long by t .ree feet Wide the lines of stitching d are preferably spaced three inches apart and the ends of these lines of stitching are prelierably spaced from. the side edges of the mattress a distance of three inches. The distance'between the foot of the mattress and the adjacent line of stitching is also gr'eferably approximately three inches. The
istance between the line of stitching 4 near:
est the head of the mattress is reater than the distance between adjacent linesoi' stitch- 4, preferablybeing from six to eight inches, so that the mattress when" inflated will be'provided With an integral comparatively Wide head portion or pillow I The dimensions just described may, of course, be varied as desired. It will be apparent that When-the mattress is inflated and resting upon a support S, as shown in Fig. 2, the Wide head portion 7 will be raised a considerable distance above the tops of the transverse portion or roll sections and form a comfortable pillow.
Reference character 8 represents a onventional type of. air valve which is secured to the mattress, preferably at one corner thereof, whereby the mattress may be readily inflated or blown up by any suitable means, such as an ordinary bicycle pump.
It Will be apparent that the interior of each of the longitudinally extending side roll sec tions' or portions 6 communicates directly with the interiors of all the transverse porits .3 thereon. and in addition W tions or sections 5, so that when air is pumped into the mattress through the valve 8," all these sectionswill be simultaneously inflated.
The uses of a mattressot this character are. almost limitless. In addition to the uses which have already been mentioned, the mattress is adapted for use on sleeping cars, as it is sanitary and vermin proof. It is also R articularly adapted for use on passenger ps, for in c* se of necessity it can be thrown everheard and will serve an ehlci'ent durable life raft which will be unailected by either fresh or salt Water. life raft it is very seridceable, for a' mattress constructed in accordance with my in ention and having asize of approximately s12; feet by three feet is capable of supporting one person directly support several other persons by means of lines which may be attached tot-he mattress for that purpose.
l hen not in use, the air valve 8 may be opened, whereupon the mattress will collapse and may then be rolled up so as to form a very light compact bundle which can be stowed away in'a very small space.
While my invention is particularly direct ed to a pneumatic or inflatable mattress, sev
eral of the featuresfthereor are obviously posits sides of the matt'ess,
applicable to other types oi": mattresses. it is also to be understood that the mattress specifically described herein is subject to various changes and modifications without any departure from the spirit oi the invcuion and the scope of the appended claims.
Having now described my invention, What I claim as new and desire to protect by Letters Paw" t is as tollows:-
l. A mattress consisting of top and bottom Walls secured together at their edges, said Walls being directly connected so as to provide the'mattress With transverse roll sections, the ends of which are spaced from. the opposite side edges of the mattress. and continuous roll portions extending lengthwise of the n'iattress beyond and adjacent the ends or said transverse roll sections respectively, said roll portions being of substantially the same height as said transverse sections.
2. mattress consisting of vop and bottom Walls secured together at their edges, said Walls being directly connected so as to provide the mattress with transverse roll sections, the ends of which are spaced from the opposite side edges of the mattress, and continuous uninterrupted roll portions beyond and adjacent the ends of said sections respectively, said. portions being of a height as least as great as that of said transverse sections.
3. An inflatable mattress comprising flexible top and bottom Walls secured togethe at their edges, said Walls also directly connected on lines extending transversely of the mattress, the ends of said lines of connection being respectively spaced from opwhereby the mattress when inflated will be provided With transverse roll portions and an uninterrupted roll portion of substantially even contour at each of its sides, the interior of which is in communication with the interior of all said transverse roll portions.
a. An inflatable mattress comprising top and bottom Walls formed of flexible airproof and Waterproof material and secured together at their edges, said walls also being directly connected. on lines extending transversely of the mattress, the ends of said lines of connection being respectively spaced from opposite sides of the mattress, whereby the mattress when inflated will be provided With transverse roll portions and an uninterrupted roll portion of substantially even contour at each of the sides, the interior of which is in communication With-the interior of all said transverse roll portions.
.rectly connected on lines extending transversely of the mattress, the ends of said lines of connection being respectively spaced from raearae opposite sides of the mattress, whereby the mattress when inflated-will be provided with transverse roll portions and an uninterrupted roll portion of substantially even contour at each of the sides, the interior of which is in communication with the interior of all said transverse roll portions.
'6. An inflatable mattress comprising top and bottom walls, formed of flexible airpr'oof and alkali-proof material and secured together at their edges, said walls also being directly connected on lines extending trans-- versely' of the mattress, the ends of said lines of. connection being respectively spaced from opposite sides of the mattress, whereby the mattress when inflated will be provided with transverse roll portions and an uninterrupted roll portion of substantially even ,contour at each of-thesides, the interior of which is in communication with all said transverse roll portions.
7. A pneumatic mattress comprising top and bottom walls of flexible airproot material secured togetherat their edges, said walls being directly secured together so as to provide the mattress with transverse. in-
,flatable sections having one end spaced from the" adjacent side of the mattress, and an inflatable section of substantially the same width as said transverse sections extending lengthwise of the mattress at such side and the interior of which is in communication a with the interior of all said transverse sections.
8. An'inflatable mattress, comprising flexible top and bottom walls secured together at their edges, said walls also being connected on lines extending transversely of the mat trem, the ends of said lines of connection being respectively spaced from opposite sides of the mattress so that the mattress when inflated will be provided with transverse roll portions and an uninterrupted roll portion at each of its sides of substantially the same height as said transverse roll portions.
9. A pneumatic mattress comprising transversely extending inflatable sections having one end spaced from the adjacent side of the mattress, and an inflatable section extending all
