cal appliances and has particular reference to a bandage.
An object of the invention is to provide an improved bandage adapted to be applied to a wound in such manner as to effectively protect the same and prevent `further injury to and also permit of proper ventilation of the wound while healing.
Another object is to provide a bandage of this character which is simple in construccarrying out the purpose for which it is designed.
The inventive idea involved is capable of receiving a variety of mechanical expressions one of which, for the purpose of illustrating the invention, is shown in the accompanying drawing wherein:
Figure 1 is a plan view of one side of the bandage.
Fig. 2 is a similar view of the other side.
Fig. 3 is a transverse section through the bandage.
Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the plate or body portion of the bandage.
The bandage isillustrated in what is now believed to be its preferred forni and comprises a plate or body portion 5 of disk-like formation and made of steel or other light material which is nickel plated to prevent rusting, the plate being formed from a relatively thin sheet of material so that the saine may be flexed as desired. The plate 5 is preferably concaved or bent so that the central portion thereof will be spaced from the wound over which the. plate is placed and 'said central portion is provided with a plurality of Ventilating openings 6 which will pe'rmit the air to pass through the plate and thus aid in healing the wound. A
A casing for the plate 5 is provided and this casing preferably comprises a pair of Specification of Letters Patent.
tending beyond the edge of the plate 5 inl abutting relation land stitched or otherwise secured together as indicated at 9 and l0 to form a rim portion. The cover 7 engages the outer surface of tlie plate 5 and entirely covers the same' with the exception of the central portion thereof which is provided with the openings 6 and at this point the cover has an opening 11. The cover 8 com- Y. pletes the inclosure of the plate and extends This invention is an improvement in surgithrough certain of the openings 6 in thev plate 5.
In order to further protect the wound a layer of cotton or other absorbent material 14 is preferably interposed between the inner cover 8 and the adjacent inner surface of tion, easy to manufacture and effective 1nv Patented Oct. 21, 1919. Y Application'led April 30,'1918. Seria11N.-231,736.V 1' l the late 5 and is held inV this position by the of cotton 11 may be readily replaced after first removing the stitchings 9 and 10.
For the purpose of securing the bandage to the body, the coveringis provided with buckles 15 secured thereto and adapted to be engaged by oppositely disposed straps 16 which are passed around that portion of the body to which the bandage is applied and secured so as to prevent detachment thereof.
It will be noted that the cover members 7 and 8 extend beyond the periphery of the curved plate 5 so that the filling 14 is between the edge of the plate and the cover member 8. There Vis thus provided a yieldable padding .between the edge of the plate and the cover member with its obvious ad-l and portions adjacent the outer edge of the plate secured together, and also having central openings the edges of which surround certa-in of the openings in said plate, means In testimony whereof, I aliX my signature, exteiding through others of said openings in the presence of two Witnesses.
in t e plate and engaginfr said covers to secure the latter t0 the platne', and a layer of EDWARD F' MEEHAN absorbent material interposed between one Witnesses: of the covers and the adjacent face of the JOHN J. BARRY, plate. Y JOHN G. SAVARESE.
