INVENTOR l Ammer DANIEL IVI. LYNN, OF GLINTONVILLE, PENNSYLVANIA.
GAS-RELIEF VALVE FOR OIL-WELLS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug'. 28, 1917.
Application led January 14, 1916. Serial No. 72,132.
To all rwhom t may concern:
Be it known that I, DANIEL M, LYNN,` citizen of the United States, residing at Clintonville, in the county of Venango and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gas-Relief Valves for Oil-Wells, of which the following is a specification.
The object, construction and utility of this invention are herein set forth with sufcient clearness, to enable those skilled in the art of oil production, to make and use the same.
The obj ect of this invention is to simplify the equipment of oil wells, and reduce the cost of such equipment by eliminating the gas pipe through which gas is conducted from the inclosed chamber of the well, beneath the packer, where the oil production of the well gathers.
In nearly all oil wells a wall-packer is used, which is located above the oil-producing stratum, for the purpose of preventingl water from passing downward from the higher, water-producing strata, into the lower oil-producing stratum. Where a well is equipped with such wall-packer, it is necessary to provide a gas-escape passage through the packer, for the escape of gas therethrough.
This invention provides a gas-relief valve, whereby the gas in the oil chamber of the well is permitted to pass into, and escape through the oil-tubing of the well, thus dispensing with the usual gas escape passage through the packer and the pipe connected therewith, and in this respect, and to such extent, the equipment of the well is simplified and reduced in cost.
I am aware that certain packers for oil wells have been invented which contain valves that are adapted to permit the escape of gas from the oil chamber of the well into the tubing, such a packer being shown in Letters Patent of the United States to Griffin, No. 1,149,751, dated Aug. 10, 1915, and in Letters Patent of the United States to McNallen, No. 1,164,655, dated Dec. 21, 1915. Inasrnuch, however, as the valves shown in said patents are not independent of the packer, but are a structural part thereof, and cannot be employed independently of the packer, as can my valve, I hereby speciically disclaim such construction: My valve may be interposed directly in the tubing and em.
arranged to be connected to the lower end of a wallpacker 2. The lower end of said body 1 is adapted for the attachment of the tubing 3, which extends downward into the fluid 4 in the well, and the lower end of which tubing usually rests upon the bottom of the hole.
Leading from the duct in body 1, is a lateral, vertically-extending branch duct 5, which is provided with a downwardly-disposed opening, into which is inserted a valve-seat 6, with which a suitable valve, as 7 coperates.
As the well is pumped, the fluid production of the well passes up through said tubing 3, and when the pressure of gas in the fluid cavity 8 beneath the packer becomes sufficiently high, it unseats said valve 7 and passes into said lateral branch 5, thence into the tubing 3, through which it escapes from the well.
It is necessary to the proper working of the valve that it be positioned above the fluid 4 in the oil-chamber 8 of the well, but it may be positioned anywhere above the surface of the fluid and below the wall-packer 2, or such equivalent of said packer as may be employed.
I claim the following:
1. The combination with the tubing of a well having a wall-packer connected thereto, of a gas-escape valve connected to said tubing, positioned intermediate said packer and the fluid of the well and adapted for the escape of gas from the well through said tubing; said valve comprising a suitable body having a valve-closed opening for the entrance of gas thereinto and into the tubtioned intermediate said packer and the fluid ing to Which said Valve is connected. of the Well which is beneath said packer.
2. The combination With the tubing of a In testimony whereof- I aiiiX my signature Well and the Wall-packer connected to such in presence of two Witnesses.

such tubing, and adapted for the escape of Witnesses: gas from the oil-chamber of such Well E. R. INMAN, through said tubing, said Valvey being posi- M. R. HENDERSON.
Copies of this patent may be obtained for ve cents each, by addressing the Commissioner of E'atents, Washington, D. G.
