When the forward end of runner D, is thrown up as in Fig. 2, the hind axletree C, slides back a little; when the forward end of the runner is thrown down, the aXletree moves correspondingly forward. In this manner `I construct adouble runner` sleigh having greater fleXibility in all its parts, yet of less weight, but more proportionate strength, than any vehicles of the kind ever before made. The cost of construction, in proportion to weight and size, is less, for my improvement than the ordinary sleigh.
"The fiexibility of my sleigh destroys none of its strength, it being capable of sustaining a given burden with equal `firmness, whether running over a smooth` or rough road. Its great fiexibility andfreedom from racking also relevesit from sudden arrng or thumping motions, rendering it much `more agreeable as a passenger vehicle, than the ordinary sleighs. i v
