To all whom it may concem:

Be it known that I, Josn A. TORANO, citizen of the United States, residing at Key West, in the county of Monroe and State of Florida, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Chairs of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to chairs, and particularly to chairs in public use; the invention embodying suitable and efficient means, operable, as occasion may demand, for cleaning not only the seating surface of the chair but also the contacting surface of the legs, back and head rest respectively. 7

The chairs hitherto used and provided with but a single seating surface, back, leg and head rest, have a great drawback frequently noticeable not only from an esthetic but also from a hygienic point of view, as they attract heat, etc., from the body, which is unpleasant to the person who makes next use of the chair. This drawback is particularly noticeable in public places where the chairs are used by difierent persons in quick succession; for instance, in barber shops, shoe dressing establishments, and the like.

The object of the invention is to remedy this evil, which is done in the simplest and most practical manner, as even when the chair is constantly in use by a number of persons in quick succession, the seating surface, head, leg and back rest previously used can become completely cooled before it is in position for use again, and the seating surface, head, leg and back rest on which the following person reclines, perfectly fresh.

The above and additional objects are accomplished by such means as are illustrated in their preferred embodiment in the accompanying drawings, described in the following specification and then more particu larly pointed out in the claim which is appended hereto and forms a part of this application.

In describing my invention in detail reference will be had to the accompanying drawings wherein like characters denote like 01' corresponding parts throughout the several views, and in which Figure 1 is a view in longitudinal section illustrating the application of the invention in connection with a barbers chair;

Referring now to the drawings by numerals, 1 designates as an entirety the seat, 2 the back, 3 the leg rest, 4 the head rest, and 5 the foot rest of an ordinary barbers chair. The seat, leg rest, head rest and back rest of the chair are each provided with individual interchangeable body contacting surfaces in order that each person using the chair may have a fresh and ventilated surface upon which torecline or repose. The manner in which the contacting surface of the seat is arranged being the same as the arrangement of the leg, back and head rest, the arrangement and operation of but the former will be herein'disclosed.

The sides of the seat portion 1 designated- 6 extend parallel as shown, each side being opened or latticed in order that the unused portion of an endless band 7 forming the contacting or seating surface may be thoroughly and effectually ventilated, even while the chair is occupied or in use. Sides 6 are maintained in such parallel relation by means of a substantially rectangular frame 8 serving as connecting means and as a support for a plurality of parallel strips 9 upon which a number of cushioning elements such as a spring 10 are mounted. As shown to advantage in Fig. 1, the cushioning element 10 abuts a movable wire mesh covering 11, fitting the frame, the said covering presenting a smooth and unbroken surface to the under side of the band 7 and supporting the latter, when the chair is occupied, in an effectual manner, making the seat yieldable in its nature and quite comfortable to the I occupant of the chair.

Band 7 is arranged over rollers designated respectively 12 and 13, the said two rollers being journaled in the sides 6 of the seat and actuatable in any suitable manner to cause band 7 to be moved and the seating or contacting surface of the chair changed as occasion may demand.

In the back, leg and head rest of the chair, the use of springs 10 may be eliminated as the said last mentioned parts of the chair do not bear the weight of the occupant as does the seat portion 1 previously referred to.

From the foregoing, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings it is evident that each occupant of the chair may be provided with a fresh contacting surface; that the wire mesh support for the contactingsurface of the band 7 is such inits nature as to in no way hinder or impede m0vement of the band when actuated; and that frame 8 serves not only as a support for the spring; 10 and a guide for the'wire mesh covering- 11 but also as a meanswhereby the sides 6 of the chair sections are maintained in parallel relation, consequently immovable, and in proper relative place.

In reduction to practice, have found that the form of my invention, illustrated in the drawings and referred to in the above description, as-the preferred embodiment, is the most efficient and practical; yet realizing that the conditions concurrent with the adoption of my devicewill necessarily vary, I desire to emphasize the fact that various minor changes in details of construction, proportion and arrangement of parts may be resorted to, when required, without sacrificing any of the advantages of my invention,

as defined in the appended claim.

) Having thusfully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by "Letters Patent, "1's "element, a frame disposed over said strips and between the stretches of sald endless element, a strip of Wire mesh covering said frame, andengaging the underside of the upper streteh'of the endless element, and a plurality of springssupported on the strips andbearing-against the said strip of'wire mesh to forma seat cushion.
