COMBINED SHIPPING AND DISPLAY CASE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 31, 1917.
Application filed September 13, 1916. Serial No. 119,990.
To all whom it may concern.'
Be it known that I, PAUL M. Komme, a citizen of the United States, residing at Atascadero, in the county of San Luis Obispo and State of California, have invented a new and useful Combined Shipping and Display Oase, of which the following is a specification.
This invention is designed to rovide a shipping case for the use of see en and other dealers in goods that are put up in more or less uniform ackets such as for instance packets of gar en and i'iower seeds, and an object of the invention is to provide a shipping oase for suoli packets, in which the packets may be packed when the case is open and in which they may be inclosed for transportation and may afterward be exhibited in a manner attractive to the customer and convenient for the dealer when the case has again been opened.
The invention comprises a hollow base having a slotted side and a slotted cover,
ythe slots of which register with each other,
an adjustable section or tray pivoted to said base and adapted to be brought into various angular relations to the top of the base and provided with receptacles open on one side and adapted to form separate display containers, and in carrying out the invention I have constructed said tray with slot-ted partitions arranged parallel to the base and with partition slats extending through the slots of the slotted partitions and extending into or working in slots in the top and in the rear wall of the base. I have also pivoted the slotted partitions in the adjustable section so that they may be adjusted to different angular relations to the base and to the walls of the adjustable section.
The adjustable section is also provided with means whereby it may be supported aslant relative to the base when the case y is open and adjusted to favorably display Figure 1 is a perspective view of the combined shipping and display case in display position, the cover being omitted.
Fig. 2 is a sectional elevation of the case as shown in Fig. 1. Line .r2-w3, Fig. l, indicates the line of section.
Fig. 3 is a section of the closed shipping case on line {c2-:03, Fig. Il.
Fig. 11 is a section on line mt, Fig. 3.
Fig. 5 is a fragmental sectional detail analogous to Fig. 1 showing a concealed pivot arrangement.
Arrows on the section lines indicate the direction of sight in the sectional views indicated by such lines.
The base 1 may be constructed of boards, shocks or anyother firm strong sheet material adapted for making boxes and cabinets and comprises a bottom 9., front wall 3, slotted rear wall 4, end walls 5, cleats 6 on said end walls, a movable base top 7 mounted on said cleats and flush with the top of the four walls of the base. The rear wall 4 and the top 7 are Provided with registering Slat-receiving slots 8, 9. A tray 10 comprising a bottom 11, side walls 12, end wall 13 and slotted partitions la is mounted outside of the base, and is pivoted by pivots 15 to the end walls 5 of the base; the side walls 12 of the tray being spaced apart and extended beyond the tray bottom 11 to embrace the end walls of the base. The extensions 16 of the sides of the tray are pivoted to the end walls 5 of the base by pivots 15 which may be screws axially alined and connecting the base and the side extensions of the tray. By inserting the screws so that their heads 17 are on the inner side of the base, as in Fig. `5, the pivots are concealed from view.
The tray is provided with partitions 14e arranged parallel to the pivot axis and fastened to the side walls of the tray by means of pivots 1S which are arranged co-axially with each other and parallel to the base so that the partitions may be brought into different angular positions relative to the bottom 11 of the tray. A removable cover 19 is fitted to the top of the base and tray when said base and tray are extended in fiat position. The bottom 11 of the tray abuts against the rear wall 4 of the base when the tray and base are extended in the same plane, and means as indicated by the screws 2O are provided to hold the 'cover 19 on the base and tray, thus to hold base and tra.;T in rigid relation to each other to const'tui a shipping case.
rhe transverse partitions 1l are provided with slot-s 21 `alined with the slots 8 and 9. Slats Q2 fastened by any suitable means as tacks Q3 driven through flanges 2l into end Wall 13 of the tray. extend through the slots 21, and through slots 8 and 9. lSaid slot-ted partitions extend betvveen the side Walls of the trayT and are in pivotal relation to the base and to the tray side Walls 12, so thaA when the cover 19 is removed the tra-y can be raised to a slanting position and the partitions 1d may be adjusted to dinerent anglee and inclinations to hold the packets in a desired position for display.
Y The base is hollow and the base top 7 is loose and easily removed so that a reserve store oi seed pacrets or other goods may be contained therein and concealed While Vthe other packets are displayed.
Supporting: means as the brace or prop 25 having a pivot Q5 temporarily engaged With the bottom 11 by suitable means as the screw eye 26, is provided to support the tray aslant as shown in Fig. 2.
The ends of the extensions 1G are oblique to the edges thereof and the lower corner 16 thereof is near to the pivot 1o so that said corner vvill escape aniv7 dat surface oi the support upon which the case may stand, thus allowing the tray to be elevated to slanting position. The tips 16" ot said ein tensions are adapted to impinge upon such supporting surface when the tray is thus aslant so that the brace Q5 may meet hrm resistance and the display case thus be drin and rigid When in the position shown in Fig. 2.
The tips 16" and the foot ot the prop 25 cooperate as a tripod to give stable support to the tra;7 on a dat surface or on an irregir lar surface that mayT be practicable as support for the case and said foot magVT be Vmade more or less pointed as may be deemed de sirable.
A vacant chamber QSis provided aboveV the bottom 11 and between the loivi."1 1iartition le and the rear ivall d oi the hase to receive the brace Q5 when the case is packed and` before the cover is applied.
The slats 22 are narrower than the slots 21 so as to allovv the partitions 14e to roclr on the pivots.
i stop 27 is red to the end ot the bottom 11 and serves to reinforce said. end where it abuts against the end vvall `t ot the base.
ln practical use the traiVT ivill be pached With the goods While in the fiat position shown in Figs. :3 and 11, the cover 19 and the base top 7 being removed. rilien the brace 25 Will be stored in the chamber 28 and the top 7 and the cover 19 will be applied and '1 the cover fastened in place by the screws 2 a removable cover rpor the tray and base,`
and means to detachablyl fasten the cover in place to hold the trayv and base in rigid relation to each othenf ln a displayr case the combination vvith a base, of a tray'pivoted to the base outsideV thereof and extending therefrom, a cover, and means to detachably tasten the cover in closing position on the base and trav 3. A combined shipping and display case comprising a base, a. tra;T pivoted to the base and provided ivith partitionsarranged parallel to the pivot axis, cover means adapted to nt on the trag7 and base to hold them in rigid relation to each other, and nreans to tasten said cover means on said trav and base.V
