To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, FRANK COREY, a citizen of the United States, residing at East Berlin in the county of Hartford and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Chucks, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in chucks, and the object of my improvement is simplicity and economy in construction and convenience and efficiency in use.
In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 is a side elevation of my improved chuck. Fig. 2 is an end elevation of the same. Fig.
3 is a sectional view on an enlarged scale on the line X X of Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a similar view with certain parts shown in side elevation. Fig. 5 is a side elevation of the body portion of the spindle member. Fig. 6 is a view corresponding to Fig. 4 of a modification of my chuck. Fig. 7 is a sectional View of certain parts shown in Fig. 6.

, Considering the spindle member as a whole the same comprises a conical portion 16 at the front end having a screw threaded periphery, a cylindrical middle portion 17 and a cylindrical, relatively reduced extension 18 at the rear end. At the junction of the middle portion 17 and the rear, reduced extension 18 there is a shoulder 19, and adjacent the said shoulder 19 there is'a groove 20 in the extension 18 forming a raceway for the balls 15. The shell member comprises a body portion 12 that is provided with a bore that fits Fig. 10 is a rear lindrical portion 17 of the spindle member, the space at the rear end'between the said bore and the extension 18, except for that the grooves 21 and is connected at the rear end with the said body part 12 by a screw thread connection. shown at 33.
The'jaws 14 have screw threads on the lower sides for engaging with the screw thread 16 on the spindle member.
The construction so far described is or' dinary.
The spindle member is of novel construction, particularly at the front end. The rear end comprising the extension 18, groove 20, and shoulder 19 have already been described, and are found on the body portion 10. The middle. enlarged cylindrical portion 17 is divided, the rear part thereof being in the form of an integral collar 24 or abutment, onvthe body-portion'10 and the front part on the carriage 11. At the front end of the body portion lO there is a for wardly extending cylindrical extension 23 which is a fit for the internal bore in the carriage 11. 7
The carriage has at constituting the front end portion of the cylindrical portion 17.
The opposed. faces 25 of the collar 24 andv the carriage 11 are in the form of helical end cam faces. face 25 of the carriage 11 is cut away to provide a recess 26 'and the opposed end A portion of the end cam.
The body part i the front end. portion i the conical thread 16, the rear end portion cam face 25 of the collar or abutment 24 is I provided witha forwardly projecting stop lug 27 that is housed in the said recess 26 and cooperates therewith to limit the rela tive rotative movement of the body portion 10 and carriage 11. The carriage 11 is assembled on the body portion 10 by being slipped on the front extension 23,.the lug 27. being brought into registration with the. recess 26, and longitudinal separation of these parts is prevented by the engage,-
ment of the opposed conical portions of the spindle member and shell member at the front end and engagement of the closure 13 on the shoulder 19 through the medium of the balls 15 at the rear end.
The opposed end cam faces provide a means of effecting a relative longitudinal movement of the body portion 10 and the carriage 11, whereby, a tightening and re leasing of the jaws 14 may be effected independent of the usual means provided by the conical screw thread 16, effecting what is termed a quick release,
In the modification shown in Figs. 6, 7, and 8 the quick release is effected by means of a cylindrical thread 25 provided on the extreme end portion of the forwardly extending extension 23 on the body portion 10 engaged with a corresponding threaded part of the bore of the carriage 11*. As the thread 25 comprises a plurality of complete turns the carriage ll must be turned a corresponding number of complete turns to effect a full engagement of the parts.
Furthermore because of such complete relative rotation of these parts, the lug 27 on the abutment 2 1 is made removable in the form of a loose piece secured thereto by a screw 28. The front end of the piece 27 constitutes the lug proper and engages with the recess 26 The opposed faces of the abutment 24 and the car'iage 11 are finished plane and annular.
In the style shown in Figs. 9, 10, 11, and 12 the construction differs from that shown in Fig. 6 in the form of the screw thread 25 In this case there is a single ball 29 that forms the locking member in cooperation with a single hole or well 34 in the extension 23 and a helical groove 31 in the wall of the bore 32 .of the carriage 11 The threads 25 and 25 and the end cam faces 25 constitute equivalent means for effecting a relatively quick release of the jaws, being of steeper pitch than the thread 16, and may all be described as a relatively coarse thread.
I claim as my invention 1. A chuck comprising a spindle member, a shell member inclosing the same, and a set of jaws operatively housed in the said .members, the said spindle member comprising a body portion and a carriage mounted on the front end of the same, the said body portion and carriage having engaging portions of helical form the said carriage hav ing a screw thread on its periphery, and the said jaws having teeth engaged with the said thread.
2. In a chuck, a spindle member comprising a body portion and a reduced extension at the front end thereof, and a carriage mounted on the said extension, the said earriage having a jaw engaging thread 011 its periphery, and thesaid body portion and carriage having cooperating portions of helical form.
3. A chuck comprising a spindle member, a shell member inclosing the same, and a set of jaws operatively housed in the said members and having teeth, the said spindle member comprising a body portion and a carriage mounted in the front end of the same, the said body portion and carriage having engaging portions of helical form, means for limiting the relative movement of the said body portion and carriage and the said carriage having a screw thread for engaging with the said teeth.
4. In a chuck, a spindle member comprising a body portion and a reduced extension at the front end, a carriage rotatively mounted on the said extension and hawing a jaw engaging screw thread on its periphery, the said body portion and carriage having cooperating portions of helical form, and means for limiting the rotative movement ofthe said carriage on the said extension.
5. In a chuck, a spindle member, a shell member generally inclosing the said spindle member and having converging ways, jaws housed in the said ways, the said spindle member comprising a main part having free 95 rotative engagement with the said sheil member and a carriage supported by the said main part, the said carriage having a screw thread on the periphery for engaging with the said jaws, and the said carriage and body portion having cooperating portions of helical form.
6. I11 a chuck, a spindle member having a cylindrical body portion, a reduced neck portion at the rear end and a reduced extension at the front end, and having a carriage operatively mounted on the said extension, the said earriage comprising a cylindrical portion at the rearend in extension of the said cylinder body portion and a tapered portion at the front end, a shell member fitting over the said spindle member, and having ways for jaws, jaws housed in the said ways, the said shell member and the said tapered portion of the carriage having means for operating the said jaws, and the said body portion and carriage having cooperating helical portions.

In a chuck, a spindle member having a cylindrical body portion, a reduced neck portion at the rear end and a reduced extensaid tapered portion of the carriage having means for operating the said jaws, the said body portion and carriage having cooperting helical portions, and means for limiting the rotative movement of the said carriage on the said extension.

In a chuck, a spindle member having a cylindrical body portion, a reduced neck portion at the rear end and a reduced extension at the front end, and having a carriage operatively mounted on the said extension, the said carriage comprising a cylindrical portion at the rear end in extension of the said cylindrical body portion, and a tapered portion at the front end, a shell member fitting over the said spindle member, and having ways for jaws, jaws housed in the said ays, the said shell member and the said tapered portion of the carriage having means for operating the said jaws, the said body portion and carriage having cooperating helical portions, and means integral With the said body portion and carriage for limiting the rotative movement of the said carriage on the said extension.
9. In a chuck, a spindle member suitable for being inclosed in a shell member composed of a main part and a carriage, the said main part comprising a cylindrical body portion and reduced portions on each side of the said body portion, the end face on one end of the said body portion serving as a bearing face for a ball bearing, and the end face on the other end of the said body portion serving as an end cam bearing surface.
10. In a chuck, a spindle member composed of a main part and a carriage, the said main part comprising a body portion and a reduced extension atone end thereof, the said carriage being mounted on the said extension, and the opposed portions of the said body portion and carriage being in the form of end cam faces.
11. In a chuck, a spindle member composed of a main part and a carriage, the said main part comprising a body portion and a reduced extension at one end thereof, the said carriage being mounted on the said extension, the opposed portions of the said body portion and carriage being in the form of end cam faces, and means for limiting relative rotative movement ofthe saidcarriage on the said extension.
12. In a chuck, a spindle member composed of a main part and a carriage, the said main partcomprising a body portion and a reduced extension at one end thereof, the said carriage being mounted on the said extension, the opposed portions of the said body portion and carriage being in the form of end cam faces, and means integral with the said body portion and carriage for limiting rotative movement of the said carriage on the said extension.
13. In a chuck, a spindle member composed of a main part and a carriage, a shell member rotatively mounted on the said spindle member, and having generallv free converging longitudinal Ways, aws housed in the said Ways, the said carriage having ,threaded engagement With the said jaws and being mounted on the said main part so as to have generally free rotative and longitudinal movement, and the said shell member serving to limit such longitudinal movement in one direction.
14. In a chuck, a spindle member having a body portion provided With a cylindrical periphery and reduced portions on each end thereof, a carriage mounted on one of the said reduced portions, a shell member, the said shell member comprising a main part extending over the said carriage and body portion, fitting the said periphery, and a set of balls housed between the said main part and the other of the said reduced portions, and in bearing engagement therewith.
