EAR-BRAND FOR STOCK.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 27, 1916.
AppIication filed December 24, 1915. Serial No. 68,474.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, CLEMENT CAMM Dnnnn'rr, a subject of the King of Great Britain, residing at 11 Fisher street, Beckenham, Christchurch, in the Dominion of New Zealand, have invented new and useful Tmprovements in Ear-Brands for Stock, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to means for ear marking or branding stock and refers to the particular type of branding device comprising a pair of washers or plates adapted to be clamped upon the two sides of the car by connecting means adapted to pass through a suitable hole provided for the purpose in the ear. As hitherto constructed, it has been found possible by the use of a drill, file, or other well-known tools, to cut away a portion of the said connecting memher and so enable the washers to be detached from the ear.
It is the object of the present invention therefore to provide a construction which, when once attached to the ear, can only be removed therefrom with great difficulty and necessitating such laborious and skilful use of tools as to render such removal impracticable.
In order that the nature of the invention and its construction may be fully understood, reference will now be made to the accompanying sheet of drawings in which 1- Figure l is a perspective view of the device upon an enlarged scale, Fig. 2- is an edge view of the same showing the plates in position ready to be secured, Fig. 3 is a similar view to Fig. 2 but showing the securing means in the clenched condition, Fig. i is an edge view of the device in readiness to be placed upon the ear, and, Fig. 5- shows a suitable tool for use in affixing the device.
The device consists of the usual plates 1 and 2 adapted to be placed and secured one upon either side of the ear, such plates being either separate or, as here shown, connected together by means of an integral web 3 which facilitates the work of athxing the device to the ear.
According to the present invention, in order to secure the plates together the latter are pressed or stamped with indentations in their outer faces and which indentations constitute upon the reverse or inner faces projections adapted to be received one within the other and to be clenched in the particular manner hereinafter described. For this purpose upon the plate 1 is provided an indentation of hollow or bowlshaped formation and in the extremity of wh ch is formed a central hole through which is adapted to be passed a projection or shank 5 constituted by the indentation in the plate 2. The arrangement is such that when the washers are placed in position (as shown in Fig. 2) the application of pressure to the said connecting means will cause the end of the shank 5 to spread into the hollow or bowl-shaped formation of the indentation 4t and so serve to secure such washers firmly together. By this construction it will. be seen that, should the end of the shank 5 be cut away by drilling or filing, such shank will still retain its grip by reason of the fact that the sides of such shank will still remain expanded against the concave inner surface of the indentation a. In practice a hole is punched through the ear to receive the said connecting means and the latter placed in position and clenched by the epiployment of a suitable tool, such as for instance that shown in Fig. 5. The said tool consists of a pair of pliers in the upper jaw 6 of which is provided a punch 7 adapted to perform the clenching of the shank 5. In practice the branding device may be placed within the jaw of the pliers, the punch 7 being inserted within the indentation 4 while the plate 2 is supported in the required position by means of a flat spring 8 provided upon the lower jaw 9 of such pliers. The car may then be inserted between the plates and the jaws of the pliers closed by grippingthe handles 10, which action will serve to effect both the punching of the ear and the clenching of the connecting means.
I claim:
1. An ear brand for stock comprising a pair of plates, and opposed bowl shaped projections on the inner surfaces of said plates, one of said projections being larger than the other and having the top thereof cut off to receive the second projection, and the second projection being adapted to be upset within the bowl of the larger projection, the upset portion being between the outer plate surfaces and the hole being closed thereby.
2. An ear brand for stock comprising a pair of plates, a hinge connection between said plates, and opposed bowl shaped projections on the inner surfaces of said plates, one of said projections being larger than the other and having the top thereof cut plate surfaces and the hole being closed 10 thereby.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
CLEMENT OAMM DERRETT. Witnesses: CYRIL GARLYON CoA'ms, SIDNEY JAMES TRELEAVEA.
Camelot this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the Commissioner or l'atents, Washington, 10.0."
