SURGICAL INSTRUMENT.
. Specification of Letters Patent.

Application filed June 24, 1918. Serial No. 241,475.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, HARVEY C. MAS- LAND, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city and county of Philadelphia, State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Surgical Instrument, of which the following is a specification.
-My invention consists of a surgical instrument adapted for drilling, burring, sawing, doweling, etle, having variable gages and guards which may be adjusted with precision in a convenient manner.
It consists also of novel means on the grip part proper of the handle for stopping the rotary motion of the tool when so required.
It consists also of a novel provision of the handle of the instrun'ient whereby it. may rest flat on a table or other support, and so be operated in a steady and stable manner.
The invention is satisfactorily illustrated in the accompanying drawing, but the important instrumentalities thereof may be varied, and so it -is to be understood that the invention is not limited to the specific details shown and described, as long as they are within the spirit or scope of theclaims.

Referring to the drawings 1 designates the handle of the instrument adapted to be graspedin the operation of the same, it having mounted therein in the gri part proper thereof in the longitudinal direction thereof, the rotatable mandrel or shaft 2 to one end of which may be attached a flexible shaft or other means for communicating power to the mandrel, the other end of which is secured to the clutch 3 which is adapted to have a drill, saw, bur, eto.,
fitted thereto and retained therein.
In the side of the handle is a longitudinally extending recess 4 which forms a runway for the plate 5 which is seated movably therein and provided with a longitudinally extending slot 6, the latter receiving the screw 7 which is adapted to enter the body of the handle, by which provision said plate may be adjusted forward or backward on the handle and firmly held in position thereon.
The plate 5 has a portion 8 extended forward thereof and provided with side flanges, it occupying a position over the clutch 3 and having seated on it the slidable arm 9 which is adjustable on said portion 8, the contiguous part of said arm 9 on said portion 8- within said side flanges having therein a slot to receive the shank of the screw 10, which shank is connected with the said portion 8. On said shank is the nut 11 which when tightened is adapted to connect said arm 9 with said portion 8 and retain the former in adjusted position.
On the forward end of the arm 9 is the eye or segmental arch 12 which being tubular freely encircles the shank of the drill 13 and is adapted to form a depth gage for the latter, it being evident that by means of the plate 5, the extension 8 and the arm 9, the
arch 12 may be adjusted with nicety and precision relatively to the work to be accomplished, it being noticed that the extension 8 and the arm 9 are of angular form so as to be set properly over the clutch. As the eye or tubular arch is fitted over the drill or a tool 13, it is centered on the latter and so stops true on the bone when the adjusted depth of penetration of the tool is reached, and it serves also to protect soft tissues from being picked up and mutilated by the rotating tool. The arm 9 may have thereon a gage different from the gage 12, so said arm as differently equipped may be removed from and reapplied to the plate 5 without displacing the latter from the handle or actually disturbing itsadjustment thereon.
14, 15 and 16 represent side elevations of other forms of tools or implements that may be employed inmy invention.
In the handle 1 is a longitudinally extending bore 17 in which is freely fitted the slidable rod or pin 18 whose forward end is adapted to enter the recess 19 in the clutch 3 and act as a stop preventing rotation of the latter and consequently of the instrument thereon.
In order to withdrawn the pin from the clutch, the rear portion thereof is provided withtthe' stud 20 as .a finger piece, and the handle has within it adjacent to the rear end of the bore 17, the elbow shaped recess 21 which when the pin 18 is withdrawn and turned in proper direction is adapted to re ceive said stud 20, the forward wall 22 of" the side wall 23 of said recess 21 then forming a shoulder which acts'as a stop for said stud, it being noticed that the bottom of the wall 21* of said recess 21 opposite to the side wall 23 is cutaway and inclined as in Fig. 2, so that the resilient device or spring 24: in
the terminal portion of the bore-17 may'pushforward the pin 18 which carries said stud, whereby the latter rides under the inclined bottom of the wall 21 and is stopped against the forward wall 22 by the stud 20 being shown in Fig. 6.
The nose or point of the pin is now held withdrawn from the recess 19 in'the clutch 3 and the latter is free to be rotated.
By manipulatingthe stud it may be with drawn from the wall 22, it moving under the inclined bottom of the wall 21*, after which it is turned in the recess 21 and outof the same whenthe spring 24 again becomes operative to advance the pin 18, and the nose or point ofthe latter enters the recess 19 of the clutch, whenthe latter and consequently the tool is locked and prevented from rota-,
tion. In this case, the instrument is disconportion of its surface, otherwise circular,
cut-away forming the right-lined face 25 which may rest fiat on said table, see Fig. 5
In this case the plate 5 and the arm 9 with the gage and guard 12 may be removed so as not to interfere with the movement of the handle, and consequently of the instrument.
In Fig. 10, the eye 12 is segmental or semitubular and is adapted to cover the bur 14 so that when the latter is in operation, said of the recess 21, as shown in Fig. 3, said recess when unoccupied eye protects the surrounding tissues without injuring the same.
In lieu of entering the pin 18 into the chuck 3 to prevent rotation thereof I formhf in the mandrel or shaft 2 the recess 26 which having its head engaged by the forward end of the spring or spring plate 28 whose rear end is connected with said handle by the screw29, or other suitable fastening passing through said rear end into the handle 1. On
the latter is the slide 30 which is adapted to is adapted to receive the point of the pin 27, the latter freely occupying the handle 1 andter is free to rotate and cause the operation of the chuck and tool or, implement.
It will be seen that when the pin 18 is engaged with the chuck, or the pin 27 is engaged with the driving shaft 2, the rotating mechanism is locked and becomes rigid with the handle, whereby the instrument may be used as a hand device independent of the driving motor.
i It will be seen also that the means for adjusting the gage or guard for the tool are on the exterior of the handle and so convenient of access. 1 Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a bone surgical instrument, a handle, a rotatable mandrel-like member mounted thereon, means on said member adapted to connect it with and disconnect it from power driving mechanism, a tool carrier on said member, and means on said handle adapted to lock said carrier with the handle.
2. In a surgical instrument of the character stated, a handle, a rotatable tool carrying member mounted on said handle, a rotatable driving mandrel on said handle connectible with said member, a gage for said tool, and a support for said gage, said support being formed of a plurality of members which are adjustably connected with each other, and one of the members is adjustably connected with said handle.
3. In a surgioalinstrument of'the charac. a tool engaging chuck ter stated, a handle,
mounted on-the latter, a driving member on w said handle, and a pin-like member on said I handle having one end adapted to be engaged with said chuck to prevent rotation of the same and consequently of the tool,
said pin-like member having thereon a finger piece which is adapted to rotate the lat ter in opposite directions, said handle hav en n ing therein a recess'in which said piece is adapted to enter and engage with a wall of said recess as a stop for-said pin like member in the inoperative position of the same.
4. In a surgical instrument of the character stated, a handle, a tool carrying chucklike member, a rotatable pin-like member on member and force it toward said chuck-like member and retain it in engagement therewith, to hold said finger piece in engagement in said recess when said pin-like member is disengaged from said chuck-like member. 5. In a surgical instrument of the character stated, a handle, a tool engaging chuck mounted on the latter, a drivin member on said handle, a pin-like mem er on said handle having one end adapted to be engaged with said chuck to prevent rotation of the same and consequently of the tool,
said pin-like member having thereon a finger piece which is adapted to rotate the lat' term opposite directions, said handle having therein a recess in which said piece is adapted to enter and engage with a wall of said recess as a stop for said pin-like member in the inoperative position of the same, and a resilient device adapted to bear against said pin-like member in the operative and inoperative positions of the latter. v
6. In a surgical instrument of the character stated, a handle, a rotatable tool carrying member on the handle, a power driven mandrel on said handle adapted to be connected with said member, and a gage for the tool having a connection with said hanround the tool.
7. In a combined power and hand operated instrument, a handle, a rotating devicemounted on said handle adapted to be connected with power-driving mechanism, a tool carrier connecti-ble-with said device,
and means on said handle adapted to lock said carrier and prevent free rotation of the same and of said tool,--said'handle having on its s1de a fiat sl rface adapting it to rest flat on a support whereby when said deviceis unlocked the handle may be held rigid on said support under the high speed rotation of the tool.
