GEORGE WOOD, OF KANSAS CITY, MISSOURI.
FASTENING DEVICE.
Application filed January 31, 1917.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Gnorsn Woon, a citizen of the United States, residing at Kansas City, in the county of Jackson. and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fastening Devices, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to fastening devices, and one object is to produce a comparatively simple and inexpensive device of this character which may be employed for a large variety of purposes, such for instance, as a package tie, a hand vise, a clamp, a buckle, etc., by making slight modifications in the construction of the device whereby it is readily adapted to such purposes.
In order that the invention may be fully understood, reference will now be made to the accompanying drawing, in which:
Figurel is a plan view of the preferred form of device arranged as a package tie.
Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section of the device. 7
Fig. 3 is a cross section on line IIIIII of Fig. 2.
Fig. 4 is a modified form of the device ar; ranged as a package tie.
Fig. 5 is a modified form of the device arranged as a hand vise.
Fig. 6 is a longitudinal section of modified form arranged as a clamp to hold the edge of an article.
Fig. 7 is a front elevation of the device disclosed by Fig. 6.
Fig. 8 is a plan view of a rolling jaw and a plate, constituting parts of the device dis closed by Figs. 6 and 7.
Fig. 9 is a longitudinal section of modified form arranged as a buckle embodying two rolling aws.
Fig. 10 is a broken plan view of a modified form of package tie embodying two rolling jaws instead of one, as disclosed by Fig. 1.
Referring now more particularly to the form disclosed by Figs. 1 to 3, inclusive, 1 designates a hollow body of tubular form reduced at its rear terminal 2 to retain the knotted end A ofa cord B, adapted to be used in tying uppackages, etc. Said cord B and its knotted end A are introduced in the rear portion of the body 1 through a hole Specification of Letters Patent.

with said stationary jaw 5 in holding the free end of the cord B, as disclosed bv Fig. 2. The free end of said cord B is intro duced between the jaws 5 and 6 through an oblique slot 8, paralleling the jaw 5 and communicating at its fm'ward end with a notch 9 provided in the bottom of the body 1 to act as a guide for the cord B when introducing it into said slot 8.
The rolling jaw 6 is yieldingly-held in forward position against the stationary jaw 5, by a plunger 10 slidably mounted in the body 1 and normally held in forward position by a coil spring 11 interposed between the rear end of said plunger 10 and an interior abutment 12 formed in the rear portion of the body 1 by peripherally grooving the same, as indicated at 13.
As disclosed by Fig. 2, the stationary jaw 5 converges toward the opposite side 15 of the body 1 and thus prevents the rolling" jaw 6 from passing forwardly out of said body 1. Said rolling jaw 6 is also operably held in place by the overlapping jaw 5 and the rear wall 16 of the body 1, the radii of the inner surfaces of which are equal to the radius of the jaw 6 as disclosed by Fig. 3. This formation of said inner surfaces prevents the cord B from slipping between the rolling jaw 6 and the rear wall 16 of the body 1, the object being to retain said cord in position between the jaws 5 and 6, where an outward pull thereon in the direction of an arrow a, Fig. 2, only wedges it more firmly between said jaws 5 and 6. The inner surface 17 of the longitudinal margin 18 of the stationary jaw 5, is curved outwardly slightly to allow the withdrawal of the cord when pulled inwardly in a direction opposite to the arrow a and upwardly out of the slot 8.
In practice, when the device is employed in tying up a package, the cord B is firmly bound about such package and its free end is then inserted in the notch 9 and drawn inwardly against the rolling jaw 6. As the cord is drawn inwardly it is also pulled downwardly through the slot 8, which operation forces the rolling jaw 6 backward against the action of the spring 11 and permits the cord to pass into position between said rolling jaw 6 and the stationary jaw The cord 1s then released and any outward pull thereon in the direction of the arrow at l is resisted by the jaws 5 and 6, the latter of which is forced toward the former and firmly into contact with the cord by the wall 15 of the body 1 and the plunger 10.
In the modified form disclosed by Fig. 4, the construction is similar to that of the preferred form, except the body 1 is provided at each end with a stationary jaw 5 and a rolling jaw 6 for holding the free ends of the cord B, which is not permanently attached to the body 1 as in the preferred form. In practice after the cord B has been bound about a package, its free ends are inserted through the slots 8 and drawn inwardly between the jaws 5 and 6 in opposite directions, as disclosed by the arrows 6, until the cord is drawn taut about the package, the jaws firmly holding the ends from slipping backwardly and permitting the cord to become loose.
In the modified form disclosed by Fig. 5, the device is arranged in the form of a hand vise for holding a wire B or other article. The body 1" is provided with a stationary jaw 5 and a rolling j a v 6 an oblique slot 8", being provided for the introduction of the article B between said jaws. A handle D is secured to the rear end of the body 1 to form a convenient gripping surface when manipulating the device.
In the modified form disclosed by Figs. 6 to 8, inclusive, the device is adapted for gripping the edges of comparatively wide articles, such, for instance, as indicated at B The rolling jaw 6 is in the form of an elongated roller, as disclosed by Fig. 8, instead of a ball as disclosed by the preferred form. Said rolling jaw 6 is forced firmly into engagement with the article 13 by an inclined wall 15 converging at its forward end toward a stationary jaw 5 on the bottom of the body 1. A fiat plate 21 with a slot 22 to receive the rolling aw 6 is employed to force said jaw in and out of contact with the inclined wall 15. In Fig. 6, the rolling jaw 6 is shown loosely engaging the article B but by pressing forwardly upon the rearwardly projecting end of the plate 21, said jaw 6 is carried into contact with the inclined wall 15 and also made to firmly engage the article B which cannot be drawn from between the jaws 5 and 6", owing to the fact that any outward pull upon said article B results in the rolling jaw 6 being forced downward more firmly into engagement with said article by the inclined wall 15. To release the jaw (3 from the article 13 to allow withdrawal of the latter from the device, it is only necessary to press against the forward end of the plate 21 and restore it to its original position disclosed by Fig. 6. Longitudinal movement of the plate 21 is limited by a screw 24: and a slot 25. The screw 24 also holds the plate 21 above the stationary jaw 5, to allow one edge of the article to he slipped into position between said plate 21 and the jaw 5. The body 1 and the jaw 5 are reinforced with longitudinal ribs 26, to prevent their forward ends 27' from spreading apart.
The modified form disclosed by Fig. 9, is intended more particularly for holding strips of material and be substituted to advantage for various kinds of buckles. The device comprises a'body 1 with a stationary jaw ,5 and two rolling jaws 6 which coact in gripping the article B with which they are forced into engagement by the oppositely converging walls 15 and 15 at the upper portion of said body 1. The rolling jaws 6 are held in proper relation to each other by a slotted plate 21 movably mounted in the body l wherein it is held by two screws 241 extending through slots 25" in the upper wall of the body 1 When the rolling jaws 6 are in the central or neutral position disclosed by Fig. 9, the article H, which is attached at one end to the body 1, can be slipped freely through said body in either direction, but when the rolling jaws are adjusted into contact with the inclined walls 15 the article is prevented from slipping through the body lwinithe direction of the arrow 0. WVhen the rolling jaws 6 are adjusted into engagement with the inclined walls 15 they prevent the article B from bping drawn through the body 1 in a direction opposite to the arrow 0.
In the modified form disclosed by Fig; 10, the device is somewhat similar to the preferred form, except that two rolling jaws 6 are employed instead of but one rolling jaw.
One of said rolling jaws is of less diameter than the other, so that one of its sides like a side of the larger jaw may coact with the stationary jaw 5 in securing articles in place.
From the foregoing description, it is apparent that I have produced a simple ,and reliable device whereby packages and. other articles can be conveniently and quickly fastened without the possibility of the fastening device becoming accidentally loosened. It is also apparent that I have produced a device which is practically indestructible, which is simple in construction, reliable and efiicient in operation, strong, inexpensive to manufacture.
Having thus described my invention, what durable, and
I claim and desire to secure by Letters Pat- 7 and engageable with the respective jaws, and
screws engaged in the respective slots of said slotted wall and having their heads engaged with the outer face of said jaw-carrying wall and having their ends threaded into said plate to guide the plate for sliding movement and for holding same spaced from the wall which opposes the aw-carrying wall.
2. A fastening device including a body having spaced walls one of which has an inclined jaw facing the other wall, a slotted plate slidable between the walls, a roller movable transversely of and through the slot of the plate and engageable with said jaw, and means to guide the plate for sliding movement and for holding same spaced from the wall which opposes the jaw-carrying wall said slot of the plate being formed so that the roller will project beyond the plate to grip the article to be fastened.
3. A fastening device including a body having spaced walls one of which has an inclined jaw facing the other wall, a plate between the walls, means to mount the plate to allow same to slide and to hold same in spaced relation to the said other Wall, a rolling article gripper, and means to mount the gripper so that same partakes of the movements of said plate and to allow same to engage said inclined jaw and the article.
In testimony whereof I aiiiX my signature, in the presence of two witnesses.
