Description

GEORGE D STEVENS.
Improvement in Bracelets.
No.'123,740 Pa-tented Feb. 13, 1872.
UNITED STATES GEORGE D. STEVENS,
PATENT OFFICE.
OF NEW YORK, N. Y. I
IMPROVEMENT IN BRACELETS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 123,740, dated February 13, 1872. I
. in Bracelets; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable those skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing forming part of this specification, in which drawing Figure 1 represents a sectional front view of my invention. Fig. 2 is a side view of the same.
Similar letters indicate corresponding parts.
This invention consists in the arrangement of a slot in the thumb-piece of the snap of a bracelet forthe reception of a tassel or other ornament; said slot is provided with a central recess, and if the ring, which forms the connection between the thumb-piece and the ornament, is moved opposite to said recess the thumb-piece can be depressed and the bracelet opens; bnt as long as the ring occupies a position in the slot not opposite to said recess it forms a stop, preventing the snap from bein g opened and guarding against the accidental disengagement of the bracelet.
Inthe drawing, the letterA designatesabracelet, which is closed by a snap, a. On this snap is secured a thumb-piece, b, and by depressing this thumb-piece the snap is disengaged and the bracelet can be opened. In the thumbpiece I) I have provided a slot, 0, for the reception of a ring, (1, forming part of a tassel or other ornament, whereby the appearance of the bracelet is materially improved. The slot 0 is provided with'a recess, 0, and as long as the ring d occupies a position not opposite to this recess'for instance, such as shown in Fig. 1 of the drawing-the thumb-piece can not be depressed and the bracelet cannot be opened; but if the ring dis moved opposite to the recess e the thumb-piece can be depressed and the bracelet can be opened.
If the bracelet is; applied to the arm the weight of the tassel or other ornament attached to the ring cl has a tendency to keep the same in the position shown in the drawing, where it forms a stop, preventing the thumb-piece from being depressed, and, consequently, guarding against the loss of the bracelet. Before the bracelet can be opened the ring 01 must be moved opposite to or in the recess 6, and it is hardly probable that the ring will be accidentally thrown in that position, while at the same instant the thumb-piece is depressed so as to release the bracelet and allow it to disengage itself.
I am aware that looking devices have been combined with the snap of a bracelet-such, for instance, as those described in the patents No..120,535, October 31,1871, and No. 89,037, April 20, 1869and I do not claim broadly, therefore, the combination of any locking device with the snap of a bracelet.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The arrc ngement of a slot, 0, in the thumbpiece of the snap of a bracelet, for the reception of a tassel or other ornament, substantially as set forth.
2. The slotted thumb-piece b, provided with a recess, a, in combination with the ring d and with the snap of a bracelet, substantially as shown and described.
