ALFRED N. BEssEsEN, or MINNEAPOLIS, rluivNEso'rA.l e
sYniNeE;
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 17, v191'?.
i Application med June 15,1916.. seal No. 103,781.
To all whom z't may concern.' l
Be itknown that I, ALFRED N. BnssnsnN, a citizen of the United States, residing at 'Minneapolis in the county of Hennepin and State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Syringes;
and I do declare the following to be a full,
clear, and exact descriptionI 'f the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in syringes designed more' particularly for the hypodermic 1njection of anesthetic or other fluids into `the 'tissues of the human body, `or for such other same can be 'relled without removing the needle from the' body.
'A further object of the invention is to generally improve upon devices of this character by the provision of a simple, comparatively strong, durable and inexpensive construction which will be eiiicient and reliable 1n operation and well adapted to the purpose for whichitisdesignedn; v
With these and other objects in view, the invention consistsv of certain details of construction, and the combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter fully described and cla' ed. f
In the accompanying drawings, in, which like parts are deslgnated by similar reference characters throughout the -several views Figure 1 represents a side elevation of a syringe lconstructed in accordance with this invention, showing a pair .of .medicament tached being removed;'and,
plane of4 the line of. Fig.
containing `receptacles connected to the same; Fig. 2 is 'a central longitudinal sectional view through the barrel of the syringe;
Fig. 3 is an elevation of one end ofthe barrel, the cap to which the needle is at- Fi 4 is a sectional vle'w taken on the Referring more particularly tothe' drawings, the reference numeral 1 represents a cylindrical or tubular barrel, which may be constructed of any suitable material, but preferably of metal or glass.' `One end of the barrel 1, which may be designated as the rear end, is internally threaded as at 2 for the reception of an externally threaded plug 3, the latter closing this end and being provided with a centrally. arrangedopening 4 therein'through which extends a stem 5 carried by a plunger 6 disposed within the i.
interior-of the barrel. The free end of the stem 54 is provided with a suitable handle 7 between the inner side of` which and the outer endv of the cap 3 is disposed a coil'A spring 8, the purpose of whichis to normally hold saidpplunger in its retracted osition.
Extending laterallyfrom'one si e of the barrel 1 at the rear end thereof isa handle member 9, while extending similarly from` the diametrically opposite side of the barrel is a stem 10, said vmember 9 and stem 10 being adapted to be engaged by the fingers of the person usin vthe device when depressing the plunger.
tively short stems or nipples 11 having passages 12 extending therethrough. which inter-v sect a passage 13 extendingithrough the stem 10. -The stem 10 at the point of intersec'f tion of the passages 12 with the passage 13 is provided with a transversely extending opening 14 in whichgismounted-ini-anysuitd able mannerarotary plug or valve115,"the
"latter Vhaving apassage 16 extending therethrough, said passage 16 being adapted to openone of the passages 12 into communlcal v tion with the'passage 13, whereby l`the dehe free end ofthe stem f 10 is provided with'a plurality of comparasired medicamentl may be fedor supplied by .the feed pipes or tubes 17 'from a plurality of containers 18.
The forward end of the barrel 1 is'reduced vin diameter and is externally threaded to provide forthe reception of vthe internally threaded cap- 19 't0l which the needle20 or other nozzle member is connected in the usual of the drawings, formed integral y with the forward endl of the which is provided with a recess 21-hav1ng a.
-valve seat 22 arranged in one side thereof,
in which is disposed a ball valve 23. The valve seat 22 registers with oneend of a passage 24aI which ,extends longitudinally 4manner. As shown clearly by Fi s. 2 and 3 barrel 1 is a head 2Q', i'
through .the wall of the barrel 1 and communicates with the passage 13 which extends through the aforesaid stem 10. The recess 21 communicates vwith the interior of the barrel `by a central opening 25 in theA head and with 'a valve seat 26 arranged in a notch 27 in one edgevof the outer side of the head 20 by a passage 28. Arranged in the valve seat 26 is a ball valve 29. The
cap 19 andthe head 20 with its recess 21- 'and notch A,27 coperate to form suitable compartments in which are retainedfthese inwardly and outwardly opening valves 23 and 29 respectively. Extending through the thereby forcing the plunger G to its forwardmost position within the interior of the barre1`1, which movement forces the air4 contained therein through the opening 25, the passages 28 and 30, and out through the needle 20, it being understood that the ball valve 29 will be thereby moved to its opened position. Upon releasing the pressure upon the handle 7, the spring 8 will force the same to. its outermost position, thereby closing the ball valve 29, opening the ball valve 23 andv drawing Athe contents from one of the' containers 18 into the interior of the barrel. patient in the usual manner, andthe plungerrv depressed, thereby effecting the desired bath. If it is desired to apply the contents of the other container 18, this may be done without removing the needle 20 from the patient, by turning the plug or valve 15 so that. the passage 16 therethrough'opens the passage 12 in the nipple 11 connect-ed to the tube 17 of said other container' in communication with the inlet passage 13 in the stem 10. The aforesaid operation is then repeated which causes the liquid in this other receptacle to be drawn into the interior of the barrel and from there expelled.
`From the foregoing description, it maybe seen that the'objects of the invention have' `been effectively carriedA out as the device can be refilled without removing the needle from the body of the patient,` and further- The needle is then applied to the.
' witnesses.
' meente,
more, it can be supplied with the contents of either one of a plurality of containers without considerable trouble.
As various changes in form, proportion, and in the minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing frompthe spirit of this invention, I do not wish to be limited to the construction herein shown and described, other than that set forth in the appended claim.
A device of the class described comprising a tubular barrel provided with an integrally formed head at one of its ends'and having a handle and a stem extending from diametrically opposite points at the other end thereof, `said head being provided with a recess inits outer side, a central openingV disposed between the recess and the interior of said barrel, a notch in one edge of the outer side of said head, and a ,passage disposed between said notch and said recess` said Stem and said barrel being provided with communicating passages, the passage in said barrel extending longitudinally through the wall of the same and colnmunicating with the recess in saidl head, valve seats formed in the recess and notch and registering with the above mentioned passages leadmg mtothe same, a cap threaded l operating handle extending to the exterior 0f the same.
In testimony whereof l have hereunto set my hand in the presence of two subscriblng i ALFRED N. BESSESEN.
