Description

MPETERS. PHOTO LITHUGRAP WASHINGTON. D C.
` UNITED sTATEs PATENT oEEioE.
SIMON BARNHART, OF CHILLICOTHE, OHIO.
FAN-BLOWER.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 13,346, dated July 31, 1855.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SIMON BARNHART, of Chillicothe, in the county of Ross and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Fan-Blowers of Blacksmiths7 Forges, &c.; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which- Figure l, is a plan or top view of a fan blower with my improvements, as constructed for a blacksmiths forge. Fig. 2, is a vertical transverse section through the line (m) in Fig. l, showing an end view of the case and fan. Fig. 8, is a vertical longitudinal section through the line y, y, Fig. 2.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several figures.
My invention relatesto an improvement in the construction or form of the blades of the fan, whereby they are rendered capable, as they revolve, of collecting from the outside of the case and forcing and drawing into the case simultaneously with the expulsion of the air already therein, an additional quantity of air besides that which naturally flows in to supply the place of that expelled, and thus facilitate and increase the action of the blower or increase the pressure in the pipe which conducts the air tothe lire-. to a very great extent, without the necessity of employing additional power, or increasing the size of the fan.
f The nat-ure of said improvement consists in making each of the blades with a flange or lip on one of its sides, said flange or lip being straight or at right angles with the blade from the tip to the center of the same and therefrom is bentdown and made to extend obliquely outward in such a manner that a small spiral wing is formed, on each blade, which extends outside the case through the inlet air passage of the saine and, as the fan revolves, collects and forces an additional quantity of air into the case.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention I will proceed to describe its construction andv operation minutely. t
A, in the accompanying drawing repreing in bearings a., a, attached to the sides of f the case A.
F, F, F, F, are the blades set as usual tangentially on the shaft E, and curved in a reverse direction to that in which they revolve so that they shall more readily throw off or expel the air or not lift and carry it around in acircle. 50, represents the flange or lip provided on each of the blades for catching and forcing an additional quantity of air into t-he fan case as the fan revolves, b, indicating the portion which stands at right angles to the blade and 0, the portion which is bent down and made to extend obliquely outward through the inlet air passage B, and has a slight spiral twist given to it as shown in the drawing; the portion c, forms the small spiral wing which collects air from the outside of the case and force-s it into the same.
Operation: The fan is caused to revolve in the direction indicated by the arrows l, by means of a treadle through a band leading from a large fly wheel to a pulley on the fan shaft and the small oblique spiral wings consequently caused to come in contact with the atmosphere, indicated-by the arrows 2, outside the case and owing to their shape collect and force it into the case as indicated by the arrows 3, and thus simultaneously with the expulsion of the air already in the case an additional quantity beside that which naturally flows into the case is supplied and the pressure in the pipe leading to the fire consequently increased to a considerable degree. IVhat I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is- Providing each of the blades of the fan with a lip or flange b, c, substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
