Description

"JOHN KKMAYO;
Locking and Strapping Trunks.
.Ziiw/Zk,
Patent d May 21,1872.
UNITED STATES J OHN KINNEY MAYO, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK.
. IMPROVEMENT IN DEVICES FOR LOCKING AND STRAPPING TRUNKS.
' Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 126,892, dated May 21, 1872.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN KINNEY MAYO, of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Looking and Strapping Trunks, of which the following is a specification:
The nature and object of my invention consist of a new device for locking and strapping trunks, valises, and other like receptacles on the inside, at the same time, by means of a key, instead of the old method of having to first lock the trunk and then strap it down on the outside by means of straps.
In carrying out my invention I use a small half-round metallic rod or bar running lengthwise of the trunk, with its fiat side against the side of the trunk, one end of this bar or rod being made so as to be operated by a key, which brings the key-hole 011 one end of the trunk, where it is concealed by a metallic band. On one edge of the metallic bar or rod journals are made. Connected with these journals are metallic straps, forming boxes, which are fastened to the sides of the trunk.
'In connection with the metallic bar and its is locked and strapped again by simply clos- If desired not to lock and strap ing the lid. v the trunk when closed the cam 'can be placed in a position to prevent it. I also attach metallic clasps or catches on the back side of trunk and lid as well as the front, so that in case the hinges are broken or taken off the trunk will still be firmly locked and strapped both front and back, and cannot be opened except by the key.
The method now in general use for fastening trunks is not only laborious but unsafe. It matters not how perfect a lock the trunk has it can be opened by removing either the lock or hinges; while it can be readily seen in my invention that these objections are entirely overcome.
In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a trunk with my invention attached. invention for locking and strapping trunks, 8w.
A represents the trunk; B, the lid of same; 0, the metallic rod or bar; d, the key; e and e, the journals; f andf, the spring clasps or catches; and g and g, the metallic clasps attached to the lid of the trunk.
In'operating my invention the trunk A, being closed, is opened by means of the key d, which is inserted by pushing aside the corner band at the right-hand end of the trunk, which band conceals the key-hole. The key d is then placed in the key-hole with its slot u'pward, and on being turned one-quarter round moves the metallic bar or rod O in such a manner as to disconnect the spring clasps or catches f and f from the clasps or catches g and g in the lid of trunk, thereby at the same time unlocking and unstrapping the trunk A by an eccentric or cam motion. In order to again lock and strap the trunk the lid B is closed, although the trunk A can be closed Without lockin g and strapping, by simply keeping the key d inserted in the key-hole.
I claim as my invention 4 1. The eccentric or cam motion herein described for looking and strapping trunks, valises, and other like receptacles on the inside, as set forth.
and f, and the clasps or catches g and 9, arranged and operated substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand and affixed my seal this 20th day of February, A. D. 1872.
