Description

A. F. JACKSON.
improvement in Bax-Openers.
No. 129,412, Patented July 16, 1872.
Wfinesse s hm en v aw PATENT OFFICE.
AMBROSE F. JACKSON, OF MlNNEAPOLIS, MINNESOTA.
IMPROVEMENT IN BOX-OPENERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 129,412, dated July 16, 1872.
I, AMBROSE F. JACKSON, of Minneapolis, in the county of Hennepin, in the State of Minnesota, have invented certain Improvements in Box-Openers, of which the following is a specification In the drawing, Figure 1 is a side'view of the opener. Fig. 2 is also a side view, the reverse of Fig. 1; and Fig. 3 is an edge view or a front view of Fig. 2.
' The object of this invention is to introduce an efficient and cheap implement by which the lids or covers that are nailed down can be certainly and easily raised from the box; and it consists in the construction and combination of the parts that make the implement, as will more fully hereinafter be described.
A is the hand-lever, of any desired length and size, rounded at its lower end at a, and has a slot in its.end. When the lever A is in a horizontal position there projects from its lower side, and but a little distance from the slotted end, an arm, a, which is also slotted.
B is a fulcrum-post fitted in the slot and pivoted to arm a at 0, so as to freely swing in said slot. The lower end of this fulcrum-post is bent at right angles to theupright part and forms a broad foot to sustain the strain, while the extreme part of .the foot comes to an edge at I), like a wedge in form, 'so that it can be easily forced into the joint between the cover and body of the box, and have a firm footing on the edge of the side-board of the box. 0 is the cover-lifting arm, and is fitted into the slot in the end of the lever at a, and pivoted at i to lever-A; is similar in form to the fulcrum-standard B, but is as much shorter in length as the distance is between the pivoted points e and c on lever A; is bent at right angles to form a wedge or chisel edge at c; and has a hammer-face at c. The wedge or chisel projection may or may not have a cleft, c, in it to pull nails, as may be desired.
Operation.
The lever A is raised to a perpendicular position, when the fulcrum-foot of post B and &the chisel or wedge-edge c of arm 0 are of the same level and coincident with. the joint be-- tween the cover D and sides of the box E, when the wedge c is driven into the joint by striking the hammer-face c with a hammer or mallet and forcing the wedge into-the joint, when the fulcrum-foot will also go in between the cover and top edge of the side of the box; then, by turning the lever A over and downward, causes the arm 0 to be lifted, andwith it the cover or lid of the box, as seen in Fig.1.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The box-opener, composed of the lever A, fulcrum-post B, and foot I), and lifting-arm 0, having its right-angled wedge or chisel-shaped projection c, substantially as herein described.
AMBROSE F. JACKSON.
