Description

ANDRE a. MICHAEL, or luonnrsrown, TENNESSEE.
. PACKAGE-TIE.
Specification bf Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. 255, i916.
Application filed September 29, 1914-. Serial No. 864,124,.
To all whom it may concern Beit known that I, ANDREW R. MICHAEL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Morristown, in the county of Hamblen and State of Tennessee, have invented new and useful Improvements in Package-Ties, of Which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to improvements in package ties, one of the objects of the invention being to provide a tie which may be arranged upon a package having a label or address thereon, so that the indicia thereof will be exposed to view while the package is effectively secured for transportation or for other purposes.
A further object of the invention is to provide a device of this character which will not injure the package upon which it is arranged. and also which is designed to engage packages of various sizes, and wherein the securing means may be repeatedly used.
With the above and other obiects in view, the improvement resides in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts set forth in the following specification and falling within the scope of the appended claim.
In the drawing: Figure l is a perspective view of a bundle of envelops secured in accordance with the present invention. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the device detached from the bundle, and Fig. 3 is a detail sectional view illustrating the construction of one of the U-shaped members or ears.
While in the drawing. the device is illustrated as applied to a bundle of envelops, the outer one of which having thereon a certain indicia, as for instance, the name and address to which the package is to be forwarded, it is to be understood that the device may be employed for securing a bundle of any sort, and in the said drawings, the numeral 1 designates the bundle. Arranged upon what may be'termed the outer face of the bundle is a fiat substantially rectangular preferably metallic frame the same being of a less dimension than that of the bundle 1. Extending laterally from the central portions of the flat longitudinal arms of the frame 2 are flat substantially U-shaped members or cars 3, the ends of which being upturned, as at 4, and extending longitudinally and centrally from the transverse connecting members 5 of the frame 2 are flat, providing substantially U-shaped ears 6. and the outer or connecting member of each of said cars is flanged or bent upon itself to strengthen the said end and as indicated by the numeral 7. The bent portions 7 of the ears 3 and 6 are arranged outwardly of the frame when the said frame is positioned upon a bundle so that the said portion 7 will not inflict injury to the bundle or package. and the ears 4 and 6 are preferably integrally formed with the frame 2, so that the same will lie flat upon the bundle or package. Arranged upon one of the connecting members or upon the outer end member of one of the ears 3 and one of the ears 6 is same being provided at its end with a buckle 8, while connected with the remaining ears 3 and 6, is a long strap 9, the same having openings to be engaged by the tongue of the buckle 8. i
As illustrated in Fig. 1 the longitudinally disposed buckle is engaged by the longitudinally disposed strap and likewise the transversely arranged buckle is engaged by the transverse strap. l'he free ends of these straps are brought over the outer face of the package and inserted between the frame and the package, so it will be noted that the straps are of a sufficient length to engage with any ordinary sized buckle. It is to be understood, of course. that various sizes of frames 2 may be employed, and likewise the connecting members and straps may vary in length, and while I have illustrated the improvement as provided with straps and buckle members for engaging the straps, it is to be understood that other means may be connected with the ears 3 and 6. as for instance. an ordinary cord or an elastic band, and from the above description. taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, the simplicity of the device. as well as the advantages thereof will, it is thought,'be perfectly apparent to those skilled in the art to which such invention appertains without further detailed description.
Having thus described the invention, what I claim as new is A package tie stamped to include a flat substantially rectangular frame having its sides and ends integrally formed with cena short strap 7, the
trally arranged flat substantiallv rectangu- In testimony whereof I aflix my signature lar extensions each provided with a- 1lolngiin presence of two Witnesses. tudinal s 0t and each having its enc ent I 4 upon itself to provide a reinforcing lip. and ANDREW MICHAEL a flexible element in the slot of each of the \Vitnesses:
central extensions and connected to the end R. L. WILLIAMS, of the said extension. ROB'RLINN.
