Each reduced portion of the base 8 is provided with spaced vertically eX- tending openings 11 through which may be passed suitable fastening elements 12, such as lag screws or the like, for engagement with the sills et.

Depending from the underside of the base 8 at the point of intersection of the oppositely inclined portions 9 with the thickened portion 10 are spaced and oppositely inelined clamping jaws 13, the lower edges, 14, of which are curved outwardly toward the ends of the base 8. The side edges of the clamping jaws 13 are also rounded, as indicated by the numeral 15, so that when the brackets are used upon wagon racks where the sills 4 converge toward the forward bolster. the rear bolster is prevented by the rounded edges 15 from becoming chafed through their contact with the bolster.

Webs 16 are arranged at each end and upon opposite sides of the base 8 and are formed integral with the oppositely inclined portions on the base and with the side edges of the jaws 13, said webs serving to reinforce the base and the clamping jaws 13, and being provided with an inwardly curved side edge 17.

Extending upwardly7 from one side of the base 8 at opposite ends are attaching ears 18, each of which is provided with an open- 19 adapted to have passed therethrough fastening elements 20 which in this instance have been shown as bolts, by means of which the ears and brackets may be secured to the sills 4. When the brackets have been secured to the under faces of the sills 4 of the wagon rack by means of the bolts 20 and screws 12, the rack may be positioned upon the running gear of the wagon in the following manner: The front of the wagon rack is disposed upon the front bolster of the wa on and the rack pushed forwardly7 and held above the rear bolster until the elampin jaws 13 are above the rear bolster. The rear end of the wagon rack is now lowered, and the curved bottom ed es 14 of the clamping jaws 13 serve to guido the rear bolster into contact with the thickcned portion 10 of the plate 8.

Then the forward ends of the sills 4 of the wagon. rack converge toward the front bolster to permit the wagon to be turned in a limited space, it will be noted that the curved side edges 15 of the clamping jaws prevent. the rear bolster being chafed b the jaws on the brackets. and that in providing the brackets with the oppositely inclined clamping jaws the front of the rack may be raised or lowered, as desired, this being considered an important feature of this invention.

The jaws 13 are sutliciently long and ta ered in such a manner that an auxiliary bolster may be positioned upon the rear bolster of the running gear when said bolster has become mutilated or worn through long and continuous use, both bolsters being gripped by the oppositely diverging clamping jaws, while the thickened portion of the base materially strengthens the bracket should the sills of the wagon rack have become worn through their contact with the bolster.

With reference to Fig. 4 of the drawing, it will be seen that the oppositely inclined portions 9 of the base 8 enable the fastening elements 12 to be inserted in the sills 4 at an angle so that the screws are prevented from becoming loose through the strain imposed upon the brackets by the sills, and also that through the use of screws at this point water is prevented from entering the holes for the fastening elements and causing the sills to decay.

From the foregoing description taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, it will be apparent that a wagon rack bracket has been provided which when connected with the rack and engaged with the holsters on the running gear of a wagon will prevent longitudinal movement of the rack upon the holsters and prevent the same from becoming worn or mutilated and also enable various adjustments of the rack with relation to the forward bolster to be made.

Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is A bracket for the purpose set forth, comprising a casting shaped to provide a fiat substantially rectangular base, the central portion thereof being of an equal thickness throughout and the under face of which is beveled or gradually decreased in thickness from the said central portion to the ends of the said base, the base, upon its upper face. and at one of its sides having outstanding ears, the inner faces of whit-hare arranged at a right angle to the flat outer surface of the base, and each of said ears having a central transverse opening, the inclined ends of the base having spaced openings struck at a right angle with respect to the said inclined surfaces and designed to receive securing elements whereby the said securing elements will be arranged at an inward anl gle 'with respect to the bracket and be disposed in pairs to the opposite sides of the opening in the respective ears, whereby a securing element passing through the openings in the said ears will be disposed centrally between the said securing elements passing through the openings in the base, said base. at its juncture with the referred tu inclined ends having depending meinbers, the outer Corner faces of which are straight or at a right angle with respecty to the central portion of the hase, and the inner portions of which are beveed or gradually increasing in thickness from the ends thereof to their juncture with the heee, and web n'iembers integral with the referred to depending members and the beveled ends of the baise and arranged upon the opposite 10 sides of the bracket.
