Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 11, 1911..
Application filed February 26, 1916- Serial No. 801,567.
The use of packages of sheet material for cigars where the packages are of the usual type, is difiicult because of the inability to remove the cover, the thin edges of which are liable to cut the hands of the user, and if battered, do not allow the package to be readily closed.
This invention relates to a receptacle for tobacco, cigars or other goods wherein the package is repeatedly opened for withdrawal of the contents, the whole being so designed as to afiord ready access to the interior without difficulty on the part of the operator, and to render the contents of the box extremely accessible so that a part can be withdrawn without disturbing the balance.
The invention consists in the matters hereinafter set forth and more particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
In the drawings,
Figure 1 is a view of the receptacle that embodies the invention, in partially open position;
Fig. 2 is a view in longitudinal section therethrough with the parts closed;
Fig. 3 is a view in detail of a retaining snap; I I
Fig.4 is a view in detail of a hinged pivot;
Fig. 5 is aview in cross sectional detail of a hinged pivot. I
Fig. 6 is a view in longitudinal section of a modification of the invention;
Fig. 7 is a view of the inner receptacle provided with an inclined base;
Fig. 8 is a view in detail taken on or about line Vl[TVl[T of Fig. 7
Figs. 9 and 10 are views in detail of a false bottom construction; and
Fi 11 is a view showing a method of opening the package.
Referring to the drawings, an outer casin is formed of sheet metal or similar materia preferably with integral side walls 1 and back 2 and a top 3 that may have double lock scams or other suitable joints with the margins of the sides and backs. body having a front wall 5 and side walls 6 that are preferably integral with the front wall and an inset bottom piece 7 is dimensioned to telescope into the outer casing 1 and is pivotally connected thereto at the lower outer corners by suitable pintles or the like. These may be simply rivets as indicated in Figs. 1
from the inner body and passed through a suitable opening 10 in the wall 1. The upper margin 11 of each side wall is cut away as indicated to afford clearance when the device swings forward, and a projection 12 on and 2 at 8, or a tongue 9 may be struck out L the upper outer corner of each side wall '6 is snapped into a corresponding boss 13 in the casing wall. Preferably also the top 3 is indented or depressed at its outer margin as indicated at 14: to afi'ord a finger hold on the upper margin of the front wall 5 whereby the body maybe tilted readily forward.
lff desired, the body may be formed as indicated in Fig. 6 with an inner side wall It and in such construction a depending front flange 15 of the outer case cover may be used as a stop.
Or as indicated in Fig. 7 there may bean inclined base 16 corresponding to the angle of the upper margin 17 and have depending flanges 18 with bosses 19 thereon that snap in corresponding bosses 20 of the wall.
If preferred, there may be a false bottom 21 of fiber board or the like secured between oppositely disposed, inwardly bent the package stands.
In Figs. 8 and 11 a finger hole 24 is shown, whereby the user, by grasping the package between the thumb and second finger, may readily tilt the body outwardly by inserting the index finger in the hole.
As a result of this construction, a receptacle is provided in which the goods are closely housed when the package is closed,
and from which the contents can be taken readily, there being no cover to become displaced or marred while the operators hands are not injured. Because of the peculiar shape of the tilting body, the entire contents thereof is available and any portion of it may be removed without injury to the other.
Obviously, changes in the details of construction may be made without departing from the spirit of the invention and I do not care to limit myself to any particular form or arrangement of parts.
What I claim is:
1. A vending package comprising an outer casing of sheet material having parallel side walls and a top wall, a receptacle telescoping in the casing with which it conforms and swinging at the lower outer corners thereof on pivoted connection with the casing side walls, the lower margins of the receptacle being interrupted to form inwardly bent alternately arranged tongues, a bottom plate secured at its marghl between the tongues and a false bottom plate supported between the walls of the'receptacle at an interval above the bottom plate.
2. A vending package comprising an outer casing of sheet material having side and top walls, a receptacle telescoping in the casing with which it conforms and swinging at the lower outer corners thereof on pivotal connections with the side walls, the lower margins of the receptacle being intercepted to form inwardly bent, alternately arranged tongues, a bottom plate secured at its margin between the tongues, and bosses formed on the side walls of the casing that engage bosses on the walls of the receptacle at an interval above the bottom plate.
3. A vending package comprising an outer, substantially rectangular, sheet material casing having side and top Walls, a receptacle telescoping into the casing and swinging on pivotal connections with the casing side walls, the front wall of the receptacle forming the casing front wall when the receptacle is upright, and a false bottom at an interval above the lower end of the receptacle having lateral extensions that are in engagement with complemental parts on the casing side walls.
Intestimony whereof I afiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
