Be it known that I, AARON T. CARROLL,- a

- citizen of the United States, residing at Scranton, in the county of Lackawanna and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Adjustable Toe-Caps, of which thefollowing is a specification.

This invent1on relates to toe caps for boots and shoes and has for its object to provide a comparatively simple and inexpensive deas the description proceeds.

The material of which the cap 5 is formed is pressed or forced -in wardly to form a laterally extending flange 8 adaptedto be positioned between the toe 6 of the shoe and the sole 9, as best shownin Fig. 2 of the drawings, said flange serving to center the cap on the toe of the shoe and also serving to reinforce and strengthen said cap. Depending from the flange 8 is a marginal flange 10 which fits over the outer shoe, there being openings 11 formed in the flange at predetermined intervals for th reception of nails or similar fastening detector is retained in position on the toe of the shoe; The flange 8 conforms to the shape of the cap and preferably extends throughout the entire inner circumference thereof, while the depending flange 10 "1s coextensive with the outer circumferential 1 wall of the cap and covers the major portion of the sole 9 at the toe of the shoe, as best shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings. By making the toe cap or protector in this manner the outer ends of the cap may be pressed together or spread apart so as to adapt the cap to the toes of shoes of different sizes.

The flange 8 is preferably formed with one or more \l-shaped incisions 8' so as to permit the flange and cap to be bent or expanded and contracted to fit the toes of shoes of different sizes.

The metal, after depending flange 10 is formed, is preferably pressed inwardly to provide oppositely disposed segmental attaching flanges 12 and a centrally disposed attaching plate 15 adapted to bear against the tread face of the sole and form a protection thereto in the act of walking. The

The inner edge of the attaching plate 'is preferably straight and provided with V-shaped cle'Ets or incisions 16, there being similar clefts or incisions 17 formed in the attaching flanges 12 so as to permit ready expansion and contraction of the toe protector to 'fit shoes of different sizes,

It will thus be seen that the segmental cap forms'an el'licient protection for the toe of the shoe, while the depending flange protects the lip of the sole 9 thereby preventing excessive wear on or abrasion of said parts of the shoe. It will also be noted that inasmuch as the attaching plate bears against the tread face of the sole it follows that said plate not only forms an additional means for attaching the protectorto the shoe but also provides an additional wearing surface r'or the sole of the shoe at the point subjected to the most wear. It will, of course, be understood that the toe caps or protectors may be made in different sizes and shapes to conform to the different styles or grades of boots and shoes and that said cap protectors may be nickeled, japanned or otherwise plated or coated so as to protect the same from the deleterious actions of the elements. The device being stamped from a single sheet of metal, may be conveniently manufactured and placed upon the market at a minimum price so as to be within the reach of all.

Having thus described my. invention, what is claimed as newis:

An adjustable toe protector for boots and shoes comprising a cap havin an inwardly extending flange and a dependlng flange terminating in an inwardly extending attaching plate, there being segmental flanges, disposed on opposite sides of the attaching plate and substantially V-shaped incisions formed in the inner edges of the inwardly extending flange, segmental flanges and said attaching plate to permit expansion and contraction of the cap.
