Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES J, TROPPMAN, of the city of Chicago, county of Cook, and State of Illinois, have invented certain Improvements in Aviators Goggles, of which the following is a specification.
My present invention relates to goggles or eye-protectors, and more particularly to devices of this character that areadapted to be worn by aviators and others engaged in like pursuits where it is essential to combine dependability and compactness in articles of wearing apparel and for use in making flights. l
Among the divers objects of my invention is the provision in go gles or eye-protectors of a simple and depen able hinge connection between the oppositely disposed eye-cu s and lenses, which will afford a requisite egree of flexibility to the structure to facilitate the adjustment of the device to the face of the wearer, and will also provide facilities for the removal and insertion of new lenses, and will further permit of the folding of the lenses, face to face, when not in use in which position the lenses will be protected from breakage by the flexible eye-cups. It
is also an Ob ect to provide goggles that are so constructed. that the edges 0 the eye-cups thereof will conform to the contour of that portion of the wearefis face surrounding the eye-sockets, and are capable of being readily folded into "compact form in order to be packed in a relat vely small s ace when not in use; and a further object .o my invention is the provision of a goggle in which the lens-supporting structure is provided with means for securing)the lens in position, located adjacent the ridge so that the mounting is capable of adjustment at the inner edges of each lens in-orde'r to permit the accommodation of lenses of varying dimensions.
I prefer to attain the divers objects of my invention by substantially the "means disclosed in the accompanying drawings that form a -part of this specification, wherein;- Figure 1 is a front elevation of a pair of gog les or eye-protectors embodying my inven ion.

In the drawings I have employed similar reference characters to designate the same parts throughout the several views.
The og les comprise separate lenses 10, 10, pro era ly of the lobe or leaf type, that are each fitted into rims 11, of material such as thinmetal or any other suitable substance, that surround and conform to the' contour of the respective lenses. The ends of each rim are preferably bent laterally toward each other to provide long and short members 12, 12, so that their end edges come adjacent each other when the same are assembled, the upper member 12, being 'considerably shorter than the lower member.
Suitable upper and lower knuckles 13, are formed upon the sides of each end member 12 in vertical alinement with each other and corresponding knuckles 13, 13 are formed upon the facing edges of end members 12" all of which register, in order that one of the pintles 14 of the hinge may be passed throughsaid knuckles and through two double hinge links 15 and thereby lock each lens in its respective rim, as well as to secure the members of the hinge together in the desired manner. The links 15 are of substantially a figure 8 shape in transverse section, so that each pintle 14 passes through one of he tubes of each; and, in order to adjust t e rim to the lenses and to securely hold the parts of the hinge together, I prefer to screw-thread the lower portion of each pintle and tap the same into the lowermost of the knuckles 13, that is internally threaded to receive the same. The rims are stamped substantially M-shaped in cross-section, as shown, in order that the lenses may be conveniently held in one of the grooves thus formed and the collapsible eye-cups are carried by the opposite grooves in said rim, aswill now more fully appear. These cups are formed of a strip of thin silk gauze 16, which, after the pattern has been cut, is folded centrally upon itself and one loop 17 of a wire frame is disposed in the fold thus made, and the same snapped into its proper groove in its respective rim. A second loop 18 is made to complete the wire frame above me tioned, both of said loops (17 and- 18) con orming in plan to the contours of the lenses, the loop 17 being flat when viewed.
from its edge and the loop 18 being-shaped so as to conform to the depressions and raised portions of the face of the wearer adjacent the eye-socket. Suitable resilient means such as forming the loops 17 and 18 of the same, or of a continuous, piece of spring wire as shown in Fig. 8, so as to connect the necks or reduced. portions of these frames in order that the frames 18 may be moved toward the lens rims when the goggles are folded together and compressed into a compact area, as shown in Fig. 2, and eyelets 16 ar fastened into the gauze to pro vide ventilation for the eye-cups.
The two free edges of the gauze 16 are adapted to surround the movable loop 18 of the frame after the wire of the latter has been wrapped with a suitable filler 19 that forms a pad thereon, after which a soft tape 20 of plush, velvet or the like, is stitched around the same to secure it in place. I prefer, in. order to" provide a soft cushion against the wearers face, and to insure the exclusion of dust, smoke, or air rushing under the edge of frame 18, to attach a strip of chenille 21, or other material having long nap, such as fur or the like, to the outer surface of the tape 20, thereby completing the eye-cup of the goggle and making'a soft cushion against the wearers face.
It willbe observed that, whenever the lenses are folded together in the manner shown in Fig. 2, the same will be protected against accidental damage by the movable frames and by the padding upon said frames that. are thendisposed upon both sides of the folded goggle.
In Figs. 6 and 7, I have illustrated a slightly modified form of hinge structure wherein the end portions of the rims terminate in substantially equal length lateral members 30, that are each provided with a .single knuckle 31 adjacent their bent portions, the upper and lower knuckle of each rim alining with each other. pair of knuckles on each rim are spaced apart a distance sufficient to accommodate between them single elongated hinge link 32 also'of figure 8 cross-section and which is adapted to be assembled by the insertion of the pintles 33, through said knuckies and said links, in substantially the same manner as the other form is assembled. By these structures the lenses are retained in vertical plane of the intles and are prevented from flexing there rom.
In both forms it will be observed the ends of the rims are held together by the hinge pintles and it will also be noted that the interior edges of the lenses shown are much more irregular than the outer edges. By bringing together and joining the rims at their inner edges by the hinge pintles, differences of dimensions of lenses upon their inner edges can be easily accommodated, when a replacement of lenses is necessary.

3. A goggle comprising lenses, rims for said lenses consistin of strips of metal having knucklesprovi ed adjacent the ends of said strips, a i acting respectively with the knuckles upon each strip and said link, and flexible eyecups coactin with said rims.
