Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented lway 1, 121%.
Application filed May 12, 1916. Serial No. 97,143.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, OLIVER PALM, a citizen of the United States, residing at Moran, in the county of Shackelford and State of Texas, have invented new and useful Improvements in Containers, of which the folfrom around the closure of the container and injuring other articles.
Another object of the invention is to provide the container with a lining, having a marginal flange and a closing flap so arranged, that the flange and flap form a packing ring which may be held seated against the neck of the receptacle by the closing cap thereof to prevent the contents of the receptacle from escaping between the marginal edge of the cap and mouth of the container.
A further object of the invention is to provide the flange on the lining of the container and the closing cap thereof with extensions which space the edge of the flange and the closing cap from the neck of the container so that the lining may be easily .removed from the container. With these and other objects in view, the 0invention resides in the novel combination and arrangement of arts, which will be hereinafter described and particularly pointed out in the claim.-
The preferred embodiment of theinvention has been illustrated in the, accompanying drawing, although no restriction is necessarily made to the precise details of construction therein shown, as changes, alterations, and modifications within the scope of the claim may be resorted to when desired. Like characters of reference denote corresponding parts throughout the several views inthe drawing, in which:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of a container constructed in accordance with the invention, a portion thereof being broken away.
Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal section through the container and showing the closing cap in place.
Fig. 3 is a top plan view of the closing cap for the container.
Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the lining of the container and showing the closing flap in open position. 7
Fig. 5 is a horizontal transverse sectional View on the line 55 of Fig. 2 in the draw- Referring now to the drawing in detail, the numeral 1 designates the body of the container which may be either square or round in cross section and formed from any suitable material, such as aluminum, or the li (e.
The body 1 gradually increases in diameter from its bottom 2 toward the top thereof,
said body being offset laterally adjacent itstop to provide an annular shoulder 3 arranged exteriorly of the body and inclined to provide a seat 4 at the intersection of the shoulder with the body 1. The shoulder 3 is provided at its outer peripheral edge with a continuous and upstanding flange 5 flared inwardly, as at 6, to over-lie a portion of the shoulder 3, said flange having its upper marginal edge rolled outwardly, as at 7 to receive a strengthening band 8 arranged exteriorly of the flange and above the shoulder 3.
A lining 9 for thebody 1 which maybe formed from waxed paper, or the like, and is so shaped as to provide a body 10 corresponding in shape to the body 1 of the container to enable the linin to snugly contact with the peripheral wafi of the body 1 and bottom thereof when the lining is positioned within the body.
The body 10 of the lining 9 has its upper marginal edge provided with a continuous and outstanding flange 11, corresponding' in shape to the shoulder 3 on the body 1 but of less width than said shoulder, said flange 11 having metrically opposite points tongues 12 which serve to space the marginal edge of the flange from the neck of the container when the flange is in contact with the shoulder 3.
One of the tongues 12 is of greater length than the other tongues on the flange 11 and has formed integral therewith a flap 13 provided with tongues 14 corresponding to the tongues 12 and adapted to contact therewith when the longer tongue 12 on the formed thereon at 'diaflange 11 is folded upon itself to cause the flap 13 to overlie the open end of the lina downward direction will move the tongues 12 and 14 out of contact with the neck of the receptacle and away from the same, so that the thumb-nail can be inserted between the neck of the receptacle and the tongues 12 and 14 to enable the same to be gripped between the thumb and finger and the lining removed from the receptacle.
The closing flap 13 also assists in removing the lining from within the body of the container so that the contents of the container may be removed therefrom 111 a whole condition, the removal of the lining also being facilitated by the inclined peripheral wall of the body.
A closing cap 15 which is slightly greater in diameter than the diameter of the container at the point of intersection of the shoulder 3 with the body 1 is formed from suitable material and provided on its peripheral edge with a continuous upstanding collar 16 adapted to be frictionally engaged with the flange 5 forming the neck of the container when the cap has been positioned within the said neck to bear upon the flange 11 and closing flap 13 of the lining 9 which overlie the shoulder 3, said collar having formed on its upper peripheral edge, a laterally extending flange 17 -adapted to overlie the beaded portion of the flange 5.
The closing cap 15 is provided with spaced upstruek portions or ribs 18, which assist in strengthening the closing cap and also assist in removing the closing cap from the neck of the container.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, it is at once apparent that a container for the purpose set forth has been provided which may be continuously used and which is simple in construction, and therefore, inexpensive of manufacture.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new, is:
A container comprising a flared neck forming an inclined shoulder, a lining within said container having a flange for contact with said shoulder, tongues on said flange for contact with said neck, aclosing flap connected with said flange and having tongues adapted to register with the tongues on the flange when the flap is in closed position, and a closing cap engageable with said neck and adapted to bear on the closing flap and flange above said shoulder.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature.
