can or vessel adapted to be carried in the hand and the invention consists in the provision of a lidded pouring nozzle and a carrying bail, the bail and the lid of the nozzle being so connected together that when the can is carried upright by the bail, the nozzle is automatically closed, and when the can is tilted for pouring, the nozzle is automatically opened by reason of its connection with the bail.
In the accompanying drawing which forms a part of this specification, Figure 1 is a perspective view of the improved dispensing can, showing the bail in the posi tion it occupies when the can is being carried, and showing the pouring nozzle closed. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the dispensing can showing the bail tilted and the pouring nozzle open. Fig. 3 is a sectional view of the upper part of the can, the bail and the pouring nozzle, the section being taken from front to rear of the can. Fig. 4 is a similar transverse section.
In said drawing, A. represents the body of the can having a breast B, G a bail hinged to the breast at opposite sides of the pouring nozzle D, E the hand hold to facilitate the pouring and F the lid or closure of the pouring nozzle. The lid F is hinged at f so that the pouring nozzle may be closed or opened by lowering or lifting said lid. Extending from near the free end of the lid to the bail'is the connection G pivotally attached to both the lid and the bail, and of such length that when the bail is practically upright, the lid will be closed, as indicated in Fig. l and Fig. 3, and when the can is tilted as for pouring, and the bail swung back, this action will lift the lid and open the nozzle, as indicated in Fig. 2, and suggested in dotted lines 1n Fig. 3. The
Specification of Letters Patent.

pouring nozzle D is centrally located on the breast of the can and is of the pouring type, that is to say, its front edge is higher than its rear edge, constituting a pitcher-like spout which is completely closed by the similarly inclined hinged cover.
The action of the opening and closing devices of the can is entirely automatic, it belng quite impossible to carry the can by the bail without causing the nozzle to be closed and equally impossible to tilt the can for pouring when suspended by the bail without causing the pouring nozzle to be opened. This is a valuable feature in many kinds of dispensing vessels where it is desirable that the vessel should be closed at all times except when pouring therefrom. The action is not only automatic, but entirely certain and effective in action, and embodies, moreover, a construction that is cheap and easy to manufacture.
Having thus described my invention, I claim In a dispensing can, in combination: a can body having a conical breast, and an upwardly extending spout having an inclined lip and pouring opening; a fixed cover over the rear part of said spout; an opening and closing cover over the front and higher part of the spout and hinged to the front edge of said fixed cover; a handle bail hinged to said conical breast and having its legs near to the sides of said spout; and a link connection in the form of a bail having the extremities of its legs pivotally connected with the two legs of the handle bail below the top of the latter, extending thence horizontally to the hinged cover and having its middle portion pivotally connected with the hinged cover; the said parts being arranged to hold the hinged cover closed when the handle bail is vertical, and to open said cover upon any tipping of the can.
