Be it lmown that I, GABRIEL A. SKOMARS. a citizen of the United States, residing at Minneapolis, in the county of Hennepin and State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Toy Guns, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to toy guns'an'd has for its object to provide a gun suitable for use by children whereby light projectiles may be discharged without likelihood of danger resulting when the gun is operated to discharge the projectile. Another object is to provide a gun of this character which may be readily and cheaply constructed from waste pieces of wood and which will be efficient in operation to aord amusement to children.

The full objects and advantages of my invention will appear in connection with the detailed description thereof and the novel features embodied in my inventive idea will be particularly pointed out in the claims.

Figure 1 is a side elevational View. Fig. 2 is a detailed sectional view showing the device set for operation. Fig. 3 is a bottom plan view. Fig. 4 is a view similar to Fig. 2 showing the device after it has been operated.

As shown in the drawings the gun con sists of a barrel provided with a bore 14 and having a breech 16 provided with a vertical recess 18 open at the top and botw tom. A hammer or striker 2() extends through this recess so as to project beyond the open top thereof and this hammer is pivoted upon a pin 22. A sti coiled spring 24 has one end secured in a recess in the front of the hammer by means of a nail or bolt 26 passing between the coils of the spring and through the hammer from side to side. The forward end of the spring eX- tends into a recess in the breech and is anchored by means of a wire 28 secured to the spring, the outer end of the wire being secured by a nail or screw 30 driven into the breech. The rear of the hammer is pro vided with an intermediate extension 32 which serves to close the upper rear portion of theV recess 18. The lower rear portion of the hammer is provided with a trigger engaging projection 34 adapted to be engaged by a forwardly enten'ding projection 36 on a trigger 38 which 1s pivoted by means of a pin V40. The pins 22 and 40 are heldV in place by plates 42 secured on each side of the breech by rivets or bolts 44 passing therethrough. To the upper end lof the trigger is secured one end of a light coiled spring 46, the other end of which is anchored to a nail or screw 48 driven into the breech.

The operation and advantages of my invention will be understood from the foregoing description. Upon pulling the hammer back into the position shown in Figs. 1 and 2 the projection 34 thereon will engage underneath the projection 36 on the trigger. The spring 24 is thus held in a stretched condition while the spring 46 holds the trigger with its projection 36 in forward position. The gun is intended to shoot light projectiles 50 preferably of wood which are placed at the rear end of the bore in about the position shown in Fig. 2. When the trigger is pulled rearwardly the hammer or striker is released and is drawn forward to the position shown in Fig. 4 by the tensioned spring 24 with a quick snappy action to propel the projectile forward in the bore 14 and out of the front end thereof. The rear end of the barrel where it joins the breech is cut on a curve so as to leave a recess in front of the top portion of the hammer thereby preventing injury to the fingers of the child if he should fail to remove them before pulling the trigger.

I claim:

l. A toy gun comprising a breech member, a barrel member connected to said breech member, a hammer mounted at the rear of said barrel member, means for urging said hammer forwardly and a trigger for holding said hammer retracted, the rear end of said barrel member being cut on a curve so as to leave a recess between the same and the hammer when the latter is in released position.

2. A toy gun comprising a breech member, a barrel member connected to said breech member, the latter having a vertical recess open at the top and bottom, a hammer pivoted in said recess, means for urging said hammer forwardly, an extension on the intermediate rear portion of said hammer for closing the upper portion of said recess, and a trigger for holding said hammer retracted.

A toy gun comprising a breech member, a barrel member connected to said breech member, the latter having a vertical recess open at the top and bottom, a hammer pivoted in said recess, a strong coiled :spring secured at its rear end to said hammer and having its front end anchored in :said breech member, a trigger pivoted in :said recess back of saidrhammer, and a comparatively Weak spring secured at its front end to the top of said trigger and having its rear end anchored in said breech member, said Weak spring` being adapted to hold said trigger in position to restrain said hammer when the latter is retracted.

A toy gun comprising a breech member, a barrel member connected to said breech member, the latter having a vertical recess open at the top and bottom, a hammer pivoted in said recess and extending beyond the top thereof to form a striking surface for driving a projectile through the bore of said barrel member, said hammer having a rearward projection near its loWer end, a spring for urgin said hammer tor f Wardly, a trigger in sai recess and extending beyond the bottom thereof, said trigger having a forwardl projection intermediate its ends to engage said hammer projection, and a spring for holding the lower portion of said trigger toward the hammer.
