Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 18, 1920.
Application led .Tune 21, 1917. Serial No. 176,076.
To all whom it may concern.'
Be it known that I, FREDERICK LoBL, a subject of the Emperor of Austria, and a resident of Middleboro, in the county of Plymouth and Commonwealth of Massachusetts, have invented an Improvement in Inhalers, of which the' following description, in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification, like characters on the drawings representing like parts..
This invention relates to inhalers, and aims to provide a novel combined inhaler and medicament holder.
Referring'to the drawings of one embodiment of my invention illustrated and describedv herein p Figure 1 is a perspective top and side View;
Fig. 2 is a bottom thereof;
Fig. 3 is a vertical, longitudinal section;
Fig. 4 is a vertical cross-section; and
Fig. 5 is a perspective to and side view similar to Fig. 1, but with t e top and bottom sections of the inhaler separated.
My inhaler comprises a two-part container and shown herein as comprising a body or holder 1, divided substantially vertically and crosswise thereof to provide a plurality of, and herein two, nozzles 2--2 each conveniently fashioned to' engage a nostril and the dividing nasal partition member of the nose and also provided with a ort or aperture 3.
he holder is provided with a cover 4, of suitable size to fit tightly on the body and may be offset at 5 to provide a shoulder 6 to properly position the cover on the holder.
Both the holder and cover are preferably constructed of some conveniently light and resilient material as brass, so that they may engage each other sufficiently closely to retain the cover on the holder. The cover is preferably removed when the inhaler is to be used but this is not necessary inasmuch as I have provided -the holder at either side with air passages 6", formed by depressing a channel in the holder walls, the passages leading from the end of the recess between the nozzles of the holder to the lower end thereof beneath the cover 4. By this means air is admitted to the holdelgqand` after passing through the same in contact with the medicament therein may be inhaled therefrom by means of the apertures 3.
The medicament I prefer to provide in the form of a tablet or block 7, rather than the `form of a pencil, and for holding this tablet any convenient means may be provided, such as the inwardly extended or struck-up portions or bosses 8 adjacent the lower edge of the holder.
The tablet is of such a size that it may be forced between the bosses 8, which, being more or less resilient, yield suiiciently to engage the tablet firmly and hold it in place.
With this form of holder and tablet securing means, it is unnecessary to provide any admission ports or apertures for air, inasmuch as the space between the tablet and the adjacent walls of the body is, in effect, an admission port or aperture allowing the air to enter between the two and become thoroughly impregnated with the medicinal quantities of the tablet as it passes on its way through the apertures 3 .in the nozzles. v
However, in order that the full benefit of the medicament may be obtained if desired, I provide the tablet 7 with one or more, and herein two, air passages 9 therethrough, so that air may pass also entirely through the tablet and be fully charged therewith.
When it is desired, the medicament tablet may be used as a tablet, in the same manner as a pencil is used, by removing the cover 4. In this ca se the cover may be placed upon the opposite end of the body 1, over the nozzles 2-2 and ports 3, and when thus applied 'obviously will provide a convenient handle by means of which the holder 1 and medicament tablet '7 may be conveniently grasped.
It is obvious that the `foregoing embodiment of my invention may be modified in many detailed respects, all within the spirit of the invention and the scope of the appended claim.
Claim:
A two-piece medicament holder compris ing a holder member with an open end and a vperforated closed end, the latter having a deep recess formed therein with first substantially parallel end walls, next converging walls and again substantially parallel end walls to closely fit the dividing nasal partition member of the nose, a depression in the side Walls of the holder from the end of the recess to the lower end of the holder member forming air passages on either side of the holder leading to the interior thereof, and a anged cover adapted to be used on either end of the holder, in the one case to permit use of the medicament by direct application, and in the other case to cover the medicament and adapt the holder for use as 10 an inhaler. I
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification.
FREDERICK LOBL.
