Description

UNITED SrA'rEs PATENT Qrrron PETER. CHASE YOST, OF GARTHAGE, ASSIGNOR TO HIMSELF AND WILLIAM B. RAPER, OF FERRIS, ILLINOIS.
IMPROVEMENTA IN FENCES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 120,178, dated October 24, 1871.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, PETER OHAsE Yos'r, of Garthage, Illinois, have made a new and useful Improvenent in Portable Fences, of which the following is a specifioation:
The object of this invention is to provide a means of readily forming a good, simple, and praetical portable fence out of ordinary feneingtimber and nails only, With a great econony of materials and other advantages and also a portable gate.
It is made as shown in the drawing.
Figure l is an elevation of a portion of the fence. Fig. 2 is another portion with gate, and Fig. 3 is a cross-section.
The fence is formed of separate panels united end to end in a line, .and having trussels to support them at each joint. The panels are formed of four or other number of boards, A B C D, united by cross-parts E F placed intermediate to the ends, as shown, so as to stiffen the central parts of panel While the ends are held by the trussels, thus saving material to make a good fence. The trussels G are formed of boards H I K, nailed together, as shown, and having a deep vertical-sided notch, L, cnt in the top to receive the joined ends of the panel-boards A AI and notchMto receive those of G O' to hold the panels seeurely in place. The panel-boards also have notches cut in their under sides to fit over those notches, so that the panels are efi'ectually held in each direction, as by locks.
In joining the ends of the panels the ends of the boards lap onto each other a few inohes, and are so arranged th at the alternate boards on each panel go first on one side and then on the other, so that they press and bind against each other and help to hold the panels in position firmly.
The gate is forned of a sliding panel, N, having two parts, O P, running back onto or beside the boards of a regular panel, and into sleeves B S thereon, which hold them and support the gate. This can then be slid up to open the gate and drawn out to olose it.
The notches in the panel-boards may be varied in position when passing uneven ground to allow the fence to conforn to the surface.
VVhat I clainvis- The portable fence and gate made, as set forth, with panels, trussels, and interlocking notches, and with parts sliding in sleeves It S on a portable panel, substantially as set'forth.
