These sheets may contain reference matter, such as price lists or compiled information of any desired kind, or they may be provided with blank surfaces or ruled surfaces for memorandums to be placed thereon from time to time, I find it convenient in some instances to provide ruled spaces having marginal indications corresponding to the days of the week, as indicated in Fig. l, and it will be noted in that figure that the uppermost card or sheet has been drawn out to give access to the ruled spaces on the sheet below. Obviously memorandums may be made at suitable distances ahead by drawing out two or more of the sheets to give access to the lower sheet or sheets.

In the accompanying drawing it has been necessary to grossly exaggerate the thicknesses of the various materials in order to represent them in section, but the material of the frame 6 will preferably be of very thin sheet metal of sufiicient rigidity, and a sufficient number of memorandum sheets will be placed in the recess '1 so as to bring the topmost sheet close up to the frame 6 which will provide a substantially flush upper surface for the slide or support 1 so that the use of the slide or support for any purpose is not affected, and it will also be seen that by pushing in the slide, the topmost memorandum or reference sheet will be completely concealed from view where that is desirable, while at the same time the memorandum or reference sheets are retained at a very convenient position, especially in the case of a desk or table shelf, for access to the topmost sheet or any sheet of the series.

In some instances, especially where the shelf or slide or other support is used as a writing table or support, and it is desired to have the top surface thereof perfectly flush, I provide a sheet of transparent material, indicated at 15, which is preferably hinged at one end to the frame 6, as indi cated at 16, in any desired manner, so that when it lies horizontally, as in Fig. 3, it has its top surface flush with the top surface of the slide. For this purpose, the transparent sheet 15, which is preferably of celluloid or analogous material, is made of substantially the same thickness as the frame 6, and as a matter of fact, this transparent sheet 15 will ordinarily rest upon the topmost card or memorandum sheet 10, and be supported by said sheets, although it may be supported in any other way, if desired. This transparent sheet will also protect the writing or other characters on the memorandum or reference sheets 10 when it is in horizontal position, and it may be raised at any time to afford access to the topmost sheet or any superimposed sheet, if the topmost sheet or sheets, is or are drawn out for the purpose of making entries or erasuresthereon, as indicated in Figs. 1, 2, and 3.

I prefer to provide the transparent sheet at one end with some means by which it can be easily lifted, as for example, with the finger notch 17 and the other end of the sheet is preferably provided with laterally extending studs or trunnions, indicated at 16 in Fig. 4:, in any desired manner, which are capable of being inserted into and removed from notched or recessed hinge members 16", see Fig. 1, so that the transparent sheet 15 can be inserted and removed as de- 'sired, although this is not essential. In Fig. 4 I have shown the notch member 16 in the form of an open spring clip secured to the rear transverse member of the frame 6, and I have been obliged to exaggerate materially the difference of the thickness of the various parts in this figure in order to make it clear, but this construction does not interfere with supporting the transparent sheet upon the topmost memorandum or reference card, as before described.

In some instances, I prefer to provide the memorandum or reference cards with index tabs or projections 10, as indicated in Fig. 5, which project outwardly beyond the slot 4 and may be provided with indications, the said tabs being located in different positions transversely of the card on the several cards, so that any particular card or cards of the series may be seized by means of their connected tabs and drawn out.

In some instances I prefer to provide the frame with longitudinally disposed guides by means of which the memorandum or reference sheets may be retained in conjunction with the frame, and which will serve to guide the movement of the cards or sheets in the use of the device. Thus, in Figs. 6 and 7 I have indicated a frame 6 provided with longitudinal guides 6 on its lower face to receive the cards or sheets, here indicated at 10. The longitudinal guides 6 will also serve as a guide in marking the upper face of the support or slide to indicate the width of the recess 4: to be formed therein, and by inserting the device in the recess 4: and marking along the exterior edges of the frame the width and location of the upper recess 5 may also be accurately determined.

In some instances I may prefer to provide supporting means for the transparent sheet or plate around its edges instead of permitting it to rest directly upon the reference or memorandum cards, and in Figs. 6 and 7 I have shown the frame 6 provided with a recess 6 in its upper face surrounding the opening within the frame to receive the transparent sheet, here indicated 13 155 and supportit along its edges. The

In some lnstances- I find it advantageous of each card being located at a different point transversely of the cards and overlapping other portions of the edges of the cards beneath. These-tabs or projections l0 may or may not be provided with index characters, as preferred. It will be observed 7 that with this construction, if any one of the lower cards is drawn out, itsfouter edge will engage the tab or tabs 1O of the card or cards above the same and draw them out with it, so as to expose the card below; Thus, for example, in Fig. 8, if it is desiredto inspect a memorandum onthe lowermost card or sheet, or
