Application filed March29, 1916. seria n sassa. g
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HARRY S. WILLIAws, a citizen of the United States, residing at Springfield, in the county of Clark and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cutting-Tools, of
which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in cutting tools particularly adapted for trimming wall paper.
An object of the invention is to simplify and cheapen the construction of tools of this character and to make more efiective the operation thereof.
A further and more particular object of the invention is to improve the construction of the cutting element proper by providing a cutting blade which may be more cheaply renewed and in which rotating parts are eliminated so as to reduce wear.
In the accompanying drawings Figure 1 is a side elevation of a tool embodying my improvements.
Fig. 2 is an end elevation of the same.
Fig. 3 is a top plan View.
Fig. 4 is a side elevation.
Fig. 5 is a section on the line 55 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 6 is a section on the line.66 of Fig. 3, the straight edge, however, being omitted.
Referring to the drawings, 1 represents the bottom of a carriage or gage piece, the under side of which is provided with the usual grooved projections 2 which receive the overhanging metallic strip 3 of the straight edge 4, and also with the downwardly projecting lips 5 which engage the side of the straight edge; this being the usual and well known construction in tools of this character. The bottom portion 1 is provided with an upwardly extending rounded block 6 which is provided with a vertically extending Tshaped guideway 7 into which leads a slotted opening 8.
Slidably connected with the carriage thus formed is a tool carrying head 9 which is in the nature of a housing w thin which is secured the cutting blade. In the present case this blade, which is in the nature of a fiat strip of steel 10 is secured toa block 11 by a screw 12 as shown in Fig.6; a reinforcing strip 13 being preferably secured to the blade by spot welding, soldering or otherwise. The block 11 is fastened to the head in a way ,tobe readily removable, In the present case,
claim r I- loyed a screw 14 which extends through the upper portion of the head 9 into an extension 1190f the block 11 and a'screw 15 also extends through the block 11, blade 10 and its plate 13 upon the inner end of which is threaded a sleeve 16 which fits snugly but removably. into the hollow boss 17, thus not only assisting the screw 14 to firmly secure the block 11 to the head 9 but also more firmly clamping the blade to the block. The block 11 is of a shape .to fit the T-shaped groove in the part 6 so as to slidably connect it therewith, the carriage being also provided with vertically arranged beveled ribs, as indicated at 18, to inclose the beveled side of the head to further assist the guiding action of the block. A spring 19 i inserted between the under side of the block 11 and the bottom of the groove 7' so wardly; a screw 20 secured to the block 11 and extending through the slot 8 acting as a I stop.
In operation the tool is placed upon the straight edge and the operator may then by hooking his forefinger under the boss 17 and pressing down upon the head 9 atthe thumb place 9*, force the blade 10 in contact with the paper to be cut and slide the tool along the straight edge. I-Ieretofore in tools of this ting blade from wear on the cutting edge thereof, this can be done much more cheaply, since the cost between the two types is quite material. By reason of the peculiar shape of the cutting edge of the blade 10, which is curved upwardly in a forward direction, I am enabled to obtain in effect a draw out which is much more effective in its severing operation than the action of therotating' disk.
Having thus described my invention, I
1. In acutting tool, a carriage arranged to slide along a straight edge, a head slide a removable non-rotatable cutting blade con-. nected With said block, the cutting edge of nected with said block. Said blade being curved upwardly in a direo- 19 2. In a cutting tool, a carriage arranged to tion of travel of said tool.
slide along a straight edge,-a head slidably In testimony whereof, I have hereunto set connected with said carriage, a block removmy hand this 20th day of March, 1916.
ably secured to said head also having a slid- HARRY S. WILLIAMS. able connection with said carriage, and a rel/Vitness: movable non-rotatable cutting blade con- CHAs. I. WELCH.
