LEGGING.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. 20,1917.
Application filed February 8, 1915. Serial No. 6,708.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LILIAN G. TEARE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Duluth, in the county of St. Louis and State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Leggings, of which I do hereby declare the following to be a specification.
-My invention relates to leggings andhas for its object the provision of an improved form of legging which will substantially envelop the foot and which will provide a neat, close fitting covering for the shoe, an kle and leg. While my invention is of great value under various conditions, as for wear in automobiles, or other vehicles, and for out-door wear with dress shoes or dancing. vpumps, it is especlally designed for walking binding 4. Said leg and foot portion are preferably more or less elastically woven or lmit as in a stocking, without front, side or back openings, the foot portion extending under the foot or shoe of the wearer. An aperture 2 is formed in the bottom of the heel of the legging for the passage of the heel of the shoe, the edges of which aperture are preferably bound with leather or tape or other suitable protective material; but, if desired, such binding may be omitted in which eventthe edges of said aperture may be finished in weaving so as not to ravel. It will be observed that by providing for the passage of the heel of the shoe the stretching of the instep arch is avoided and said goods will, instead-,- follow the curve of said arch; also the projecting heel of the shoe will prevent contact of the heel of the legging with the ground. Upon the toe of said legging is stitched or otherwise suitably secured an exterior tread sole, as said sole 3. The ankle or leg portion of said legging may be of any suitable or' desirable length, and, if desired, a pair of such leggings may be embodied in a singlegarment, as in tights. I am aware that knitted leggings, open at the bottom at the toe and heel and provided with an instep strap, are old in the art, but that they are subject to the objection that they tend to curl outward at the lower edges and do not warmly cover the bottom of the foot. Not only is this objection obviated in my invention but my construction provides a particularly warm-and close fitting combined stocking and shoe .cover'of neat and attractive appearance for the use of women, and one that will effectually protect from abrasion the delicate surface or polish of a high grade shoe. Further, by extending the knitted portion beneath the sole of the shoe and only may the sole of the legging be made .light, thin and flexible. without danger of and said legging havingan aperture formed therein at the bottom of the heel for the passage of the heel of the shoe of the wearer.
between it and the sole of the legging, not
2. A legging comprising an elastic knitted or wovenfoot portion adapted to be drawn over and to extend beneath and inclose the foot of a shoe except the heel of such shoe, said legging being provided with an opening at the lower end for the passage of the heel of the shoe of the wearer, said legging embodying an exterior tread sole at the forepart only thereof.
3. In a legging, the combination of a knitted or Woven stocking portion adapted to be drawn over and to extend beneath a shoe, a tread sole for the forepart only of said stocking portion, said stocking portion having an aperture formed in the bottom of the heel thereof for the passage of the heel of the shoe of the wea'rer, and a protective binding secured tothe edge of said aperture.
In testimony whereof I hereunto afiix my signature, in presence of two witnesses.
