Be it known that I, STUART H. SWALLOW, a citizen of the United States, and resident of the city of Providence, in the county of Providence and State of Rhode Island, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Metallic-Leaf-Applying Devices, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to devices for applying metallic films such as gold leaf and the like to surfaces for decorating or other purposes, and the object of this invention is to provide an improved hand tool for this purpose carrying a package-roll of the leaf to be deposited, from which roll the leaf is led on its backing strip, over a delivery roll which lays it. A guide roll is also provided which runs in contact with this delivery roll to grip the backing strip and maintain the required tension of the strip on the surface of the delivery roll and to also assist in leading the strip clear and to the rear of the tool.
A further object of this invention is the provision of a guiding plate or member for preventing the waste strip from interferring with the feed and also for directing the strip downwardly and rearwardly clear of the tool.
lVith these and other objects in view, the invention consists of certain novel features of construction, as will be more fully de scribed, and particularly pointed out in the appended claims.

This device or tool is constructed primarily of a body portion having two spaced apart side plates 10 andll. The back plate 10 is provided with a thickened neck portion 12 to which the operating handle 13 is secured. This neck portion is also provided with two ears 14 pierced at 15 to receive the pintles 16 of the front plate 11 forming a "hinge by which this plate may be raised to Specification of Letters Patent.

permit the positioning of a fresh package roll 17 between them. The back plate is provided with a center pin 18 on which the package roll rotates and the lower portion of this back plate is provided with a fixed pin 19 on which the delivery roll 20 is rotatably mounted.
This delivery roll may be constructed of any suitable material but it is found in practice of advantage to provide this roll with a non-yielding working surface, therefore the roll may be made of metal, fiber or other suitable hard material.
A guide roll 21 whose periphery is preferably constructed of rubber or other suitable yielding material, is mounted on a core 22 of metal or other suitable hard material which is rotatably mounted on the pivot pin 23 secured to the arm 24. The arm as will be seen in Fig. 3, is itself pivoted at 25 on the ear 26 of the back plate and its upper end is engaged by the spring 27 whereby the yielding surface of the guide roll 21 is pressed against the hard surface of the delivery roll with a pressure just sufiicient to cause them to rotate in unison and to bite or grip the used backing strip against the surface of the delivery roll to maintain the desired tension of the strip around its sur face while rolling over and depositing the metal leaf onto the surface being decorated.
An essential feature of this invention is the provision of a guide plate or strip 28 fixed to the back plate, the lower portion of which is concavedas'at 29 so as to deflect, guide and direct the backing strip rearwardly and downwardly and clear-of the device. This plate also serves to prevent the possibility of the used portion of the strip from coming in contact and interfering with the feed'of the strip from the package roll to and around thedelivery roll.
In-using'my improved device the previously prepared spirally wound package roll 17 is placed upon the pin 18, the end of the paper strip a is then unwound from this roll and passed over the outer face of the delivery roll 20 and up between its face and that of the guide roll 21.
The front plate 11 is then swung down on its hinge into the position illustrated in Fig. 1 where it is locked to the post 19 by the latch hook 32.
Now by pushing the said roller forward iii over the surface. the paper strip and the attached film will. be unwound from the package roll so that the film carried on the strip will be upon the outside surface of the roller and so be deposited upon the surface to be decorated.
The package roll is held from rotating too freely by means of a friction finger which is adapted to be adjusted by the thumb screw.
In the practical. operation of a device of this character it is found necessary to provide a delivery roll 20 with a hard or nonyielding surface, as a'roll having such a surface when properly handled will deposit the gold leaf more accurately, evenly and with less wrinkles than is possible with a roll whose surface is of a yielding nature.
In order to pass the backing strip with its surface of gold leaf around this delivery roll, hold the same in position, and maintain the required tension on the strip, it is found necessary to provide a guide roll having a yielding surface which is adapted to grip the used backing strip between it and the delivery roll and to mount this guide roll on a yieldable arm whereby the required tension may be accurately obtained to permit the delivery roll to rotate freely and yet cause the guide roll to rotate positively in unison with it.
This construction is quite essential for the proper working of the device for the reason that if these rolls did not work properly together the strip would either become slack and the leaf laid in wrinkles, or the delivery roll would be held so tightly that it would not rotate, but would slide on the surface to be ornamented without delivering the leaf.
By the provision of the guide plate 28 the used strip is guided or directed to the rear of the tool and is thus disposed of as fast as used, which provision is found in practice to be of great advantage over the hand tool which winds up or otherwise stores the waste strip, for the following reasons: First, the tool is lighter to handle as no surplus or waste material is carried thereon;
second, the package roll member may be of very large size as it is not necessary to provide room for the relatively large amount of waste, and third, by this construction the strip is passed but once over the working surface of the delivery roll, which surface is thus always uniform which is not the case where the strip is wound upon this roll as fast as used. c
I have described one illustrative embodiment of my invention but I desire it understood that although specific terms are employed they are used in a generic and descriptive sense andnot for the purpose of limitation, the scope of the invention being set forth in the following claims.
I claim:
1. In a hand tool for applying metallic films, a support for a package roll comprising a film and backing, a delivery roll, a guide roll yieldingly contacting with said delivery roll and a guide above said guide roll' directing the used strip dowmmrdly from said rolls to the rear and clear of the tool.
2. In a hand tool for applying metallic films, a support for a package'roll comprising a film and backing, a delivery roll, a guide roll yieldingly contacting with said delivery roll and a guide plate above said guide roll directing the used strip downwardly from said rolls to the rear and clear of the tool. 4
3. A hand tool for applying metallic films comprising side plates holding a package roll and a delivery roll, a guide roll yieldingly held against said delivery roll and a guide plate forming the bottom of said casing and serving to direct the used strip downwardly from said rolls to the rear and clear of the tool.
