To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, JOHN W. MALooM, a citizen of the United States, residing at Bunn, in the county of Dallas and State of Arkansas, have invented new and useful Improvements in Sewing-Awls, of which the following is a specification.

This invention comprehends improvements in sewing awls and has for one of its objects, the provision of a very simple and practical awl having special thread guiding means.

Another and more specific object of the invention is to provide a sewing awl havin a handle in which is removably fitted a needle holder, said needle holder being secured in the handle by a thread guiding set screw through which the thread is fed from an externally mounted thread holder, to a ide opening in the needle holder and t ence through the eye of the needle.

The invention also aims to generally improve sewing awls to render them more practical, useful and commercially desirable.

With these and other objects in view as will become more apparent as the description proceeds, the invention consists in certain novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter fully described, illustrated and claimed.

Referring in detail to the drawings by numerals, 1 designates the handle of the awl which is formed in one end with a longitudinal socket 2 preferably circular in cross section. A needle holder 3 fits within the socket 2 and is formed in its outer end with a longitudinal needle recess or socket 1 in which is fitted the needle 5.

A thread holder or spool 6 is secured externally on the handle 1 near the needle end thereof by a shaft 7 threaded adjacent its inner end for engagement in the threaded opening 8 of the handle and provided on its outer end with a head 9 which may be grasped by the fingers when it is desired to rotate the shaft and which prevents disengagement of the spool therefrom.

The needle holder is secured in its socket by a combined set screw and thread guide 10 having a threaded shank 11 which works through a threaded opening 12 into engagement with the needle holder. The head or body of the member 10 is enlarged and wedge-shaped with its side walls converging toward each other and is formed with a thread opening 13.

The needle holder is provided adjacent its outer end with a thread opening 14. which communicates with a thread groove or channel 15 in the wall of the needle socket. The needle is preferably formed with a longitudinal threaded groove 16 and with an eye or thread opening 17 The thread openings are all arranged in substantially longitudinal alinement so that the thread 17 may be tensioned by tightening the shaft of the spool to cause the shaft head 9 to frictionally engage the end of the spool. A set screw 18 works through the needle holder and holds the needle removably in its socket.

By mounting the thread holder externally as has been done, the thread is always visible and the holder may be easily removed for winding additional thread thereon or for replacement by another holder. The member 10 performs the double function of guiding the thread and locking the needle holder in position and the needle holder performs the double function of securing the needle in proper operative position and guiding the thread. I/Vhen desired, the needle holder may be removed and the handle used for connection to tools of various kinds, such, for instance, as wrenches, chisels, screw drivers, and the like.

From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, it will be seen that there has been provided a very simple and practical awl having a minimum number of parts, many of which are made to serve double functions all of which are arranged so as to be easy of access.

What is claimed is 5A sewing awl comprising a handle provided in one end with a socket, a needle holder in said socket, a spool supporting pin extending laterally from said handle, a set screw parallel with said pin and extending into said socket and engaging said needle holder, the head of said screw being provided with a hole serving as a thread guide.
