UNITED STATES PATENT oEEIoE.
MAX HURvITz, or YORK, N. Y.,.ASsIGNoR, RY DIRECT AND MESNE ASSIGNMENTS,
` 'To EXCELSIOR BRUSH co. INC., A coRroRATIoN or NEW YORK.
`EoUNTAIN-BRUSH.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application led July 30, 1915. Serial No. 42,701.
To all/whom t may concern.' Be it known that I, MAX HURvITz, a resident of the borough of the Bronx, in the county of the Bronx andState of New York,
`have invented certain new and useful lmprovements in Fountain-Brushes, of which l the following is a specification.
vention being to provide such a device which will be especially adapted for cleaning between the spokes and working parts of such vehicles, and with which a continuous stream of water may be fed either to one or both asides of the brush during the cleaning operation and the amount of water may be regulated as desired.
A further, object is to provide in such a device a detachable brushing portion, so
that the same may be renewed when desired, and a still further object is to provide in a brush of thisrcharacter a simple, durable and inexpensive construction.
With Vthese and other obyects 1n view, my
invention is shown rin the accompanying 4 drawings, and will be hereinafter more fully described 4with reference thereto and finally pointed out in the claim. ,Y Y
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved foun-v Vtain brush; Fig. 2 is an enlarged plan view thereof and showing the same in position for removal of the brush;'Fig. 3 is a sectional lview taken on'the line 3 3 of 2; Fig. '4 is a Sectional view taken on the line 4--4 of Fig. 2; and Fig. 5 is a sectional view of a modi ed form of construction.
Similar reference characters indicate corresponding views` throughout the several views. i'
Referring to the drawings, and moreparticularly tQ Fig. 1 thereof, a cylindrical handle portion 10 is provided at its rear end with a hose attaching piece 11, to which a hose^112 is secured, and Ythrough which water is supplied to the handle. The forward end thereof has a plate 13Secured therein, in which are provided diametrically opposite openings 14 and V15. Longitudinal recesses 16 rand 17 are provided at the forward end of the handle portion, the recess at one side being slightly below one of the'said openings, and kat the other side slightly above the other opening. f The said recesses termlnate in openings or cut-out portions 18 and 19. The twisted wire ends 20 and 21 of 'the U-shaped brush 22 are disposed within the said recesses, the ends thereof being bent over into the said cut-out portions 18 and 19. For rigidlyretaining the same therein, a Sleeve 2 3 is provided on the handle,^which is moved over'the said recessed end of the same, and is held in place by means of ai screw 24 therein, which engages a hole 25 provided in the handle, the bent-over portion of the brush ends, which engage the cutout portions 18 and 19, preventing the brush from being pulled out of the'handle.' A lvalve 26 is rotatably secured to the plate 13 by means ofA a screw 27, a. small coil spring 27a being provided beneath the head ofthe screw for maintaining the plate in position, and is provided in one end with an opening 28 adapted to register with the opening 14. When it is 4desired to .have water-How through both the openings 14 vand 15, the ends ofthe valve are disposed within the .intermediate portions between the said openings and the recesses 16 and 17 while when only one of the openings is to be used, the opening 28 of the valve is brought into register` with the opening 14, "the opening 15 then being closed by the other end of the valve. 'In any of the intermediate positions of movement, vthe ow of water is regulated to a greater or less extent as desired. The wire portions of the brush between the handle and the bristles are preferably covered lwith rubben tubing 29 to protect the carriage or automobile during the cleaning operation. Vthen it is desired to remove vthe brush portion, the screw 24 is removed, whereupony the sleeve may be moved out of engagement -with the wire ends of the brush and the recesses 18 and 19, and the brush portion disengaged therefrom.
Patented reuze, 1916.
In Fig. 5, I have shown a. slightly Inodi- It will be seen that With the use lof my improved construction, a very eicient fountain brush is produced, which is especially adapted for the cleaning of automobiles, carriages and the like, and the shape thereof enables a thorough manipulation of the brush Within the spokes uof the wheels and the other working parts of such vehicles.
I have illustrated and described preferred and satisfactory forms of my invention, butV .it isobvious that changes may be made therein Within the spirit and scope thereof, as defined in the appended claim.
I claim A brush of the character described comprising a hollow handle adaptedl for connection with a Water supply pipe and provided at its forward end with outlet openings, with longitudinalv recesses extending back- Ward from said forward end along oppo- 20 site sides and with lateral holes at the rear ends of said longitudinal recesses, ay detachable brush head providedl with wire Shanks fitting said longitudinal recesses and having inturned ends engaging said lateral holes, and a sliding sleeve movable on said handle and adapted to slide outwardover said wire Shanks in said recesses to lock said brush head to said yhandle and inward over said handle to release said brush head.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention, I have signed my name in presence of two'subscribing witnesses.
