PATENT OFFICE.
JAMES F. GODWARD, 0F ASHTABU'LA HARBOR, OHIO.
GARMENT-SUPPORTER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 20, 1920.
Application filed March 3, 1919. Serial No. 280,366.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES F. Gonwsin), a citizen of the United States, residing at Ashtabula Harbor, in the county of Ashtahula, tate of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Garment- Supporters; and I do hereby declare the fol lowing to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The invention relates to garment supporters and more particularly to elastic harness for supporting hose and sustaining the leg portions of trousers straight.
The primary object of the invention is the provision of a harness of this character wherein the same is worn within the trousers and bridges the crotch thereof to extend downwardly of the leg portions at the inner side thereofto serve for supporting the hose and also tosustain the leg portions of the trousers straight without regard to any irregularity of the legs of the user, whether they be bowed or otherwise deformed from straight conformation, as the leg portions of the trousers will hang smooth and straight to give a neat and straight appearance thereto.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a harness of this character wherein the same is readily adjustable so that it may be worn by men of different heights, and particularly where the legs are of different lengths, without discomfort in the use thereof.
A further object of the invention is the provision of a harness of this character wherein the trouser leg portions will not bow inwardly or outwardly in the use of said harness by reason of the irregular conformation of the legs of the wearer and perfectly free action of the legs can be had without any discomfort resultant from the use of the garter or harness.
A still further object of the invention is the provision of a harness of this character which is extremely simple in construction, readily and easily applied within the trousers or removed therefrom, capable of being attached to, and detached from the hose of the wearer, readily and easily adjusted, strong, durable, thoroughly reliable and eiiicient in its purpose and inexpensive to manufacture.
Vi ith these and other objects in view, the
the harness constructed in accordance withthe invention, applied, the trousers being broken away.
Fig. 2, is a perspective view of the harness removed from the trousers.
Fig. 3, is a vertical longitudinal sectional view through one portion of the hanger strap of the garter or harness showing in detail the adjustable mounting of one of the garter or leg straps.
Fig. A, is a fragmentary vertical sectional view showing in detail the adjustable hanger strap of the harness.
Similar reference characters indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views in the drawing.
Referring to the drawing in detail, A designates a pair of trousers which are of the ordinary well known construction B, each of a pair of hose, the trousers and the hose being shown upon a wearer in Fig. 1 of the drawing, and C the harness hereinafter fully described.
The harness comprises an elastic hanger strap including the long and short sections 5 and 6 respectively which at their adjacent ends are trained through an adjusting slide 7 so that the longer strap can be lengthened or shortened correspondingly to the size of the wearer of the harness. Mounted on the free ends of the sections and 6 of the hanger strap, hose attaching devices 8, each are of the ordinary well known construction for the fastening of the cuffs of the hose thereto, either at the inner sides of the legs of the wearer or at the fronts of the legs.
The elastic hanger strap including the sections 5 and 6 saddles or bridges the crotch of the trousers A so that the stretches of the hanger strap will extend downwardly in the leg portions of the trousers A between said leg portions and the legs of the wearer, and the hose attaching devices 8 will be fastened tothe cuffs of the hose so that when the wearer is standing the depending stretches of the hanger strap will be straight, thereby acting upon the leg portions at the inner sides thereof to maintain the same correspondingly straight irrespective of the possible deformity of the legs of the wearer. Thus it will be seen that the trousers will be sustained smooth and perfectly straight when the wearer is standing, thereby concealing the deformity of the irregular conformation of the legs of the wearer, presenting a neat and attractive appearance to the trousers.
Carried by the sections 5 and 6 are elastic leg embracingor garter straps 9, which are the slides 12, so that these loop straps can be positioned at the required points of location. on the stretches. These loops loosely engage the leg or garter straps 9 and act with the lower portions of the hanger strap to hold the hose up when the user or wearer is in seated position. Furthermore, the loop straps 11 will serve to prevent a distorting of the depending stretches of the sections 5 and6 when the wearer of the harness is standing, and thereby these stretches of the hanger strap sustain the leg portions of the trousers A, straight, and in standing position the strain imparted to the hanger strap for holding the hose.
It will be obvious that the harness is readily adjustable, to be used by persons of different sizes and of varying lengths of.
le s.
What is claimed is:
A garment supporter comprising a hanger strap for straddling the crotch of the trousers, means for detachably connecting its stretches to the hose, garters for embracing the limbs, and an uprightelastic loop strap lying along each stretch with its body passing loosely through a garter, and means for connecting its ends to the stretch in adjusted positions.
In testimony whereof, I affix my signature, in the presence oftwo witnesses.
