To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, HOLISTER E. HESSLER, of Syracuse, in the county of Onondaga and State of New York, have invented a certain new and useful Washing-Machine, of which the following is a specification.

My invention has for its object a washing machine particularly applicable for washing baby cloths; and it consists in the combinations and constructions hereinafter set forth and claimed.

In describing this invention, reference is had to the accompanying drawing in which like characters designate corresponding parts in all the views.

Figure 1 is a longitudinal sectional View of this washing machine.

Fig. 2 is an inverted view of the bottom thereof.

Fig. 3 is an inverted view of the plunger or pounder.

l is the receptacle of my washing machine for containing the cloths to be washed and the cleansing fluid, the receptacle having a removable cover 2 formed with an opening 3 eccentrically placed thereon. The bottom of the receptacle is formed with an outlet opening llocated near the side of the receptacle, and with a depending elliptical flange 5 spaced apart from the edges of the receptacle and designed to fit within the bowl of an ordinary closet. The outlet opening 4 is located within the flange 5 and the portions or surfaces 6 of the bottom outside the flange are designed to rest upon the upper edge of such bowl.

7 is a perforated diaphragm located within the receptacle and spaced apart from the bottom thereof, the diaphragm resting at its edges upon lugs 8 projecting from the side wall of the receptacle and said diaphragm having legs 9 which engage the bottom.

' 10 is a casing located within the receptacle in line with the opening 4, the casing being secured to the side wall of the receptacle and extending from near the top of the receptacle and terminating short of the bottom and extending through the diaphragm 7 which is provided with a cutout at itsedge for the casing. 11 is a plug for the outlet opening 4, the plug having a stem 12 ex tending upwardly through the casing 10. The casing 10 protects the stem from move ment and accidental displacement by the Specification of Letters Patent.

My washing machine is particularly advantageous in washing baby cloths, and in use, the receptacle is placed upon the bowl of a closet, the outlet opening being closed by the plug 11, and the cloths and washing fluid are placed within the receptacle, the cloths resting on the diaphragm 7. The plunger or pounder 13 is then worked upwardly and downwardly and the cloths thoroughly kneaded therewith and when the cloths are washed the plug 11 is withdrawn from the outlet hole 4 by means of the stem 12 permitting the fluid to drain through said hole and into the bowl of the closet. The cloths may then be rinsed with clean water which is pressed therefrom by forcing the plunger downwardly and squeezing the cloths between the plunger and the diaphragm.

What I claim is 1. In a washing machine, a receptacle for holding the washing fluid and the material to be washed, movable means within the receptacle for coacting with the material to be washed, the receptacle having its bottom formed on the lower side thereof with a substantially elliptical depending flange set in from the edge of the bottom and designed to conform to the inner face of the upper end of the bowl of a closet, the receptacle also having a valve controlled outlet located within such flange, substantially as and for the purpose described.
