SHOWER-BATH APPARATUS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 5, 1916.
Application filed October 26, 1916. Serial No. 127,816.
To all whom t may concern Be it known that I, PATRICK J. DUFFY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Massillon, in the county of Stark and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Shower-Bath Apparatus, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to shower bath apparatus and has more especial reference to an apparatus of this nature in which the spray nozzles are adjustably mounted and arranged to throw a spray simultaneously upon the front and back of the bather and so arranged that either sitting or standing within the tub the bathers hair will not be wet by the spray of water.
The object of the present invention is to provide a shower bath apparatus in which the water is fed by gravity to the spray nozzles from a mixing tank in which the hot and cold water from the faucet may be properly mixed to the desired temperature.
A further object is to provide a device of this character in which the water is fed from a supply tank by gravity rather than from the city pressure, thus spraying the water from the spray nozzles with just sufficient force to strike the body and not splash or wash away the lather too quickly.
A further object is the provision of a shower bath apparatus in which adjustable spray nozzles are arranged to throw a spray upon the front and back of the bather.
With these objects in view the invention consists in the novel construction and arrangement of parts, hereinafter described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and particularly pointed out in the appended claims, it being understood that various changes in the form, proportions, size and minor details of construction may be made within the scope of the appended claims without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.

2 is a rear elevation of one pair of spray nozzles. Fig. 3 is a section on the line 33, Fig. 2 parts being broken away for the purpose of illustration. Fig. A is a detail perspective view of the device by means of which the shower bath apparatus is attached to the faucet. Fig. 5 is a sectional view of` one of the pivotal joints of the spray maratea Similar numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts throughout the several figures of the drawing.
Referring more especially to the construe tion illustrated in the accompanying drawing, the letter A indicates a bath tub of any usual and well known construction provided uitlg the ordinary hot and cold water nozz e The numeral 1 indicates a block provided with a central aperture 2 arranged to receive the usual combination, hot and cold water faucets, a downwardly depending neck 3 being provided around said aperture and a stopper plug l being located in said neck and preferably connected to the block 1 by means of a chain 5. A pair of yokes 6 are located around the faucet, the extremities thereofextending through apertures 7 in the block 1. thumb nuts 8 or their equivalents being placed upon the lower extremities of said yokes.
The pipe 9 is connected. to the neck 3 and extends upwardly to the mixing tank 10, which tank is preferably connected to the wall in any suitable and well known manner and if desired may be provided with a cover 11 to keep dust and dirt out of the water contained therein. Connected to the pipe 9, preferably a short distance above the top of the tub is a pipe 12, said pipe being located around the upper edge of the tub and slightly inclined toward the rear of the tub where it is supported by a standard 13. A valve 111 is provided in the pipe 12 adjacent the point where said pipe is connected to the pipe 9 and a short vertically disposed pipe 15 is pivotally connected to the pipe 12 and communicates with said pipe as best illustrated in Fig. 5, the lower extremity of the pipe 15 being turned inwardly and tapered as shown at 16, said tapered portion being located through suitable apertures 17 provided through the pipe 12, a packing 18 being provided around the joints thus formed in order to provide a water tight joint. The extremity of the tapered portion 16 is closed and provided with a screw threaded stud 19, a nut 20 being provided thereon to draw the tapered portion of the pipe 15 into snug engagement with the apertures in the pipe 12. Apertures 21 are provided within the tapered portion 16 in order to afford communication between the pipes 15 and 12.

the spray nozzles 22, which are carried thereby, in line with the longitudinal center of the tub. A valve 23 is preferably located intermediate the extremities of the pipe 15 in order to separately cut off the supply of water. Pivotally connected to the rear extremity'of the pipe 12 is a pipe 24, the connection between said lpipe and the pipe 12 being the same as the connection between the pipe 15 and the pipe-12. The upper extremity of the pipe 24 is provided with a T- coupling 25 through which is located the pipe 26, the outer extremities of which are bent inwardly at right angles as indicated at 27 and provided with spray nozzles 28. If desiredv the pipe 26 upon which these spray Vnozzles are carried may be rotatably mounted within the T-coupling 25. A valve 29 is preferably provided intermediate the extremities of the pipe 24 in order to separately cut off the water supply to the spray nozzles 28. A valve 30 is located at the rear, -lower extremity of the pipe 12 for the purpose of draining the apparatus after the same has been used. Each of the spray nozzles 28 is provided with a short neck 31 arranged to fit upon the reduced portion 32 of the adjacent pipe 27 and the spray nozzles 22 may, if desired, be attached in the same manner.

The purpose of this device is to gradually decrease the tempera- 'ture of the water and this may be accomplished by gradually reducing the liame in fthe burner 34, thus allowing the temperature of `the water to be gradually decreased without any sudden shock to the bather.
In use the plug 4 is inserted within the neck 3 and the valve 14 closed after which the hot and cold faucets are turned on filling the tank 10 with water of the desired temperature. If desired the burner 34 may then be lighted. The pipes 15 and 24 may be set at any desired angle to strike the bather in the front and back, either in a sitting or standing position within the tub and the valve 14 is then opened and the faucets may be closed, the water from the mixing tank being supplied to the spray nozzles byforce of gravity or atmospheric pressure in just sufficient quantity to spray the body of the bather and avoid splashing, and thus eliminating the'use of a curtain.'l If desired, the faucets may be left open in order to produce a stronger spray.

The combination with a tub, of a shower bath attachment for faucets comprising an upright pipe having means for connection with the nozzle of the faucet, means for clamping the pipe to the body portion of the faucet, a mixing tank located at the upper extremity of said pipe, a horizontally disposed pipe connected to said upright pipe intermediate the extremities thereof, and located around the upper edge of the tub, a pipe pivotally connected to said horizontally disposed pipe adjacent each end of the tub and spray nozzles carried by each of said pivotally connected plpes and directed to throw sprays within the tub.
