Specification of Letters Patent. Patented June llll, 1e18,
Applica ion filed January 19, 1917. Serial No. 143,233.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, Jesse K. FARLEY, Jr,
a citizen of the United States, residing at Kenilworth, county of Cook, State of Illinois, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Cartons, and declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use the same, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.
My invention has for its object to produce a simple and novel carton construction, particularly applicable but not confined to small cartons, which will permit an ornamental configuration to be given to one face of the carton entirely independent of the shape of the carton.
A further object of my invention is to produce a carton which, by reason of the construction and arrangement of one of its sides, shall havethe appearance of being larger than it actually is.
The various features of novelty whereby my invention is characterized will hereinafter he pointed out with particularity in the claims; but, for a full understanding of my invention and of its objects and advantages, reference may be had to the following detailed description taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, wherein: Figure 1 is a plan vlew of a blank for a carton embodying my invention;
Fig. 2 is a top, plan view of the completed carton; and
Fig. 3 is an end view of the carton.
In accordance with my invention I so shape the blank that one of the sides may pro ect beyond a plurality of the sides contiguous thereto in the completed carton, the projecting edges being fashioned in any desired shape and having parts, if desired, which form continuation of parts of ornaments or figures printed on the body portion of the enlarged side. This idea of means may of course be carried out in a great variety of ways but, for the sake of brevity, I shall confine the detailed description to the single embodiment illustrated in the drawing.
Reference being had to the drawing, 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5 represent connected sections, which, when suitably folded will constitute top and bottom and front and rear walls of a rectangular carton; the section 5 being decorations thereon.
the pasting section adapted to be secured to the section 1. At each end of the sections 2, 3 and t are end-closing flaps, 6, 7 and 8, respectively; the sections 6 and 8 being comparatively short and the sections 7 being elongated so as to adord tongues, 9, which may be inserted into the carton along the inner face of the section 1. 4
In the ordinary carton of this type the section 1 is made exactly like the section 3, except so far as the end-closing flaps are concerned so that where the body portion of the section 3 is rectangular, as shown, the body portion of the section 1 would be a similar rectangle.
In accordance with my invention I give to the section 1 any desired shape or form which will be larger than the rectangular body portion of the opposite section 3, thus ,75 making the section 1 project beyond the be cut out to form a part of a rabbit, for
example, as indicated at 10, the remainder of the rabbit being outlined upon the surface of the blank, as indicated at 11, as part of the printed matter on the blank.
It will thus be seen that a carton may be given an ornamental appearance which isnot controlled by or dependent upon the shape of the carton itself and, by reason of the enlargement of one of the sides of the carton, the latter will look larger and more imposing than would the ordinary carton, no matter What pains were taken with the While I have illustrated and described with particularity only a single preferred form of my invention, I do not desire to be limited to the exact structural details thus illustrated and described; but intend to cover all forms and arrangements which come within the terms employed in the definitions of my invention constituting the appended claims.
I claim:
1. A carton made up of a single blank coihprising five central sections arranged in a row and constituting the top, bottom and two side Walls and an attaching strip, together ,with endsealing flaps for closing the ends of. the carton, that section most remote froni the attaching strip being extended at its three free edges and being shaped to give-'1 a 'oonfiguration to the corresponding SldG/gfif the carton differing from the opposed i 2. A carton blank comprising a series of five sections arranged in a row and adapted to form "four sides of a, carton and an attaching strip, together with flaps extending from. each end of the three intermediate sections adapted to form the ends of the carton, the section at one end of therow being the attaching strip and the section at the opposite end 01 the row having a shape different from any of the other sections so as to permit one side of a cert-on made from the blank to 1 have a configuration which shall be independent of the size and shape of the other three sides of the carton.
