Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed December 16, 1913. Serial No. 807,023.

Be it known that I, ERNST Cum Mum.- BAUER, a citizen of the Kingdom of Saxony, German Empire, residing in Dresden- Lobtau, in the Kingdom of Saxony, in said Empire, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Machines for Applying Cork, Metal Foil, or the like at Intervals to Strips of Cigarette-Paper, of which the following is a specification.
The invention is shown in the accompanying drawing in Figures 1 and 2 in side and front elevation respectively. Fig. 3 is a detailed view showing the knife in its cutting position. Figs. 4:, 5 and 6 are detailed views showing the knife and the clamping bar 27 in three positions, namely, before the covering strip is gripped, while the covering strip is gripped and before the cutting thereof, and lastly, after the cutting and releasing of the covering strip. Fig. is .a cross section of the feed gear. Fig. 8 is a longitudinal section thereof. Fig. 9 is a top detailed view of the feed for. the cigarette paper. Fig. 10 is a top detailed View of the clamping apparatus. Fig. 11 is a detailed view of the balls or rollers in the feed gear. Fig. 12 is a view of a separate piece of the covering strip. Fig.

The toothed wheel 1 drives the toothed wheel 2 which isjournaled at 3 in the body A of the machine- On the shaft 3 of the toothed wheel is fitted a crank 4 which is coupled by screws 5 and 5 with the wheel 2 and can be displaced relatively thereto, the screw 5 passing through a slot 6. To the crank is coupled a connecting rod 7, which acts by means of a lever 8 on the driven part 9 of a free wheel feed gear shown in detail in Figs. 7 8, 11. This driven part 9 is surrounded in the manner well-known in cycle free wheels with a shell 10. Between the two parts 9 and 10 are arranged balls or rollers 11, which coact in well-known manner with bevels 12 on the driven part 9, so that when the lever 8 is rocked in the one direction (direction of the arrow in Fig. 1) the balls are gripped by the bevels 12 and the shell 10 is moved correspondingly, while when the lever 8 is rocked in the opposite 13 is a detailed topto the blade position,
direction the balls are released so that only" the driven part 9 of the gear is gripped. The space for the balls must, of course be made to correspond with the length of the longest stroke of the lever 8. In order to keep the shell 10 in its position of rest while the gear is running idle pawls 13 are provided, which bear frictionally against the shell 10 of the roller. When, at the reversed rotation the shell of the roller is gripped, the friction of the pawls 13 is overcome. The pawls'13 are pressed against the roller by means of springs 14 and a lever 15.
Over the shell 10 of the feed gear, a covering strip B coming from the stock of the reel C is conducted. This strip is made in the manner well known, and consists of the covering material per ac carried on an auxiliary strip, which serves to transport this covering material. With the shell 10 permanently coacts a roller 16, which is driven by a toothed wheel 18 on feed gear by aid of the toothed wheel 19 (Fi 2). The roller 16 is journaled in a double armed lever 21, which is constantly drawn by a spring 22 into the position, at which the roller 16 coacts with the shell 10 of the feed gear. The front end of the double armed lever 21 is made at the same time so as to act as the upper guide 23 for the covering material, which is intermittently advanced between this part 23 and the table 24. by the cooperation of the roller 16 and the shell 10.
Immediately behind the guide slot between the parts 23 and 24: is fitted the blade 25, which coacts with the edge 26 of the table 24, and severs the several pieces of covering from the strip. During such severing the covering strip is held in front of the cutting point, because the rollers 16 and 10 remain stationary during a cut. Behind the cutting point the clamping bar 27 is provided for holding the material, which bar is controlled in the well-known manner with reference 25 so that when the blade moves down the bar bears on the covering material. and holds it tight during the out.

"When the roller carrier moves downward, the roller 35 is pressed against the driven from wheel 1 by means of toothed wheel 40. The cigarette paper is joined with the tip covering and both parts are simultaneously advanced between the rolls 35 and 39. Before this movement commences, the clamping bar 27 must, however, be lifted from the tip covering. This is effected by the set pin on the roller carrier 33, which pin presses on the end 31 of lever'28 before the roller bears against the roll 39; asthe clamping bar 27 is secured to the said lever 28, it is slightly lifted from the severed tip cover ng.
As is seen from Fig. 1, the movement of the connecting rod 7 caused'by the crank 1 can be varied by changing the position of the screw 5 in the slot 6. The screw 5 can be unloosened and the arm connected thereto, placed in any desired portion of the slot 6, and maintained in that position by again tightening the screw 5. In this manner, the connecting rod 7 can be given a movement of regulated length.
I claim:
1. In a machine for applying covering material at spaced lntervals to a strip of v,
cigarette paper, a reel, coacting rollers'having peripheries of uniform curvature between which said strip is led,,and means for intermittently revolving said rollers,
whereby said strip is intermittently with drawn from said reel, separate means for severing said strip after it passes away from said rollers, and separate means for feeding said severed strip so as to contact with the cigarette paper at a given portion thereof.
2. In a machine for applying covering material at spaced intervals to, a strip of cigarette paper, a reel, means for withdrawing said strip from said reel,' a knife for severing said strip after 1t has been withdrawn from said reel, a table on which said strip lies during the severing thereof, clampingmeans for holding sa dstrip on sa d table duringthesevering thereof, a free rollerj over which the"'cig'arettepaper is passed,"a driven roller, means" for placing said free roller in and out of coaction with said driven roller, so as to feed the cigarette paper, and releasing, mechanism for releasing said clamping means from said strip,
whereby the severed portion of said strip can then be fed intermediate the said free roller and said driven roller to contactwith the cigarette paper, and means for operating said releasing mechanism by and during the movement of said free roller toward said driven roller, said releasing mechanism being operated before said free roller comes into cooperative position with respect to said driven roller, so as to be revolved by said driven roller.
3. In a machine for applying covering material at spaced intervals to a strip of cigarette paper, a'reel, means'for withdrawing said strip from said reel, a knife for severing said strip, a table on which said strip lies during the severing thereof, a
clamping'bar mounted on a pivoted'lever, a spring for-normally revolvlng said lever so as to move said clamping bar against said ing the lever holding said free roller so as to place said free roller in and out of coactionv with said driven roller, and a pin said pin being adapted to contact with the lever holding said clamping bar and revolve it so as to raise said clamping bar from said table, before said free roller contacts with said driven roller.
4. In a machine material at spaced intervals to a strip of cigarette paper, coacting rollers having peripheries of uniform curvature, between carried by said lever-holding said free roller,

5.
