of the United States, and residents, respec-A tively, of Kiamesha, county of Sullivan, and State of New York, and of-the borough of Manhattamcity of New York, county and State of New York, have made certain new and useful Inventions Relating to the EX- panding of Rings by Internal Pressure, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to a press which is particularly adapted for the manufacture of paper bottles. One feature of the invention also relates to the method which is preferably carried out in the apparatus such as is herein described.
In the manufacture of'paper receptacles it is desirable to 'fixedly secure in place upon the paper receptacle as it is being made a clamping ring which is U-shape in cross section. In actual practice this ring is preferably made so that one leg vof the U is longer than the other in order that the paper can be clamped between the legs when they are forced toward each other in a manner to cause a natural bend or set in the paper.
The apparatus which is shown in the drawings is paricularly adaptable for use in securing such a ring in place on the end of a ltube as, for instance, the upper end of a body member of a bottle, either before or after the bottom of the bottle has been secured in place to the body member.

The frame of the press is indicated .by reference character 1 and to this frame there is secured in any suitable manner, as by means of screws 2, a hollow anvil or resisting member 3. The press also comprises a series of hammers or pressing members 4 which extend into an opening 5 of the anvil 3. These hammers or pressing members 4 are supported on the frame 1 by depending port-ions 6 which enter the concave portions 7 in the frame. these hammers. that is the portion nearest to the center of the press, has a cam portion 8 .which is engaged by the shoulder 9 of a plunger 10, and it will be observed that as the plunger 10 `is forced upwardly the hammers will be forced outwardly toward the operative face of the anvil. The upward movement of this plunger 10 is accomplished through the medium of a lever 11 which is fulcrumed on the frame at 12 and which lever engages the plunger at 13. A screw 14 provides a means for limiting the movement of this plunger in a downward' direction.
The inner side of each of After the operation of pressing has been y tive to the anvil and the hammers. 'Each of the hammers also has a downwardly and outwardly extending portion 17 that serves as a guide for positioning the ring as it is being placed in the machine. Each of these hammers has what may be referred-to as a main pressing portion at 18 and an overhanging portion or shoulder at 19. It will be observed, however, that the llower end of the guiding portion 17 projects outwardly beyond the outwardly extending shoulder 19. The lower edge of this shoulder 19 is located above the upper free edge of the clamping ring, when the latter is being operated upon. so that as the hammers are forced outwardly against a number of places in the peripheral portion of said upper free edge the longer inner leg which extends above the free edge of the shorter leg will be simultaneously forced outwardly more than will the rest of the inner leg. In other words, the inner leg can assume the position shown in Fig. 3 and when the parts of the paper tube are clamped between these legs they will be bent or given a set as at 20. Thus the clamping ring will be secured in place and the parts which are between the legs thereof will be firmly clamped.
In performing the operation of pressing the clamping ring in the manner just described, it will be observed that the hollow anvil serves as a resisting member which supports the outer or shorter leg of the clamping ring while the inner or longer leg is being pressed.
The anvil member is also provided with a flaring opening, the function of which is to guide the work as it is being introduced into position to be operated upon. It will be noticed that the walls of the flared opening in the anvil member are inclined at different angles with the result that when the work-piece is being inserted into the ma-- chine the upper wall of the opening in the anvil will cause the work to be thrown inwardly toward the guiding element 17 of the hammers, so that no matter how careless the operator may be it is practically impossible to insert the work into the machine except in its correct positiong'that is to say, the angle formed by the two inclines of the wall of the opening engaging'the tapering walls of the neck of the receptacle causes a contraction reducing the diameter thereof and thus causing the mouth ofthe receptacle to impinge against the inner leg of the U- shaped ring. Thus it will be seen that by this arrangement the outer leg of the U- shaped ring is virtually covered. The improvernents herein set forth are not limited to the precise construction and arrangement shown and described as they may be embodied in many forms and modifications without departing` from the spirit and scope of the invention.

1. A press of the class described comprising in combination a hollow anvil which is provided with means for guiding a workpiece to an operating position relative to the anvil, a series of hammers or pressing extend into the anvil opening, and means for forcing the hammers or pressing members outwardly, each of said hammers or pressing members having an outwardly and downwardly extending portion for'guiding a workpiece to operating position and also having an outwardly projecting shoulder on its face. j
2. A press of the class described comprising in combination a frame, a hollow anvil mounted on the frame, a series of hammers mounted on the frame, each of which is arranged to `move outwardly toward the face of the anvil, and means for forcing the hammers outwardly toward the anvil, the upper end of the anvil and the upper ends of the Ihammers being shaped so as to provide means for guiding of the work into operating position between hammer and anvil.
. 3. A press of the class described comprising in combination a frame, a hollow anvil mounted on the frame, a series of outwardly movable hammers mounted on the frame and extending into the opening in the anvil, and means for simultaneously forcing the hammers outwardly, each of the hammers having a main or body pressing portion and an outwardly extending projection or shoulder.
4. A press comprising in combination a hollow anvil and a series of hammers which extend into an opening in the anvil, said hammers each having a downwardly and outwardly extending portion at the top thereof for guiding the work-piece into operative position relative to the hammers, said hammers each having a main-pressing portion and an outwardly extending projection or shouldervwhich are located below the lower end of the downwardly and outwardly inclined guiding portion.

A press comprising in combination a hollow anvil and a series of hammers which extend into an opening in the anvil, said hammers each having a downwardly and outwardly extending portion at the top thereof for guiding a work-piece into operative position relative to the hammers, said hammers each havin a main pressing portion and an outwardly extending projection or shoulder, which main presslng portion and which outwardly extending projection or shoulder are both located below the lower end of the Vdownwardly and outwardly inclined guiding portion but with the shoulder adjacent to the lower end of said down- Lwardly and outwardly inclined guiding portion.
6. A press for assembling a tubular member and a U-shaped ring member comprising, in combination, an anvil having an opening therein, a series of hammers extending into the opening in the anvil and provided with means for guiding a work piece into operative position relative to the' ring, and said anvil being provided with guiding means whereby the end ofthe workpiece will be thrown inward to clear the outer leg of the ring.
7. A press for assembling a tubular member and a U-shaped ring member, comprising 1n combination an anv1l having an opening therein, hammers extending into Said opening and provided with means for guidv -will be thrown inward to clear the outer leg of the ring.
