GUSTAV GoLnMAN,' or frnILADELrnI PENNSYLVANIA, AssIs 'oR To nEINrEr.
MANUFACTURING 00., mo, OF'PHILAIDELPHIA, rENNsYLyANI A CQRPORA- 'TION or P NNSY VANIA.
To (iZZ whom it may concern:
- Be it known that I, GUSTAV GOLD3IAN,' L citizen of the United States, and a resident of Germantown, Philadelphia, Pennsylva-v nia, have invented a new and useful lmproyement in Garment-Pads, which invention is fully set forth in the following specification.
This invention relates to garment pads, and has for its object to provide an article of the class described. which may be cheaply manufactured, shall be elastic in character, and present a smooth and firm exterior finish.
WVith these objects in view, the invention, generally stated, consists in a garment pad of suitable shape or configuration, comprising an inner layer of hair cloth or other suitable loosely woven fabric, in'closed between two layers of non-felted fibers, such as non-felted wcol, one of which layers is above and the other beneath the hair cloth, the non-felting fibers in turn being inclosed between two layers of felted or felting fibers, such as a good quality of felting wool. the outer layers of wool being united by fibers,
preferably of felting wool. passing through.
the non-felting wool and through the meshes of the hair cloth or similar fabric. and the layers of felting wool being felted by any suitable manipulation. The fibers connecting the two layers of felting wool may be either portions of such felting wool extending down through the non-felting wool and woven fabric, or they may be composed of threads of yarn or felting wool stitched through the whole before the felting operation has been performed. In some instances I may omit the fibers connecting the layers of felting wool, but preferably these are employed. since they result in a firmer and more desirable pad.
The invent on will be best understood by reference to the accompanying drawings, in
Specification of Letters Patent.

upper layerthereof. In making the pads, preferably a pair of the pads are constructed at the same time by laying down a circular piece of hair cloth 1, and then inclos ng it between thelayers 2 and 3 of non-felted and of a slightly greater diameterthan the layers of non-felted wool, andalso have theirperipheries thinned or trimmed oif to form a-taperlng edge;
The parts having been thus assembled,
fibers of the felting wool 4 and 5. as indicated at 6 (Fig.2) are drawn back and forth through the non-felted wool and the meshes of the hair cloth by suitable needles, well'known in the art for performing such a function. and after this is done. the usual or any suitable felting o eration is employed to felt the layers of felting wool. If desired, instead of drawing fibers of felting wool from themasses 4 and 5 through the non-felted wool and the hair cloth. threads of wool and yarn, preferably of a felting character. may be passed back and fo"tl1 throu h the mass, after which the fe ting operation is performed. After the felting operation, the structure shown in Fig. 1 may be'cut in two on a diametri al line, thereby forming a pair of pads. The hair cloth or other similar or suitable fabric tends to impart the desired stiffness to the pad, the non-felted wool render-sit resilient.and the layers of felt ng wool serve to unite the whole. and to fo m the desired felt-like outer surface for the pad as a whole.
What is claimed is:
1. A arment pad c mpris ng a lavelnof wo en fabric. a laver of non-felted fibers on e ch si e of said fabric. and two'layers of felted fibers with said fabric and non-felted fibers between them.
2. A arment pad compris ng a la er of wo en abric; a laye of nonelted fibers on e h si e of s id fabr c. and two layers of felted fibers with said fa ric and n n-fe ted fi ers between t em. s id layers of felted fi e s bein fe ed together around a portion of their peripheries.
3, A garment pad comprising a layer of.
felted fibers with said fabric and non-felted fibers between them. said felted layers being connected by strands of felting fibers extending through the non-felted fibers and said fabric.
5. A garment pad comprising a layer of woven fabric,a layer of non-felted fibers on each side of said fabric, two layers of felted fibers with said fabric and non-felted fibers between them, said felted. layers being; connected by strands of felting fibers extending through the non-felted fibers and said fabric and having a portion of their peripheries felted together.
6. A garment pad comprising a layer of hair cloth, two layers of non-felted wool with saidhair cloth between, them, and two Copies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressingthe Commissioner of Patents;
layers'of felting wool :with' said hair cloth; and non-felted wool between them.
7. A garment padx comprising a layer of hair cloth, two layers of now felted wool: with said hair cloth between ;them,; and two layers of felt with said hair cloth and none felted wool between them, said layers of felt beingconnected by fibers of felting wool ex-v felted wool between them, said layersofs felt beingconnectecl by felting the same,to-,
gether at a portion'tof their peripheries and by felting fibers extending through the ,haizn:
cloth and non-felted wool. I V
In testimony whereof I have signed this specification in thescribing witnesses.
