Be it known that I, THOMAS CLoov'As, subject of the King of Greece, residing at York- Ville, in the county of Jefferson and State of Ohio, have invented new and useful Im- .provements in Cigarette-Dispensing Boxes, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to pocket cigarette cases and 'has for its object to provide a device of this character with means for partly projecting the cigarettes, successively, through a-suitable opening in the casing, whereby the same may be Withdrawn without the necessity of opening the casing.

A further object of the invention is to produce a device of this character which shall be of a simple construction, comparatively.

cheap to manufacture, easily operated, and positive in its operation.

The case 1, while preferably constructed of metal, may be constructed of any other suitable material, and comprises a hollow open face structure, constituting a back 2, sides '3, a top 4, and a bottom 5. The sides, the top and the bottom are each of a similar width, I

and formed upon the top, and partly closing the openv face of the casing is a compartment 6, the same extending the entire width of the case, and the outer face or plate of the said compartment projecting a suitable distance therebelow, and having arranged thereon, a suitable catch 7 that is designed to engage with the closure 8 which is hingedly secured, as at 9, at the bottom of the case, when the said cover is brought to closing position.

Within the compartment 6, and approximately central thereof, is j ournaled atoothed wheel 10, the said wheel having its teeth engaged'by rack bars 11 and 12 respectively. Both of these bars are mounted for slidable movement in suitable guide means 13 and 14 respectively, the rack bar 11, which is at the upper end of the compartment having secured to, what I will term its outer end,

a link 15,'the said link passing through a' suitable opening in one of the sides of the case. The'link is loosely secured, as at 17 to a lever 18, the said lever being pivoted as at 19 in a suitable recess portion 20, upon the referred to side of the casing. The lever -18, at a suitable distance beyond its pivot has formed thereon an enlargement in the nature of a disk 21, and thenumeral 22 designates a flat spring which has its free end secured to a partition 23 in the casing, the said partition forming the rear wall of what I have termed the recess 20. The sprlng normally swings the lever 18 outward of the case, moving the rack bar 11 toward what I will term the front side, indicated by the numeral 24:, of the casing, and which movement, turning the toothed wheel 10 will cause the rack bar 11 to be moved in the direction of the rear side of the casing. The inner wall of the compartment 6 is provided with an elongated slot 25, extending from the rear wall of the case, forward a suitable distance therefrom, and the rack bar is pro vided with an angular finger 26 which is designed to pass through the said slot 25, the end of the finger being provided with an nlargement or disk 27. The disk is normally arranged opposite one of the ends of the uppermost cigarette and is designed to contact with the said end of the said cigarette to movethe same through an opening 28 in the side 24 of the casing, when the rack bars are actuated.

Arranged within the case 1 is a trough shaped member 29 that is supported by the upper or outer links or arms 30 of a toggle lever system 31. The links or arms of the system are formed from fiat bars which have their confronting edges, at the center thereof, I provided with substantially rectangular cut away or depressed portions 82,

' therethrough, and in these openings arereceived the pintles 34 for centrally connecting the links. The opposite ends of the intermediate links are slotted and'bent upon themselves to provide barrels 35 and passing through these barrels is a pivot 36. The lower links have their ends provided with hook shaped extensions 37' and connected to the said hooks are the ends of a comparatively light convolute spring 38, which has a tendency to swing the other, and consequently extend the toggle system. I

The hooked ends of the lower links of the toggle system are received in elongated slots 39, in a base, and the said slots may-be protected by a suitable casing, if desired, while the spring 38, being arranged exteriorly of the case is protected bya suitable housing 40. v i

The trough 29, when all of the cigarettes have'been removed from the case is adapted to be held against the bottom of the case, when the toggle-lever'system is retracted, throughthe medium of a suitable catch 41,

and when this catch is released, after the filling of the case, the spring 38 will have a tendency to expand the toggle system, and

consequently force the trough, in which the lowermost cigarette is arranged, upwardly or toward the compartmentfi, bringing one of the cigarettes directly opposite the open: ing 28 and one of the ends of the said cigarette in the path of contact with the element 27' of the ejector mechanism. Having thus described the invention, what I claim 1s:

l. A cigarette case having an openingin i one of the sides thereof, a spring influenced toggle lever system in the case, a trough car ried by said system designed to arrange a cigarette opposite the opening, a housing in the case outward ofthe opening, a toothed wheel in the housing, oppositely arranged rack bars engaged by the wheel, an offset element upon one of the rack barsdisposed in a slot in the housing contact with the end of the cigarette, and means, including a spring pressed lever connected with the other rack bar whereby, when actuated, to slide the said rackbar in one direction to turn the toothed wheel to cause the other rack bar to move in another direction to partially project the cigarette. through the opening in the case.

2. A cigarette case having anopening in one of the sides thereof, a tr'ough'in the case and designed to receive a cigarette, spring pressed means for normally forcing the trough in the direction of the opening, whereby to arrange the cigarette opposite the opening, a housing above the toothed wheel in the housing, oppositely disposed rack bars engaged by the toothed wheel, a slot in-the lower wall of the housing, an extension upon the end of the rack bar disposed opposite the slot and passing through the said slot, whereby the same is arranged in the path of contact with the end of the ci arette, a link connected with the other'rac bar, a spring influenced pivoted lever connected with the link and with the case and a finger piece upon said lever.
