GRQUND-MAT.
. To all whom it may concern:
I which,
Be it known that I, NATHAN ROSENBERG, a subject of the King .of Roumania, and a resident of the city of Chicago, county of Cook, and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in- Ground-Mats, of which .thefollowing is a specification. I
My invention relates to ground mats, that is to devices designed to be spread upon the ground in order to serve as a protection for a person when lying on the ground. The object of my invention is the production of a device of the character mentioned which will be of durable and economical construction, one which will be of a foldable nature permitting of collapsing or folding into a small compass for storage or transpor-,
tation, and one which will be efficient in use.
Other objects will appear hereinafter. The invention consists in the combinations and arrangements of parts hereinafter described and claimed.
reference to the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification, and in Figure 1 'is a perspective view of the device extendedfor use,
Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the same in folded condition, and
Figs. 3 and 4 are perspective views of the two parts comprlsing each of the fastening devices employed in the construction.
The preferred form of construction, as illustrated in the drawing, comprises an elongated rectangular sheet 1 of fabric such as canvas which may be readily folded and rolled. Provided at one end of said sheet,-
upon the upper side thereof is a pneumatic cushion 2, said cushion being provided with a valved tube 3 whereby the same may be readily inflated or deflated. At one edge of the cushion 2 are provided two outwardly projecting straps 4 which are detachably secured to the sheet 1 by securing devices A,
hereinafter described.
Provided -at the corresponding end of sheet 1 is a flexible casing or holder 5 formed of leather or other water-proof material which is adapted to inclose the sheet 1 and the cushion 2 when said cushion is collapsed and the parts are folded and rolled together. A strap 6 is provided which is adapted to encircle the casing 5 in order to securely Specification of Letters lPatent.

hold the same in inclosing position. Also provided upon said casing is a suitable handle 7. In the folding of the, sheet 1, the same is preferably folded along the lines 8, the longitudinal edge portions being folded inwardly one upon the other over the cushion which previously has been deflated.
This having beendone, the sheet is rolled up starting at the foot end thereof, in the manner clearly shown in Fig. 2.
The casing 5 is detachably secured to the sheet 1 also by means of fastening devices A 1 are yieldingly connected together so as to The invention will be best understood by permit of. ready removal of the socket members in order to permit of detachment of either the cushion or the casing when desired.- The straps 4 being flexible, permitof the cushion being swung over to position upon the casing if desired, in order to extend the efiective length of the device.
With a device of the construction set forth, it will be seen that a complete protection willbe afi'orded to the person lying thereon so as to prevent soiling of the clothes, a comfortable head rest or seat, as the case may be, being also afiorded by the cushion.
While I have illustrated and described the preferred form of construction for carrying my invention into efiect, this is capable of variationand modification without departing from the spirit of the invention. I, therefore, do not wish to be limited to the precise details of construction set forth, but desire to avail myself of such variations and modifications as come within the scope of the appended claims.
Having described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patentis:
1. A device of the class described comprisin a flexible sheet; a collapsible cushion provi ed at the upper side of said sheet at Mid lldd
III?
ing said cushion to said sheet so as to per m1t of said cushion assuming a position on said sheet or beyond the adjacent edge thereof ;.and a casing connected with said edge of said sheet upon which said cushion is adapted to rest, when in a position extending beyond said edge of the sheet, said casing being adapted to inclose said sheet when in folded condition, substantially as described.
' 2. A device of the class described comprising a flexible sheet; a collapsible cushion provided at the upper side of said sheet at one end thereof and adapted, when collapsed, to bewrapped in said sheet; flexible straps loosely connectin one edge of said cushion with said edge 0 said sheet so as to permit of said cushion'assuming aposition on said sheet or beyond'the adjacent edge thereof; and a casing connected with said edge of said sheet upon which said cushion is ada ted to rest, when in a position extending eyond said edge of the sheet, said casing being adapted to inclose said sheet when in folded condition, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name-to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses,
NATHAN ROSENBERG.
